A system and method for providing protection of content stored on a bulk storage media is disclosed. The technique for providing protection from unauthorized utilization of the content so stored is provided publicly in order to allow for those utilizing a conforming media device to master or generate content protected according to the present invention. Various ways in which to protect content are disclosed including verification of the authenticity of a particular media, utilization of an accepted list of media play-back devices and their corresponding published public keys in order to securely pass media content keys thereto, and utilization of an external contact to provide media content keys and/or updates of accepted media play-back devices.

Media content protection utilizing public key cryptography

Data management system

In accordance with a first aspect of the present invention, a security sensitive program (100) that operates with a secret (101) is made tamper resistant by distributing the secret in space as well as in time. In accordance with a second aspect of the present invention, a security sensitive program is made tamper resistant by obfuscating the program. In accordance with a third aspect of the present invention, a security sensitive application is made tamper resistant by isolating its security sensitive functions, and making the isolated security sensitive functions tamper resistant by distributing the secrets of the security sensitive functions in time as well as in space, and/or obfuscating the security sensitive functions. In one embodiment where obfuscation is employed, the pseudo-randomly selected pattern(s) of mutations is (are) unique for each installation. In accordance with a fourth aspect of the present invention, a security sensitive system with security sensitive applications is made further tamper resistant by deploying an interlocking trust mechanism. In accordance with a fifth aspect of the present invention, a content industry association, in conjunction with content manufacturers, content reader manufacturers, and content player manufacturers of the industry jointly implement a coordinated encryption/decryption scheme, with the player apparatus manufactured by the content player manufacturers employing playing software that include tamper resistant decryption functions.

It involves operating a computer system and network (9) for electronic publication of documents, including the steps of: a) receiving requests for documents from a plurality of users (117) having computers with display devices (121) or printers (123), including with the requests unique user identification for each of the plurality of users; b) authenticating the requests from the plurality of users with a copyright server (7); c) using the copyright server to direct a document server (3) to act upon proper authentication of each request; d) in response to direction from the copyright server, using a document server (7) to create uniquely encoded, compressed and encrypted documents for each authenticated request, the documents having unique encoding corresponding to each of the plurality of users, and forwarding the documents to each authenticated request user through the network (9) to corresponding agents of each authenticated request user, each of the agents being selected from display agents (111) and printer agents (113); and, e) decrypting and uncompressing the documents at each of the agents and making the documents available for use only in response to receiving correct secret keys provided by the authenticated request user to the agents. These agents are either pre-installed as software into each of the plurality of users' computers, pre-installed as hardware or firmware into user hardware selected from display devices and printers, or are software programs transmitted at the time of use.

Method of protecting electronically published materials using cryptographic protocols

In an information processing system having an upper rank apparatus and an external storage device which performs transmission and reception of data between the storage device and the upper rank apparatus, at least one of encryption and decryption of the data by use of an algorithm controlled by a desired data key is performed in the external storage device, while generation, encryption and decryption of the data key are performed on the upper rank apparatus side. By this configuration, the burden of the upper rank apparatus is largely reduced and the secrecy of data stored in the external storage device can be surely kept without spoiling the throughput of the whole system.

One or more combinations of an operating data processing machine and a backup data processing machine are connected together to enable backup switching wherein the backup machine takes over the data processing from the operating machine when a failure occurs in the operating machine. In particular, each of the operating and backup machines is connected to one or several system resources, such as data storage or data output devices. The operating processor exclusively occupies the system resources, and when a failure occurs the operating processor is disconnected therefrom. A disconnection completion notice is sent to the backup processor, which then begins to exclusively occupy the system resources for performing ongoing data processing that would have been performed by the operating processor had the failure not occurred. When a failure occurs with the operating processor, the data being processed and the data concerning the failure are dumped to an auxiliary memory to facilitate analysis of the failure. Once the failed operating processor is returned to service, it functions as a backup processor that is switched to take over the data processing when a failure occurs in the new operating processor.

In a multi-processor system interconnecting processor units, memory units, and input/output units connected to input/output devices via a crossbar switch having a plurality of ports, the transmitter of each processor unit has a circuit for determining a destination of an access request in the following manner. For an access request to a main memory, the access request is transferred to all processor units and one memory unit storing the data to be accessed. For an access request to a memory mapped register of the input/output device, the access request is broadcast to all input/output units. For an access request to a memory mapped register belonging to any one of the processor units, memory units, and input/output units, the access request is broadcast to all units via the crossbar switch.

A semiconductor integrated circuit system having a function of automatically adjusting an output resistance value with reference to a temperature of an LSI which is operating. When a count value obtained from a counter by counting the output of a timer becomes equal to a predetermined value, a temperature sensor measures temperatures of LSIs. If a temperature fluctuation measured from a previous measured value is greater than a predetermined width, then a control apparatus issues an output resistance value adjustment request signal to output resistance adjustment units of the LSIs. When receiving the output resistance value adjustment request signal, the output resistance value adjustment units stop the signal transmission between the LSIs, adjust output resistance values of output circuits in such a manner that the output resistance values are matched with a characteristic impedance of a transmission line, and maintains the adjusted output resistance values until the output resistance value adjustment units receive next output resistance value adjustment request signal.
