The impact of growth, energy and financial development on environmental pollution in China: New evidence from a spatial econometric analysis

The harm of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) to public health is the focus of attention around the world. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2015 (GBD 2015 Risk Factors Collaborators, 2016) ranked PM2.5 as the fifth leading risk factor for death, which caused 4.2 million deaths and 103.1 million disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) loss, representing 7.6% of total global deaths and 4.2% of global DALYs. Epidemiological studies have confirmed that exposure to PM2.5 increases the incidence and mortality of respiratory infections. The host defense dysfunction caused by PM2.5 exposure may be the key to the susceptibility of respiratory system infection. Thus, this review aims to assess the impact of PM2.5 on the host defense of respiratory system. Firstly, we elaborated the epidemiological evidence that exposure to PM2.5 increases the risk of respiratory infections. Secondly, we summarized the experimental evidence that PM2.5 exposure increases the susceptibility of different pathogens (including bacteria and viruses) in respiratory system. Furthermore, here we discussed the underlying host defense mechanisms by which PM2.5 exposure increases the risk of respiratory infections as well as future perspectives.

Research on the direct and indirect effects of environmental regulation on environmental pollution: Empirical evidence from 253 prefecture-level cities in China

To investigate the effects of regulation on environmental pollution under Chinese-style fiscal decentralization, this research analyzes annual data over the period 2003 to 2017 covering 30 provinces in China with the spatial economic model. The empirical results show significant spatial agglomeration effects on the emissions of wastewater, sulfur dioxide, and solid waste. Environmental regulation helps reduce discharge of wastewater and solid waste, but does not help reduce the emission of sulfur dioxide; because there is significantly positive externality in treating pollutants with high fluidity, cost is larger than revenue for local governments. The relationship between fiscal decentralization and pollutants shapes an inverted U-shaped curve. We finally offer some implications in accordance with our empirical finding, such as the intensity of environmental regulation should be suitable for economic development, different measures should be taken based on the fluidity of pollutants, and a new evaluation system should be established.

Fiscal decentralization, environmental regulation, and pollution: a spatial investigation

Air pollution caused by atmospheric particulate and gaseous pollutants has drawn broad public concern globally. In this paper, the spatial-temporal distributions of major air pollutants in Shenzhen from March 2013 to February 2014 are discussed. In this study, ground-site monitoring data from 19 monitoring sites was used and spatial interpolation and spatial autocorrelation methods were applied to analyze both spatial and temporal characteristics of air pollutants in Shenzhen City. During the study period, the daily average concentrations of Particulate Matter (PM10 and PM2.5) ranged from 16–189 μg/m3 and 10–136 μg/m3, respectively, with 13 and 44 over-limit days, indicating that particulate matter was the primary air pollutant in Shenzhen. The highest PM occupation in the polluted air was observed in winter, indicating that fine particulate pollution was most serious in winter. Meanwhile, seasonal agglomeration patterns for six kinds of air pollutants showed that Guangming, Baoan, Nanshan, and the northern part of Longgang were the most polluted areas and PMs were their primary air pollutants. In addition, wind scale and rainfall played an important role in dissipating air pollutant in Shenzhen. The wind direction impacted the air pollution level in Shenzhen in multiple ways: the highest concentrations for all air pollutants all occurred on days with a northeast wind; the second highest ones appeared on the days with no wind. The concentrations on days with north-related winds are higher on average than those of days with south-related winds.

Pattern of Spatial Distribution and Temporal Variation of Atmospheric Pollutants during 2013 in Shenzhen, China

Based on Chinese county-level statistic data, this paper reveals spatial–temporal distribution and changing of grain production, by studying gravity centres of grain input–output regions in China from 1985 to 2009. According to the grain output, per-capita grain consumption, and population, the surplus grain of 2864 counties from 1985 to 2009 was calculated. And the counties with surplus grain value greater than zero and smaller than zero were respectively defined as grain input regions and grain output regions; they were respectively analysed by using the model of grain gravity centre. We found that there are four periods of spatial–temporal changing of gravity centres in grain input regions, and five periods in all output regions. Nowadays, most of the research on air pollution and its adverse effects on public health in China has focused on megacities and heavily-polluted regions. Fewer studies have focused on cities that are slightly polluted. Shenzhen used to have a favorable air environment, but its air quality has deteriorated gradually as a result of development in recent years. So far, no systematic investigations have been conducted on the adverse effects of air pollution on public health in Shenzhen. This research has applied a time series analysis model to study the possible association between different types of air pollution and respiratory hospital admission in Shenzhen in 2013. Respiratory hospital admission was divided into two categories for comparison analysis among various population groups: acute upper respiratory infection and acute lower respiratory infection. The results showed that short-term exposure to ambient air pollution was significantly associated with acute respiratory infection hospital admission in Shenzhen in 2013. Children under 14 years old were the main susceptible population of acute respiratory infection due to air pollution. PM10, PM2.5 and NO₂ were the primary air pollutants threatening respiratory health in Shenzhen. Though air pollution level is generally relatively low in Shenzhen, it will benefit public health to control the pollution of particulate matter as well as other gaseous pollutants.

The Association between Air Pollution and Population Health Risk for Respiratory Infection: A Case Study of Shenzhen, China

The spatial pattern and geographical diffusion of Chinese traditional food culture are important manifestations of population migration and cultural chain remodeling. Taking the national roast duck stores and Beijing Quanjude and Bianyifang brand chain roast duck stores as the research objects, the spatial distribution characteristics and geographic diffusion patterns of roast duck stores, and the spatial association characteristics of the chain stores are analyzed by using spatial analysis methods and mathematical statistics. The results of the study showed that: (1) The roast duck stores in the mainland show an overall northeast-southwest direction, and the spatial distribution is extremely uneven. The eastern coast of China shows a high-value continuous distribution, from the Bohai Bay Economic Circle and the Yangtze River Delta Economic Circle, gradually radiating westward to the middle and showing the clustering characteristics of “point + surface”. (2) Using the point cluster analysis method, the diffusion pattern of roast duck stores in the three major economic zones of China is explored, and roast duck stores in the western region show the characteristics of contact diffusion combined with hierarchical diffusion. Contact diffusion is the main diffusion mode of roast duck stores in the east. The central region shows the diffusion characteristics of contact diffusion combined with hierarchical diffusion. Overall, the roast duck stores in mainland China show a composite diffusion pattern. (3) Quanjude and Bianyifang stores have spatial agglomeration characteristics, Quanjude chain stores have a slightly stronger central pointing, while Bianyifang roast duck chain stores have slightly wider spatial diffusion. Both brands significantly show spatial orientation close to transportation facilities and high consumption markets. The street population has a slightly weaker influence on the spatial distribution of the two brands. (4) Through the multivariate spatial analysis method, it is found that the spatial correlation of mutual attraction between Quanjude and Bianyifang roast duck chain stores is presented, but there are differences in the formation mechanism and weak asymmetry in the attraction intensity, which is related to the consumer population and corporate positioning of Quanjude and Bianyifang. With the advent of the big data era, it is possible to obtain and use big data analysis methods to reshape the deep information under the surface logic. Attention should be paid to the location choice of traditional restaurant chains in the new era, to explore the possibilities of enterprise development, and to improve the efficiency of urban space.
