A multi-functional endoscopic probe apparatus to selectively apply either a low or high frequency voltage to cut and cauterize. The apparatus has an elongated multi-lumen tube that is attached to a pistol grip having a multiplicity of functions contained thereon. The multi-lumen tube has a first lumen for the passage of either a high or a low pressure irrigation stream therethrough, a second lumen for suction to remove excess fluid and debris, and a third lumen for the passage of a slidably extendable and retractable electro-surgical cutting tip. The pistol grip handle has a wheel which enables the surgeon to rotate the multi-lumen tube containing the surgical cutting tip relative to the pistol grip. A plurality of push-button valves enable the selective application a negative pressure for withdrawing excess fluids and removing incident tissue debris from the surgical site and to operatively apply a flood irrigation stream or a precise irrigation stream to the surgical site to wash and cleanse the tissue. A multi-position electric switch directs either a low or a high frequency voltage to an electro-surgical cutting tip in order to cut and/or cauterized the tissue in contact therewith.

An irrigator/aspirator surgical probe for laparoscopic surgery includes a rotatable handle (22) and a probe (24) having an electrosurgical electrode (78). The handle (22) has two valves (32, 34), one for controlling the flow of irrigation fluid and one for controlling the flow of aspiration fluid. One of the valves can be locked at any selected setting with a locking lever (178). Fine adjustment of the valve is achieved in the locked position. The probe assembly can be rotated relative to the handle assembly as needed to reduce operator fatigue. The probe can be rotated to position the electrode.

Minimally invasive irrigator/aspirator surgical probe and method of using same

An apparatus and method for cleaning the objective lens of a laparoscope, endoscope, or coeloscope during surgery and also removing the solution and debris during and after the cleaning. The result is obtained by using a rigid hollow split sheath for the scope. The split sheath has two separate channels. One channel is for irrigation and the cleaning fluid flows through this channel to be directed onto the lens. The other channel is for suction to remove the solution and debris during and after the cleaning. Control buttons located at the operator's end activate the irrigation and suction functions. The control buttons for irrigation and suction are fabricated into an existing valve type device which can regulate either of these functions. In addition, two ports, one for irrigation and one for suction emerge from the operator's end to connect to the appropriate tubing for irrigation and suction. A rubber ring device screws down at the operator's end allowing the surgeon to secure the sheath to the scope and prevent any leakage of the standard carbon dioxide gas used to distend the abdomen for operative laparoscopy in the patient.

An endoscope and valve system specially adapted for use with a disposable sheath (18) having a plurality of channels (22) and respective resilient tubes (46a,46b,46c) extending therefrom. In one embodiment, the resilient tubes extend along grooves (24) formed in the side of an endoscope control handle (16) and are captured behind a pivotably mounted access door (50). The valve system (74,112,116) pinches the tubes against the door (50). The tubes are selectively released by pressing respective valve-actuating buttons (62,92) on the control handle. In another embodiment, the tubes (46a,46b,46c) are placed in external pinch valves (244,246,248) which are selectively actuated by actuating switches (276,310,316) mounted on the control handle (252).

The distal end of the tubular member and the distal end of the remote viewing device are movable along the blade to introduce the tubular member distal end at the site in the body. A method of introducing a tubular member at a site in the body includes the steps of inserting a blade of an instrument in the body, retracting anatomical tissue with the blade, moving a distal end of a tubular member of the instrument distally along the blade to introduce the distal end of the tubular member at the site in the body and visualizing introduction of the tubular member at the site in the body with a remote viewing device from a location remote from the site in the body.

An endoscope comprises an air-liquid selector valve (8) and a suction control valve (9) attached to a control section (2) of the endoscope, a common tube (26) extending through an insertion section, having one end connected with the suction control valve and the other end opened at the distal end portion of the insertion section (3) of the endoscope, a connecting tube (18) for connecting the suction control valve (9) and the air-liquid selector valve (8). The air-liquid selector valve has a feed-air port, a feed-liquid port, and a piston-cylinder for selectively connecting the ports with the connecting tube, and the suction control valve (9) has a suction port and a piston-cylinder for selectively connecting the suction port and the connecting tube with the common tube.
