The rise of greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere is a severe climate change concern. A significant part, such as CO2 emission, comes from internal combustion engine-driven vehicles, incited the automotive sector to focus more on the sustainable electric transportation system. However, electric vehicles face significant charging time, charging methods, and range anxiety challenges. To overcome these challenges, charging technologies for electric vehicle batteries play an essential role. Many types of electric vehicle charging topologies have been discussed in the literature and implemented in many practical applications. This paper presents a state of art criticism of advanced converter topologies and charging methodology for electric vehicle applications. Apart from the conventional topologies, this manuscript has covered the comparative criticism of the recently proposed EV charging technologies regarding charging methods, control strategies, and power levels. Further, this paper discussed the different onboard chargers with their power factor correction topologies, drawbacks, and required corrections. This manuscript provides the research directions for the academic and industrial communities. 

A comprehensive review on advanced charging topologies and methodologies for electric vehicle battery

The unique advantages of modular multilevel converters (MMCs) have led to wide adoption of the converter topology in high voltage dc (HVDC) transmission systems, with great potential for use in medium voltage motor drive and dc grid applications. Inspired by the structure of the MMC, many extended converter topologies have been developed in the literature. These include, in addition to conventional parallel multiphase connection, a variety of series-connected topologies. Extended MMCs integrate the modular nature of cascaded SMs of the MMC but with different topology structure leading to substantially different operating principles. Given the growing number of such topologies, this paper provides a critical review of MMC derived topologies and summarizes individual advantages and disadvantages. The control schemes and application fields of these different topologies are analysed. This review facilitates the classification and understanding of extended MMCs and provides the necessary scaffold for the development of a general framework for new topologies and applications based on the MMC. 

Beyond the MMC: Extended Modular Multilevel Converter Topologies and Applications

Conventional power electronic interfaces for multisource applications always need multiple conversion stages as intermediate dc–dc power conversion stages are inevitably installed for matching the different dc voltage levels and regulating the power distribution among dc sources. Dually, single-stage multiport inverter for multisource applications enables direct connection from the dc source to ac side without an extra conversion stage and has witnessed an upward trend in recent years. The salient advantages of single-stage multiport inverters comprise fewer power losses, fewer passive filters, and higher system efficiency. To capture the advancement in the field, the article reviews various single-stage multiport inverters for multisource applications, offers a comprehensive understanding of the current development of this configuration, and provides an insightful forward look at potential research issues of single-stage multiport inverters. This article presents various state-of-the-art single-stage multiport topologies as well as their applications and comparisons. In addition, systemic topology derivation methods of single-stage multiport inverters are discussed to provide inspiration for exploring new topologies. Moreover, the main challenging issues of this topology, such as modulation, control, and energy management strategies are analyzed and summarized. Finally, some open questions and future trends of single-stage multiport inverters are also discussed to motivate future research and explore new alternatives. 

A Review of Single-Stage Multiport Inverters for Multisource Applications

The circuit topology of a submodule (SM) in an modular multilevel converter (MMC) defines many of the functionalities of the complete power electronics conversion system and the specific applications that a specific MMC configuration can support. Most prominent among all applications for the MMC is its use in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems and multiterminal dc grids. The aim of the paper is to provide a comprehensive review and classification of the many different SM circuit topologies that have been proposed for the MMC up to date. Using an 800-MVA, point-to-point MMC-based HVDC transmission system as a benchmark, the presented analysis identifies the limitations and drawbacks of certain SM configurations that limit their broader adoption as MMC SMs. A hybrid model of an MMC arm and appropriate implementations of voltage-balancing algorithms are used for detailed loss comparison of all SMs and to quantify differences among multiple SMs. The review also provides a comprehensive benchmark among all SM configurations, broad recommendations for the benefits and limitations of different SM topologies which can be further expanded based on the requirements of a specific application, and identifies future opportunities.

Review, Classification and Loss Comparison of Modular Multilevel Converter Submodules for HVDC Applications

The integration of offshore wind farms has revitalized the interest in multi–terminal high voltage direct current (M–HVdc) transmission grids. HVdc breakers’ importance has increased as M–HVdc grids are now a commercial truth. Several HVdc circuit breaker technologies have been developed, published, and appeared as prototypes for HVdc networks. This paper summarizes the HVdc breaker technologies from the last two decades, distributed mainly in literature. A comparison of various state–of–the–art HVdc breakers is presented. Further, areas are identified where further research and development are required. The goal is to provide primary challenges and prospects in the HVdc breaker field.

HVdc Circuit Breakers: Prospects and Challenges

A modular multilevel converter (MMC) is an advanced voltage source converter applicable to a wide range of medium and high-voltage applications. It has competitive advantages such as quality output performance, high modularity, simple scalability, and low voltage and current rating demand for the power switches. Remarkable studies have been carried out regarding its topology, control, and operation. The main purpose of this review is to present the current state of the art of the MMC technology and to offer a better understanding of its operation and control for stationary applications. In this study, the MMC configuration is presented regarding its conventional and advanced submodule (SM) and overall topologies. The mathematical modeling, output voltage, and current control under different grid conditions, submodule balancing control, circulating current control, and modulation methods are discussed to provide the state of the MMC technology. The challenges linked to the MMC are associated with submodule balancing control, circulating current control, control complexity, and transient performance. Advanced nonlinear and predictable control strategies are expected to improve the MMC control and performance in comparison with conventional control methods. Finally, the power losses associated with the advanced wide bandgap (WBG) power devices (such as SiC, GaN) are explored by using different modulation schemes and switching frequencies. The results indicate that although the phase-shifted carrier-based pulse width modulation (PSC-PWM) has higher power losses, it outputs a better quality voltage with lower total harmonic distortion (THD) in comparison with phase-disposition pulse width modulation (PD-PWM) and sampled average modulation pulse width modulation (SAM-PWM). In addition, WBG switches such as silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) devices have lower power losses and higher efficiency, especially at high switching frequency in the MMC applications.
