In this study, various composite membranes consisting of sulfonated polybenzimidazole (SPBI) and varying amounts of sulfonated graphene oxide (SGO) were synthesized with an aim for their potential application in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). SPBI is prepared from PBI by reacting it with 2-chloro ethane sulfonic acid and the structure of SPBI is confirmed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X ray diffraction analysis. The proton conductivity, ion exchange capacity (IEC) and tensile modulus of the composites increase with the higher content of SGO in SPBI. Membranes with 3% and 5% SGO content exhibit superior IECs (0.912 and 1.001 meqg 1) and proton conductivity (0.016 and 0.018 S cm–1) at room temperature. The enhancement of these properties is owing to the increasing content of SO3H groups in the SGO/SPBI composite, increasing the channel availability for the transport of protons. Amongst the three composite membranes (1%, 3% and 5% of SGO in SPBI), the 3% SGO/SPBI composite membrane showed the highest open-circuit voltage of ~ 669 ± 18 mV, when applied in an MFC. Furthermore, the application of the nanocomposite membrane (3% SGO/SBI) in MFC showed a power density of 472.46 mWm 2 at a potential value of 0.234 V which was equivalent to 98.16% of Nafion membrane (481.3 mWm 2). Thus, the newly developed SGO/SPBI composite membranes have the potential for application in MFC.

Lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are anti-Stokes emitters, which can produce higher-energy ultraviolet/visible and near-infrared (NIR) luminescence when excited with low-energy NIR light. They are featured with nonphotobleaching, sharp emission peaks, superstability, low toxicity, low imaging background, and functional multimodality. These characteristics endow them to be useful as nanoprobes for diagnostic applications and imaging-guided cancer therapy. Importantly, the ability to convert tissue-penetrating NIR light into visible and ultraviolet range can expedite Fenton- or Fenton-based processes in chemical dynamic therapy (CDT), activate photosensitizers (PSs) to produce singlet oxygen in photodynamic therapy (PDT), and regulate light-controlled drug delivery processes for efficacious cancer therapy. The past decade witnessed fast progress of UCNPs as agents in single-mode therapy or combined therapies in the forefront researches on fighting cancer. This review summarizes the fundamental roles of UCNPs in cancer therapy, highlights types of cell deaths induced by excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS), and showcases cutting-edge applications in combined cancer therapies as well as imaging-guided cancer therapy. Challenges and outlook on the use of UCNPs for future directions in cancer therapy are also discussed. 

Upconversion Nanoparticles for Cancer Therapy

In this work, a green Hantzsch synthesis of 4-ferrocenylthiazole derivatives has been accomplished successfully. The Hantzsch reaction between bromoacetylferrocene and various aryl thioureas, 1-alkylindole-3- or 9-alkylcarbazole-3-carbothioamides proceeded efficiently in a deep eutectic solvent (DES) that is, choline chloride/glycerol (ChCl/Gly) (1 : 2 molar ratio) at 80 °C, avoiding the use of common volatile organic solvents. Moreover, the DES media could be reused up to three times without any appreciable decrease in the yield. The synthetic strategy has the attractive features such as mild and environmentally benign reaction conditions, experimental simplicity, easy work-up procedure and good yields. Subsequently, a preliminary screening for in vitro antibacterial activities of all these newly-synthesized compounds revealed that the halo-substituted (F, Cl, Br) compounds 3f–h showed significant antibacterial activities against Gram (+) bacterial B. subtilis and Gram (−) E. coli, among which the fluoro-substituted 3f possessed the best activity with the MIC value of 7.8125 μg mL−1, being higher than the reference drug ciprofoxacin (15.625 μg mL−1).
