Confronted by the difficulties of the von Neumann bottleneck and memory wall, traditional computing systems are gradually inadequate for satisfying the demands of future data‐intensive computing applications. Recently, memristors have emerged as promising candidates for advanced in‐memory and neuromorphic computing, which pave one way for breaking through the dilemma of current computing architecture. Till now, varieties of functional materials have been developed for constructing high‐performance memristors. Herein, the review focuses on the emerging 2D MXene materials‐based memristors. First, the mainstream synthetic strategies and characterization methods of MXenes are introduced. Second, the different types of MXene‐based memristive materials and their widely adopted switching mechanisms are overviewed. Third, the recent progress of MXene‐based memristors for data storage, artificial synapses, neuromorphic computing, and logic circuits is comprehensively summarized. Finally, the challenges, development trends, and perspectives are discussed, aiming to provide guidelines for the preparation of novel MXene‐based memristors and more engaging information technology applications.

Emerging MXene‐Based Memristors for In‐Memory, Neuromorphic Computing, and Logic Operation

MXenes, are an emerging class of 2D materials which have attracted growing interest among the scientific research community due to their unique properties, making them suitable for a wide variety of applications. Different transition metal-based MXenes have been investigated, being derived from the pristine MAX phase by selective etching of the “A” layer. MXene-based composite materials have shown great potential in electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and microwave (MW) absorption applications due to their conductivity, high specific surface area, highly active surface sites, and multi-layered structure. In this critical review article, we discuss the synthesis of 2D layered MXenes. We start by first introducing the MAX phase preparation, and the morphologies of different MXenes. We then examine the various approaches for MXene synthesis. The exfoliation and detachment of layers from bulk MXene into few layers, and the availability of functional groups in MXene materials are then discussed. We finish the review by covering the latest advances in 2D MXene-based composite materials for use in EMI shielding applications, also discussing the current challenges, new opportunities and prospects for MXene materials. 

Cutting edge composite materials based on MXenes: Synthesis and electromagnetic interference shielding applications

Research Progress on Energy Storage Performance Enhancement Strategies for Polyvinylidene Fluoride-based Composites

Lightweight, multifunctional microwave absorption materials with comprehensive performance have promising applications in practical and extreme application environments. In this paper, Ti3C2Tx MXene/short-cut carbon fiber (CF)/polyimide (PMCF) aerogels are prepared by freeze-drying and thermal imidization method, which have excellent mechanical properties, hydrophobicity, flame retardant, heat resistance, and microwave absorption performance. Thanks to the porous structure, the aerogel has a low density of 18.58 mg/cm3 and hydrophobic property. MXene and CF stabilizes the structure of the PMCF aerogels, and the compressive strength and compressive modulus of the aerogel are 683.33 kPa and 557.33 kPa, respectively. The synergistic effect of the structure and components gives the material dielectric loss capability for good microwave absorption. The minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of the aerogel reaches −61.96 dB, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) is 3.97 GHz. Polyimide gives the aerogel heat resistance up to 500 °C and flame retardancy against alcohol burning. The excellent electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption properties and comprehensive performance will make this material prominent in next-generation electronic devices and stealth equipment in real-world environments.

Improved Energy Storage Performance of Polyimide Nanocomposites by Constructing the Meso- and Macroscopic Interfaces

The rational design and applications of MXene‐based materials have yielded remarkable progress in flexible sensors, including wearable devices, soft robots, and smart medical equipment. The emerging MXene and substrate materials can be precisely engineered to improve the mechanical properties and sensing sensitivity of the sensors, opening up a wider range of application possibilities for MXene‐based sensors. Therefore, a systematic and comprehensive review summarizing the progress of MXene‐based sensor research based on these backgrounds is necessary. First, we discuss the basic structure of MXene materials and introduce the flexible substrate materials for MXene‐based flexible sensors in detail. Then, we also discuss the different preparation methods of MXene‐based sensors, describe the classifications, and highlight the applications of MXene‐based flexible sensors in various scenarios. Finally, we identify the challenges that need to be overcome to accelerate the development of MXene‐based materials in flexible sensing. This review provides a comprehensive and systematic insight into MXene‐based flexible sensors and it is expected that this review will contribute to the development of higher performance MXene‐based flexible sensors.

MXene‐Based Flexible Sensors: Materials, Preparation, and Applications

The memristor is a basic unit of advanced information storage devices. As a passive device, it needs additional bias voltage to drive, which brings great challenges to the development of highly integrated of memristors. Therefore, it is urgent to develop highly reliable functional materials with both resistance memory and electric energy storage properties. Herein, with the introduction of Ti 3 C 2 T X nanosheets (TCTNs) into a polyimide matrix, we take the lead in realizing synchronous resistance memory characteristics and energy storage performance in one material system. With the addition of only 0.5 wt% TCTNs, the charge-discharge energy storage density of the polyimide (PI)-based composite increased by approximately 30%, and showed the memristor characteristics. More encouragingly, the composites also exhibited a massive increase in mechanical flexibility and electrical reliability. The slightly ordered arrangement of TCTNs in the PI matrix was confirmed by synchrotron radiation SAXS and HR-TEM. Finite element analysis was used to simulate the redistribution of the stress field and electric field of these composites in the presence of different distribution states of TCTNs. The chemical valence state and the atomic structure of TCTNs in the PI matrix were investigated by synchrotron radiation XAFS technology. DFT calculation models were established to calculate the evolution of the energy band structure of TCTNs during the synthesis process of the composites, determining the synergistic enhancement mechanism of energy storage and information storage properties in TCTNs/PI composites. This study is expected to provide a material candidate of highly integrated and reliable self-powered information storage devices. 2D MXene nanosheets were introduced into PI matrix by in-situ polymerization, and the obtained composites film has a large gain in voltage resistance and mechanical properties. More significantly, the composite exhibits synchronous charge storage characteristics and information storage characteristics. • We take the lead in exploring the simultaneous realization of energy storage and information storage in a single material system. • The large gain of mechanical properties of Ti 3 C 2 T X /PI composite is achieved at ultra-low content of Ti 3 C 2 T X nanosheets. • The gain mechanisms of the distribution and surface chemical states of Ti 3 C 2 T X on the properties of composites were discussed.
