Recent research and development in the area of design methodologies related to safety and reliability of ship structures is reviewed, focusing on some relevant probabilistic approaches used for the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) of ship hulls against collapse. Important insights and findings previously obtained in the literature are summarized, and recommendations are made with respect to both technologically improved design procedures and those needed for future development.

Ship structural safety and reliability

The objective of this work is to analyze the initial and post-collapse plate deflections based on measurement records of the experiments of three corroded box girders subjected to pure vertical bending loading inducing a compressive stress on deck. The effect of initial imperfections and corrosion degradation on the final post-collapse deformation shape has been investigated and a relationship between different loading responses, shape of initial imperfections and plate slenderness has been derived. Analyzing initial imperfections, plate slenderness and final post-collapse deformations, a slenderness criterion has been established to predict the post-collapse deformation shape.

Analysis of plate deflections during ultimate strength experiments of corroded box girders

A method for the determin11tion of the behavior and ultimate strength of lon~i tudinally stiffened single-cell ship hull girders under the combined loading of moment, shear and torque is described. The main features are: (1) Individual components are analysed under the requirement of deformational compatibility among them; (2) The compression flange is assumed to be made up of parallel beam-columns with the axial force for each defined as a function of the axial deformation (buckling, plastification and large deformation are taken into account); (~) A multiple tension-field action is considered for the webs in the post-buckling stage; (4) Warping of the cross section is incorporated by assuming linear variation of the average axial deformations across the width of each component (flange or web) of the cross section, but without requiring that the cross section remain plane. A previously developed computer program was modified to carry out the analysis, with some cia ta obtained in experiments used as input. This method of 11nalysis shows a better correlation with the experimental results than the method used previously, although the prediction is still somewhat optimistic with respect to the teat results. The following topics are recommended for future investigation: (1) Inclusion of the effect of shear lag on the behavior of flanges ; (2) Inclusion of the effect of shearing stress on the behavior of the plate components in the compression flange; (3) Formulation of an energy criterion for determining the optimum degree of warpin~.

Strength of ship hull girders under moment, shear and torque.

Substoichiometric molybdenum oxide ceramics have aroused widespread interest owing to their promising optical and electrical performance. In this work, the thermal stability and decomposition mechanism of Mo9O26 and Mo4O11 at 700–1000 °C and 700–1100 °C were investigated, respectively. Based on this information, MoOx (2 < x < 3) bulk ceramics were prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The results show that Mo9O26 is stable up to 790 °C in an argon atmosphere. As the temperature rises, it decomposes into Mo4O11. Mo4O11 can exist stably at 830 °C, beyond which it will convert to MoO2. The MoOx ceramic bulks with four different components (MoO2.9, MoO2.8, MoO2.7 and MoO2.6) were successfully sintered by SPS, and their relative density was greater than 96.4% as measured by the Archimedes principle. The reflectivity of MoOx ceramic bulk is low and only 6.3% when the composition is MoO2.8. The resistivity increases from 10−3 to 10−1 Ωcm with the increase in the O/Mo atomic ratio x. In general, the thermal stability information provides a theoretical basis for the processing of MoOx materials, such as the sintering of the MoOx target. The optical and electrical properties show that MoOx is a low-reflective conductive oxide material with great photoelectric application value.
