Effects of Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 and Dexamethasone on Cytokine-Challenged Cartilage: Relevance to Post Traumatic Osteoarthritis
Yang Li,Yang Wang,S. Chubinskaya,Birgit Schoeberl,Emily Florine,Paul W. Kopesky,Alan J. Grodzinsky +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the combined use of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and dexamethasone (Dex) was studied to block the multiple degradative effects of cytokine challenge to articular cartilage.

Moderate dynamic compression inhibits pro-catabolic response of cartilage to mechanical injury, tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6, but accentuates degradation above a strain threshold
TL;DR: The findings support the concept of appropriate loading for post-injury rehabilitation and inhibit the pro-catabolic response of cartilage to mechanical injury and cytokine challenge, but there is a threshold strain amplitude above which loading becomes detrimental to cartilage.

Intra-articular dexamethasone to inhibit the development of post-traumatic osteoarthritis.
TL;DR: In vitro models show that low doses of dexamethasone sustain the synthesis of cartilage proteoglycans while inhibiting their breakdown after injurious compression in the presence or absence of inflammatory cytokines, and a pilot clinical study is initiated to determine whether a single, intra‐articular injection of Dexameth asone into the wrist shows promise in preventing post‐traumatic osteoarthritis.

TL;DR: The findings suggest that the combination of IGF-1 and Dex has greater beneficial effects than either molecule alone in preventing cytokine-mediated cartilage degradation in adult human and young bovine cartilage.

Aptamer sandwich assays: human α-thrombin detection using liposome enhancement
TL;DR: Fluorescent dye-encapsulating liposomes tagged with aptamers were developed and used as reporting signals in an aptamer-based sandwich assay and the success of this method in a standard microtiter plate format suggests that this approach provides a versatile option for routine analytical applications.
