Finite Volume Methods for Hyperbolic Problems

In these lecture notes we describe the construction, analysis, and application of ENO (Essentially Non-Oscillatory) and WENO (Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory) schemes for hyperbolic conservation laws and related Hamilton-Jacobi equations. ENO and WENO schemes are high order accurate finite difference schemes designed for problems with piecewise smooth solutions containing discontinuities. The key idea lies at the approximation level, where a nonlinear adaptive procedure is used to automatically choose the locally smoothest stencil, hence avoiding crossing discontinuities in the interpolation procedure as much as possible. ENO and WENO schemes have been quite successful in applications, especially for problems containing both shocks and complicated smooth solution structures, such as compressible turbulence simulations and aeroacoustics.

Nimmt man die Mittelpunkte der Sechsecke als Punkte für ein Voronoidiagramm, dann haben alle genau 6 Nachbarn, und die Voronoi Polygone sind gerade die Sechsecke. Gäbe es eine Punkteverteilung, bei der jeder Punkt mehr als sechs Nachbarn hätte, dann könnte man die Punkte so hinschieben, dass die Voronoi Polygone regelmässige n-Ecke mit n > 6 wären. Eine solche Überdeckung der Ebene gibt es aber nicht (wie man sich leicht aus einer Betrachtung der Winkel überlegen kann).

▪ Abstract We provide an overview of level set methods, introduced by Osher and Sethian, for computing the solution to fluid-interface problems. These are computational techniques that rely on an implicit formulation of the interface, represented through a time-dependent initial-value partial-differential equation. We discuss the essential ideas behind the techniques, the coupling of these techniques to finite-difference methods for incompressible and compressible flow, and a collection of applications including two-phase flow, ship hydrodynamics, and ink-jet-printhead design.

Weighted Essentially Non-oscillatory Schemes on Triangular Meshes

We describe a three-dimensional front tracking algorithm, discuss its numerical implementation, and present studies to validate the correctness of this approach. Based on the results of the two-dimensional computations, we expect three-dimensional front tracking to significantly improve computational efficiencies for problems dominated by discontinuities. In some cases, for which the interface computations display considerable numerical sensitivity, we expect a greatly enhanced capability.

We study the nonlinear stability of shock waves for viscous conservation laws. Our approach is based on a new construction of a fundamental solution for a linearized system around a shock profile. We obtain, for the first time, the pointwise estimates of nonlinear wave interactions across a shock wave. Our results apply to all ranges of weak shock waves and small perturbations. In particular, our results reduce to the time-asymptotic behavior of constant state perturbation, uniformly as the strength of the shock wave tends to zero.

Compressible Navier–Stokes Equations with Zero Heat Conductivity

We study gas flows with any finite number of thermal nonequilibrium modes. The equations describing such flows are a hyperbolic system with several relaxation equations. An important feature is entropy increase dictated by physics for any irreversible process. Under physical assumptions we obtain properties of thermodynamic variables relevant to stability. By the energy method we prove global existence and uniqueness for the Cauchy problem when the initial data are small perturbations of constant equilibrium states. We give a precise formulation of the fundamental solution for the linearized system, and use it to obtain large time behavior of solutions to the nonlinear system. In particular, we show that the entropy increases but stays bounded. The resulting asymptotic picture of nonequilibrium flows is in a pointwise sense both in space and in time.
