The cost of adsorbent preparation and usage is an important factor that determines its suitability for use in wastewater treatment in light of other competing technologies. Adsorbent cost can be determined via the cost of raw materials, discounted cash flow, cost indices, cost of adsorbent per gram of the adsorbate removed, Annual Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) and Operating Expenditures (OPEX), and the cost of adsorbent application in an adsorption operation. The need to unify the various concepts of adsorbent cost of different researchers and the evaluation of how the process efficiency affects the process cost prompted the need for this study. This paper aimed to review the cost of using different adsorbents for treating wastewater. It also developed a quantitative metric for comparing adsorbent costs known as the “adsorbent cost performance,” termed as Ĉ (and computed in $/mol). This was elucidated as the dollar cost of producing and using 1 g of an adsorbent for the removal of 1 mole of a chemical species in the aqueous phase, considered at the theoretical point of maximum uptake of the chemical species. There is a wide variation in adsorbent cost performance, but most adsorbents fall between 1 and 200 $/mol. Adsorbents at < 1 $/mol threshold can be considered very cheap for the intended application, while those at > 200 $/mol can be considered very expensive. More investigations into adsorbent cost analysis are encouraged, especially in routine adsorption studies, to help extend the practical relevance of these papers. 

Cost of Adsorbent Preparation and Usage in Wastewater Treatment: A Review

Abstract Access to drinkable water is becoming more and more challenging due to worldwide pollution and the cost of water treatments. Water and wastewater treatment by adsorption on solid materials is usually cheap and effective in removing contaminants, yet classical adsorbents are not sustainable because they are derived from fossil fuels, and they can induce secondary pollution. Therefore, biological sorbents made of modern biomass are increasingly studied as promising alternatives. Indeed, such biosorbents utilize biological waste that would otherwise pollute water systems, and they promote the circular economy. Here we review biosorbents, magnetic sorbents, and other cost-effective sorbents with emphasis on preparation methods, adsorbents types, adsorption mechanisms, and regeneration of spent adsorbents. Biosorbents are prepared from a wide range of materials, including wood, bacteria, algae, herbaceous materials, agricultural waste, and animal waste. Commonly removed contaminants comprise dyes, heavy metals, radionuclides, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products. Preparation methods include coprecipitation, thermal decomposition, microwave irradiation, chemical reduction, micro-emulsion, and arc discharge. Adsorbents can be classified into activated carbon, biochar, lignocellulosic waste, clays, zeolites, peat, and humic soils. We detail adsorption isotherms and kinetics. Regeneration methods comprise thermal and chemical regeneration and supercritical fluid desorption. We also discuss exhausted adsorbent management and disposal. We found that agro-waste biosorbents can remove up to 68–100% of dyes, while wooden, herbaceous, bacterial, and marine-based biosorbents can remove up to 55–99% of heavy metals. Animal waste-based biosorbents can remove 1–99% of heavy metals. The average removal efficiency of modified biosorbents is around 90–95%, but some treatments, such as cross-linked beads, may negatively affect their efficiency.

Towards a smart water city: A comprehensive review of applications, data requirements, and communication technologies for integrated management

Water pollution is one of the major environmental challenges in contemporary times. Biochar from hydrothermal processes (known as hydrochars) has been explored as adsorbents for the removal of pollutants from wastewater. Hydrochars are a special class of biochar that is obtained from hydrothermal processes such as hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) and hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL). Because of its good pore volume, surface area, high efficiency, and regeneration ability, hydrochar is an appealing choice for the remediation of a wide range of contaminants. This review aimed to focus the uniqueness of hydrochar properties and evaluate their performance on the adsorption of different pollutants from wastewater. It was observed that hydrochars can be effectively applied to a wide variety of pollutants including heavy metals, dyes, Pharmaceutically Active Compounds (PhACs), Endocrine Disruption Chemicals (EDCs), nitrates, phosphates and sulphate. The utilisation of hydrochar in water treatment solves constraints such as lack of regeneration, environmental friendliness, commercial feasibility, and disposal, handling or management concerns. • Hydrochars are a special class of biochar obtained from hydrothermal processes. • The adsorption of various pollutants from wastewater by hydrochar is reviewed. • The use of hydrochar will contribute to the reduction of solid wastes and promote the circular economy. 

Recent advances in hydrochar application for the adsorptive removal of wastewater pollutants

In recent years, with the global increase in industrialization, there has been a significant increase in the amount of toxic pollutants such as heavy metals being released into water bodies. Adsorption is considered as one of the most attractive methods due to its high efficiency and ability to remove heavy metals even at low concentration. Agricultural wastes-based biosorbents have attracted great interest due to their capability to effectively remove heavy metals from wastewater. Chemical modifications on biosorbents can significantly improve the biosorption capacities and the longevity of the biosorbents. Most of the adsorption studies followed the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model best fitted most of the adsorption kinetic studies. Moreover, ion exchange, electrostatic attraction and chelation were the governing adsorption mechanisms in most of the studies. The adsorption process was usually spontaneous and endothermic in nature. The regeneration of biosorbents was most effective when acids were used as eluents and this had allowed some biosorbents to be reused efficiently up to 10 times. To elucidate a practical perspective, analysis on column studies, adsorption performance using industrial wastewater, and cost analysis had been conducted. Cost analysis proved that agricultural wastes-based biosorbents are cheaper than traditional adsorbents such as activated carbon. 

Biosorption of heavy metals from aqueous solution by various chemically modified agricultural wastes: A review

Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) contaminations are disturbing environmental issues, which causes serious harm to aqueous systems and human health. Therefore, removing them from aqueous solution is essential to prevent its damage to the environment. Environmental adsorption research as one solution has seen a boom over the past decade. Using modified biochar has proved to be more suitable for the adsorption of cadmium and lead. Most of the studies apply a routine method such as kinetic and isotherm modelling to demonstrate the macroscopic trend of adsorption, often without elaborative evaluation of the effectiveness and characteristics of the models. This review compiles different adsorption kinetics and isotherms models and also presents their origins, modified versions, and their applicability in the liquid adsorption situation. The effect of experimental parameters and adsorption mechanisms are discussed to study the adsorption performances of modified biochar. The adsorption mechanism was majorly by surface precipitation, ion exchange, electrostatic attraction, complexation and physical adsorption. The adsorption was majorly endothermic and spontaneous. Additionally, preparation and regeneration of modified biochar are also presented to provide a direction for sustainable improvement. This paper summarizes with a note on challenges, prospects and future perspectives of adsorption of cadmium and lead pollutions.

Adsorption of cadmium and lead from aqueous solution using modified biochar: A review

Low impact development (LID) practices are able to mitigate the detrimental effects of urbanization and climate change due to their salient design features. LID can restore the hydrology of urban areas to the pre-development functions by using distributed stormwater control and natural hydrological features. LID can help to achieve the goal of sustainable development as it promotes effective urban stormwater management. This review covers a comprehensive list of LID practices, namely bioretention cell, green roof, infiltration trench, permeable pavement, rain barrel or cistern, rooftop disconnection and vegetative swale. For each type of the LID, the recent advances covering the aspects of principles, design, performance, advantages and disadvantages and costs are systematically reviewed. Additionally, although LID has been quite broadly applied and demonstrated success in urban stormwater management in many countries, there are still some main challenges during the implementation such as clogging and water quality. Meanwhile, this review also highlights the great opportunities for further developments for LID practices to realize their wider practical application. Finally, future research directions are provided in order to give critical insights into potential future works to advance this field of research.
