The urgent need for efficient energy storage devices has stimulated a great deal of research on electrochemical double layer capacitors (EDLCs). This review aims at summarizing the recent progress in nanoporous carbons, as the most commonly used EDLC electrode materials in the field of capacitive energy storage, from the viewpoint of materials science and characterization techniques. We discuss the key advances in the fundamental understanding of the charge storage mechanism in nanoporous carbon-based electrodes, including the double layer formation in confined nanopores. Special attention will be also paid to the important development of advanced in situ analytical techniques as well as theoretical studies to better understand the carbon pore structure, electrolyte ion environment and ion fluxes in these confined pores. We also highlight the recent progress in advanced electrolytes for EDLCs. The better understanding of the charge storage mechanism of nanoporous carbon-based electrodes and the rational design of electrolytes should shed light on developing the next-generation of EDLCs.

Organic batteries using redox-active polymers and small organic compounds have become promising candidates for next-generation energy storage devices due to the abundance, environmental benignity, and diverse nature of organic resources. To date, tremendous research efforts have been devoted to developing advanced organic electrode materials and understanding the material structure-performance correlation in organic batteries. In contrast, less attention was paid to the correlation between electrolyte structure and battery performance, despite the critical roles of electrolytes for the dissolution of organic electrode materials, the formation of the electrode-electrolyte interphase, and the solvation/desolvation of charge carriers. In this review, we discuss the prospects and challenges of organic batteries with an emphasis on electrolytes. The differences between organic and inorganic batteries in terms of electrolyte property requirements and charge storage mechanisms are elucidated. To provide a comprehensive and thorough overview of the electrolyte development in organic batteries, the electrolytes are divided into four categories including organic liquid electrolytes, aqueous electrolytes, inorganic solid electrolytes, and polymer-based electrolytes, to introduce different components, concentrations, additives, and applications in various organic batteries with different charge carriers, interphases, and separators. The perspectives and outlook for the future development of advanced electrolytes are also discussed to provide a guidance for the electrolyte design and optimization in organic batteries. We believe that this review will stimulate an in-depth study of electrolytes and accelerate the commercialization of organic batteries.

Electrolytes in Organic Batteries.

A series of electrolytes based on ionic liquid (IL) N,N-diethyl-N-methyl-N-(2-methoxyethyl)ammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) amide (DEMETFSI) and individual or binary co-solvent(s) consisting of 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (TTE) and/or 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) were investigated. The alterative solvent composition results in very different electrolyte properties (conductivity/viscosity, polysulfide solubility and film formation ability) and Li-S cell performances (specific capacity, cycle stability and rate capability). The hybrid system of DEMETFSI/TTE/DOL provides better overall performances compared to the IL with non- or single co-solvent, which is mainly profited from the synergistic function of TTE and DOL, together favorable for the improvement of ionic conduction of the electrolyte and Li surface chemistry. It is further emphasized that the construction of a rational counterbalance between polysulfide dissolution and shuttle suppression is more significant for the advanced Li-S batteries.

A Rational Balance Design of Hybrid Electrolyte Based on Ionic Liquid and Fluorinated Ether in Lithium Sulfur Batteries

Ionic liquid EMIBF4 (EMI) was combined with propylene carbonate (PC) and/or 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) for electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs). The effects of these support solvents on physicochemical properties of the electrolyte and capacitance performances of the capacitor were investigated. Compared to pure EMI, the existence of support solvent of PC or PC-DME provides better power characteristic mainly profited from improved ion conductivity, but sacrifices the stable potential window to some extent. The capacitor employing activated carbon and the electrolyte EMI-PC-DME yields an active mass normalized energy density of 38.5 Wh kg−1 at ~ 900 W kg−1 for the cut-off voltage of 3 V. It is a significant performance improvement compared to EMI and EMI-PC system at identical operation condition. This research guides an attractive direction to construct advanced 3 V based EDLC with excellent overall properties.
