Communication protocols for wireless sensor networks: A survey and comparison

Due to a battery constraint in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), prolonging their lifetime is important. Energy-efficient routing techniques for WSNs play a great role in doing so. In this paper, we articulate this problem and classify current routing protocols for WSNs into two categories according to their orientation toward either homogeneous or heterogeneous WSNs. They are further classified into static and mobile ones. We give an overview of these protocols in each category by summarizing their characteristics, limitations, and applications. Finally, some open issues in energy-efficient routing protocol design for WSNs are indicated.

Recent Advances in Energy-Efficient Routing Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks: A Review

Advances in hardware manufacturing technology, wireless communications, micro electro-mechanical devices and information processing technologies enabled the development of WSNs. These consist of numerous, low cost, small sensor nodes powered by energy constrained batteries. WSNs have attracted much interest from both industry and academia due to its wide range of applications such as environment monitoring, battlefield awareness, medical healthcare, military investigation and home appliances management. Thus information in sensor network needs to be protected against various attacks. Attackers may employ various security threats making the WSN systems vulnerable and unstable. This paper examines the security threats and vulnerabilities imposed by the distinctive open nature of WSNs. We first summarize the requirements in WSNs that includes both the survivality and security issues. Next, a comprehensive survey of various routing and middleware challenges for wireless networks is presented. Next, paper explores the potential security threats at different protocol layers. Here various security attacks are identified along with their countermeasures that were investigated by different researchers in recent years. We also provide a detailed survey of data aggregation and the energy-efficient routing protocols for WSNS. And finally, few unsolved technical challenges and the future scope for WSN security has been outlined.

Recent Advances in Attacks, Technical Challenges, Vulnerabilities and Their Countermeasures in Wireless Sensor Networks

Cooperative diversity has gained much interest due to its ability to mitigate multipath fading without using multiple antennas. There has been considerable research on how cooperative transmission can improve the performance of the physical layer. During the past few years, the researchers have started to take into consideration cooperative transmission in routing, and there has been a growing interest in designing and evaluating cooperative routing protocols. Routing algorithms that take into consideration the availability of cooperative transmission at the physical layer are known as cooperative routing algorithms. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of the existing cooperative routing techniques, together with the highlights of the performance of each strategy. This survey also provides a taxonomy of different cooperative routing protocols and outlines the fundamental components and challenges associated with cooperative routing objectives. Existing cooperative routing algorithms are compared and lay the groundwork for further research.

Cooperative Routing in Wireless Networks: A Comprehensive Survey

A collaborative multi-hop routing algorithm for maximum achievable rate

Cooperative communication (CC) allows multiple nodes to simultaneously transmit the same packet to the receiver so that the combined signal at the receiver can be correctly decoded. Since the cooperative communication can reduce the transmission power and extend the transmission coverage, it has been considered in minimum energy routing protocols to reduce the total energy consumption. However, previous research on cooperative routing only focuses on minimizing the total energy consumption from the source node to the destination node, which may lead to the unbalanced energy distribution among nodes. In this paper, we aim to study the impact of cooperative routing on balancing the energy distribution among nodes. By introducing a new routing scheme which carefully selects cooperative relay nodes and assigns their transmission power, our cooperative routing method can balance the energy among neighboring nodes and maximize the remaining lifetime of the network. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed cooperative routing algorithm significantly balances the energy distribution and prolongs the lifetime of the network.
