The increasing usage of the Internet of Things (IoT) across various domains has led to a significant surge in data generation and processing. This exponential growth has introduced numerous data security, privacy, integrity, and availability challenges. Blockchain has emerged as a promising technology to address these challenges. Nevertheless, the resource-constrained nature of IoT devices does not align well with the excessive resource requirements of traditional blockchain systems. While state-of-the-art research has mainly concentrated on making the blockchain lightweight in terms of computational overhead, the issue of managing the append-only, immutable, and ever-growing ledger remains largely unaddressed. In this paper, we propose a novel approach, termed FabMAN, to effectively manage the continuously expanding ledger in the context of Hyperledger Fabric, a permissioned blockchain platform widely adopted for blockchain-based IoT applications. We introduce an adaptive algorithm to dynamically adjust its “Batch size” and “Batch timeout” to optimize its ledger growth. The adaptive algorithm ensures that the ledger growth is nearly optimal, considering the incoming transaction proposal rate. To validate the effectiveness and performance of the proposed method, we conduct comprehensive performance analyses through simulation and prototype implementation and compare the results with the same system model without the ledger management system. Our approach to managing the ever-growing ledger in Hyperledger Fabric-based IoT applications shows significant improvement.

FabMAN: A Framework for Ledger Storage and Size Management for Hyperledger Fabric-Based IoT Applications

Today there is a trend to deploy both commercial and social applications and services on decentralized platforms. This corresponds to the demands of modern society for openness and transparency of information, freedom of access, and equal rights of participants. However, the more sophisticated architecture of decentralized platforms poses new challenges to the developers of such systems. This paper discusses the goals, tasks, and problems that arise during the transition from traditional (centralized) technologies to decentralized ones, and some potential ways to solve them.

Decentralized platforms: Goals, challenges, and solutions

Blockchain technology provides a “tamper-proof distributed ledger” for its users. Typically, to ensure the integrity and immutability of the transaction data, each node in a blockchain network retains a full copy of the ledger; however, this characteristic imposes an increasing storage burden upon each node with the accumulation of data. In this paper, an off-chain solution is introduced to relieve the storage burden of blockchain nodes while ensuring the integrity of the off-chain data. In our solution, an off-chain remote DB server stores the fully replicated data while the nodes only store the commitments of the data to verify whether the off-chain data are tampered with. To minimize the influence on performance, the nodes will store data locally at first and transfer it to the remote DB server when otherwise idle. Our solution also supports accessing all historical data for newly joined nodes through a snapshot mechanism. The solution is implemented based on the Hyperledger Fabric (HLF). Experiments show that our solution reduces the block data for blockchain nodes by 93.3% compared to the original HLF and that our advanced solution enhances the TPS by 9.6% compared to our primary solution.

SASLedger: A Secured, Accelerated Scalable Storage Solution for Distributed Ledger Systems

The concept of a decentralized web has been realized with the idea of Web 3.0 through interconnecting over multiple blockchain-based networks. However, blockchain incurs significant time and space overhead. This problem can be solved using snapshots that store the blockchain’s states compactly. But, the existing snapshot mechanism used in Hyperledger Fabric is limited to siloed operations on a single blockchain only. In this paper, we contribute towards overcoming this drawback by developing a novel mechanism for peer selection, snapshot archival, and cross-blockchain sharing of the snapshot. We extend the snapshot collection mechanism in Hyperledger Fabric to implement the above idea and test it over two blockchain networks emulating a decentralized web architecture.

Cross-chain Transfer of Snapshot Archives for Low-overhead Peer Management in Web 3.0

Bitcoin’s slow finality is an important factor preventing it from being widely used in real life. And other public single-chain blockchains have the same problem. In this paper, we propose a practical new protocol called Plume to achieve consensus with fast finality by utilizing a (slow) traditional blockchain. Plume combines the DAG structure and traditional blockchain to increase throughput and speed up confirmation. DAG structure is proposed to increase throughput, but how to construct a secure consensus protocol based on DAG is pretty hard. In Plume, we use the traditional blockchain to generate a randomness which is used to generate fast blocks in DAG. And the order of fast blocks in DAG is dependent on a global clock and a hash function. Same as bitcoin, Plume is a probabilistic protocol. However, due to DAG structure, the creation rate of blocks in Plume can be higher without reducing security. Thus the confirmation time of blocks can be accelerated. This paper also analyzes the probability of confirmation in different conditions and also proves that Plume is secure no matter the randomness from traditional single chain is unbiased or not. At last, this paper simulates performance with 1000 nodes using NS-3. The throughput can be improved to 400 Tps in the case that block size is 100K bytes and time interval of fast block is 1 second. Also the confirmation time can be reduced to within 2 minutes in the case that block size is 10K bytes and time interval is 1 second.

Plume: Fast Finality Blockchain without Single Failure Point

Blockchain technology is widely used in finance, supply chains, energy exchange, etc. To keep data immutable, all peers in blockchain must store the whole copy of the ledger data. With the growth of transaction volume, the storage burden of each peer increases. To solve the storage scalability issues, we propose a scheme called xFabLedger, which strips ledger storage from peers when using Hyperledger Fabric. The ledger data are separated from the peer and stored on a remote database, so a lightweight peer is conducted. The Vector Commitment (VC) is adopted to keep the integrity of remote data for peers. On the remote database, only one copy of ledger data should be retained. We integrate our solution into Hyperledger Fabric V2.2 and confirm its feasibility.
