A variable displacement vane-type fluid pump is provided which permits improved regulation of the pump discharge such that the pump can meet the various requirements of lubrication for internal combustion engines at all speeds with minimized use of power. Of course, the vane pump may also be utilized in a wide range of power transmission and other fluid distribution applications. The vane pump of the invention may also use both hydrostatic and mechanical actuators to control the position of its containment ring or eccentric ring and hence, regulate the output of the pump. According to yet another aspect of the present invention, to prevent inlet flow restriction or cavitation, a valve may be provided to permit some of the pump outlet or discharge flow to bleed into the pump inlet to provide needed velocity energy to the fluid flow into the pump inlet. The present invention provides a hydraulic actuator (10) for operating an engine valve (400), which includes a control element (300) for controlling the seating velocity of the valve. The design allows for free, unrestricted movement of the actuator piston during opening of the engine valve, and an unrestricted return of the piston and valve until the valve is within a predetermined distance of the valve seat. Once within this predetermined range, the return velocity of the actuator piston and engine valve are limited by the rate at which a fluid may escape through a restriction. The restriction is calibrated to provide the desired maximum valve seating velocity. The invention also provides for automatic lash adjustment.

This invention relates to a method of operating an internal combustion engine comprising a valve train, said method comprising: (A) operating said engine using a normally liquid or gaseous fuel; (B) lubricating components of said valve train using a solid film lubricant; and (C) lubricating said engine, including said components of said valve train, using a low-phosphorus or phosphorus-free lubricating oil composition, said low-phosphorus or phosphorus-free lubricating oil composition optionally containing an extreme-pressure additive comprised of metal and phosphorus, provided the amount of phosphorus contributed to said low-phosphorus or phosphorus-free lubricating oil composition by said extreme-pressure additive does not exceed about 008% by weight based on the weight of said low-phosphorus or phosphorus-free lubricating oil composition In one embodiment, the inventive method further comprises the following additional steps: (D) removing part of said low-phosphorus or phosphorus-free lubricating oil composition from said engine, said removed part of said low-phosphorus or phosphorus-free lubricating oil composition (i) being combined with said fuel and consumed with said fuel as said engine is operated or (ii) being combined with the exhaust gas from said engine and removed from said engine with said exhaust gas; and (E) adding an additional amount of said low-phosphorus or phosphorus-free lubricating oil composition to said engine to replace said removed part of said low-phosphorus or phosphorus-free lubricating oil composition

In an internal combustion engine comprising a valve operating device which is disposed in a cylinder head coupled to an upper surface of a cylinder block and which includes a valve operating cam shaft connected to a crank shaft rotatably carried in a lower engine body portion including the cylinder block, and valve operation characteristic changing means for changing, in accordance with a variation in hydraulic pressure in a hydraulic pressure chamber, the operation characteristics of an engine valve which is supported in the cylinder head for opening and closing, a lower oil supply system and an upper oil supply system are disposed independently of each other. The lower oil supply system is comprised of a first oil pump connected to individual oil consumption parts disposed in a lower engine body portion for supplying a first oil, and the upper oil supply system is comprised of a second oil pump connected to individual oil consumption parts included in the valve operating device as well as to the hydraulic pressure chamber for supplying a second oil. This ensures that the second oil pump can be disposed in proximity to the hydraulic pressure chamber, so that an oil having a characteristic suitable for the operation of the valve operation characteristic changing means can be supplied quickly, and the cycle of replacement of the oil in the upper oil supply system can be prolonged.
