Vibration sensing is critical to monitor and ultimately preserve the health state of engineering systems. These systems with a large structure are typically working in some harsh environments including strong magnetic fields. However, traditional electrical sensors are difficult to accurately measure the vibration under harsh environments. Besides these instinct advantages of normal fiber optic sensors (FOS) sensors such as compact size, passive sensing, resistance to electromagnetic interference, etc., fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have a capability of distributed sensing based on wavelength demodulation and resistance to light intensity fluctuation and unwanted fiber bending losses. Such merits lead them to be a hot topic in FOS field and excellent candidates for vibration sensing. Three types of FBG-based vibration sensors have been classified based on the difference of vibration-strain coupling way to FBG in this survey, which are pasted FBG-based, axial property of FBG-based and transverse property of FBG-based, respectively. FBG-based vibration sensors' principles and designs have been introduced and discussed. Recent advances in the applications of FBG-based vibration sensors have been investigated. The limitations and prospects of the FBG-based vibration sensing technologies have been analyzed and discussed.

Recent Advances and Tendency in Fiber Bragg Grating-Based Vibration Sensor: A Review

A cantilever based optical accelerometer with enhanced performance characteristics has been proposed. The sensitivity of the accelerometer has efficiently been enhanced by about twice as compared to the conventional design by tailoring the effective distance between the sensor axis to the neutral axis of the cantilever. The sensitivity enhancement has been done without affecting the characteristic resonant frequency of the system. A sensitivity of about 450 pm/g is achieved for a specific cantilever-mass arrangement. The architecture requires much simpler design as compared to optical accelerometers based on similar working principle and having sensitivities of this order.

Fiber Bragg grating accelerometer with enhanced sensitivity

The purpose of this study is to present the state of the art for fiber Bragg grating (FBG) acceleration sensing technologies from two aspects: the principle of the measurement dimension and the principle of the sensing configuration. Some commercial sensors have also been introduced and future work in this field has also been discussed. This paper could provide an important reference for the research community.,This review is to present the state of the art for FBG acceleration sensing technologies from two aspects: the principle of the measurement dimension (one-dimension and multi-dimension) and the principle of the sensing configuration (beam type, radial vibration type, axial vibration type and other composite structures).,The current research on developing FBG acceleration sensors is mainly focused on the sensing method, the construction and design of the elastic structure and the design of a new information detection method. This paper hypothesizes that in the future, the following research trends will be strengthened: common single-mode fiber grating of the low cost and high utilization rate; high sensitivity and strength special fiber grating; multi-core fiber grating for measuring single-parameter multi-dimensional information or multi-parameter information; demodulating equipment of low cost, small volume and high sampling frequency.,The principle of the measurement dimension and principle of the sensing configuration for FBG acceleration sensors have been introduced, which could provide an important reference for the research community.

Fiber Bragg grating based acceleration sensors: a review

An accelerometer based on the shorter fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is demonstrated and experimentally researched. The reflective optic spectra of FBG under inhomogeneous strain are researched by using the coupled-mode theory; the theoretical analysis demonstrates that the features of the reflective optic spectra are closely related with the chirping coefficient and the length of FBG under inhomogeneous strain. On these basics, an FBG accelerometer based on the double cantilever beams with small strain gradient is pointedly proposed. Experimental results show that the accelerometer has good response characteristic, and it provides broad flat frequency range from 4 to 30 Hz, corresponding sensitivity range from 7.76 to 10.8 pm/ms−2, while the flatness is less than 3 dB, the cross-axis sensitivity is less than 3.89% of the main-axis sensitivity, and the temperature sensitivity can be effectively eliminated by the self-symmetrical structure.

Low weight additive manufacturing FBG accelerometer: Design, characterization and testing

Sensing techniques based on Optical Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) has been increasingly applied in civil engineering
structures. However, it is still lacking of a reliable FBG based accelerometer for structural vibration measurement. In this
study, a novel FBG accelerometer was developed. The developed sensor has high sensitivity for acceleration
measurement especially in low frequency range where the natural modes of civil engineering structures are usually
concerned. Furthermore, the temperature influence can be self-compensated. This paper described the principle of the
sensor and the parameter optimization for improving the sensor's sensitivity in its measurement ranges of magnitude and
frequency. A prototype sensor was manufactured; the optimal viscosity of the damping liquid filled in the sensor was
selected experimentally. The amplitude-frequency relationship, the sensitivity and the linearity of the sensor were gained
through calibration tests. The results of the tests showed that the feasibility of the FBG accelerometer developed are
satisfactory for low frequency vibration measurement.

The invention relates to a fiber grating high-sensitivity accelerometer, which comprises a shell, a supporting frame, a metal sheet, a mass block, two threaded pipes, two elastic beams, two fiber gratings and two fine adjustment nuts, wherein the supporting frame is fixed on the top of the shell; the top of the mass block is fixedly connected with the top of the supporting frame through the metal sheet so as to ensure that the mass block is hung in the air; the two threaded pipes pass through the side wall of the shell respectively and extend out to the outer surface of the side wall; the two elastic beams are fixed between the outer walls on both sides of the supporting frame and the two threaded pipes respectively; the two fiber gratings are connected to the same optical fiber in series; the serial ends of the two optical fibers are welded on the mass block, and the other two ends of the two optical fibers pass through the two elastic beams on both sides of the supporting frame respectively and welded at the tail ends of the two elastic beams; and the two fine adjustment nuts are sleeved on pipe bodies of the threaded pipes extending out of the side wall respectively The accelerometer has the advantages of remote monitoring, strong networking capability, own temperature compensation, and the like
