Ionic liquids (ILs) are a highly unique class of non-molecular solvents that possess melting points below 100 ºC.1 ILs that have melting points below room temperature are often referred to as room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). ILs possess a wide variety of unique physico-chemical properties, including low or negligible vapor pressure at room temperature, high thermal and electrochemical stability, and high conductivity.2.

Fabrication of iron oxide@MOF-808 as a sorbent for magnetic solid phase extraction of benzoylurea insecticides in tea beverages and juice samples.

Solid phase extraction (SPE) is an analytical procedure developed with the purpose of separating a target analyte from a complex sample matrix prior to quantitative or qualitative determination. The purpose of such treatment is twofold: elimination of matrix constituents that could interfere with the detection process or even damage analytical equipment as well as enriching the analyte in the sample so that it is readily available for detection. Dispersive solid phase extraction (dSPE) is a recent development of the standard SPE technique that is attracting growing attention due to its remarkable simplicity, short extraction time and low requirement for solvent expenditure, accompanied by high effectiveness and wide applicability. This review aims to thoroughly survey recently conducted analytical studies focusing on methods utilizing novel, interesting nanomaterials as dSPE sorbents, as well as known materials that have been only recently successfully applied in dSPE techniques, and evaluate their performance and suitability based on comparison with previously reported analytical procedures.

Recent Materials Developed for Dispersive Solid Phase Extraction

Herein, a novel, fusiform-like magnetic metal–organic framework material (Fe3O4-NH2@MOF-235) was fabricated by a facile two-step solvothermal approach. Then, Fe3O4-NH2@MOF-235 was applied as an adsorbent in magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for the simultaneous extraction and determination of five kinds of benzoylurea insecticides (flufenoxuron, chlorbenzuron, teflubenzuron, diflubenzuron and triflumuron) from honey, fruit juice and tap water samples. Moreover, potential variables influencing the MSPE efficiency were optimized. Under the optimized conditions, an excellent linearity was achieved in the range of 1.0–300.0 μg L−1 for teflubenzuron and flufenoxuron and 2.0–300.0 μg L−1 for diflubenzuron, chlorbenzuron and triflumuron, with the correlation coefficients of 0.9991–0.9995. The limits of detection for the analytes were 0.25–0.5 μg L−1, and the recoveries at three fortified concentration levels ranged from 76.45% to 90.74% for the honey samples, 79.95–95.27% for the fruit juice samples, and 84.02–99.62% for the tap water samples. The π–π stacking and hydrophobic interactions between Fe3O4-NH2@MOF-235 and the analytes played an important role in the adsorption process. Moreover, maximum adsorption could be achieved within 5 minutes with very little adsorbent for all the samples. Therefore, the magnetic Fe3O4-NH2@MOF-235 composite combined with MSPE is a convenient approach to detect benzoylurea insecticides in actual samples.

Synthesis of magnetic metal–organic framework composites, Fe3O4-NH2@MOF-235, for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of benzoylurea insecticides from honey, fruit juice and tap water samples

Efficient using of green heterogeneous catalysts from renewable natural sources through chemical modification for the cycloaddition of terminal epoxides with CO2 is attractive but still challenging. Luffa sponge is a cheap, biodegradable, abundant and renewable source with netting-like three-dimensional porous structure. Herein, we report a simple and facile approach to the preparation of a series of novel luffa sponge-supported dendritic imidazolium ILs heterogeneous catalysts LS-DIL-(G1-G3) with high ionic density from natural luffa sponge fibers. LS-DIL-(G1-G3) were properly characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, TGA, elemental analysis, and SEM. Among them, LS-DIL-G3 was found to exhibit the highest catalytic activity for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates under metal-free and solvent-free conditions. It was clearly observed that there was a positive dendritic effect on the yields of cyclic carbonates. Furthermore, a wide range of terminal epoxides was converted smoothly to the corresponding cyclic carbonates with high yields (84–99 %). LS-DIL-G3 could be reused for up to six consecutive runs without any obvious decline in catalytic activity. Importantly, the desired cyclic carbonates could be prepared on a multigram scale by using LS-DIL-G3 as a green heterogeneous catalyst.

Luffa sponge supported dendritic imidazolium ILs with high-density active sites as highly efficient and environmentally friendly catalysts for CO2 chemical fixation

In the present study, a convenient, low-cost, sensitive and environmentally friendly method for the determination of four benzoylurea insecticides (BUs) in water and tea beverage samples was developed. The alkalized luffa sponge fibers (AL) were modified by the ionic liquid 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C16MIM]Br) through physisorption and used as the sorbent of dispersive solid-phase extraction (DSPE). The sorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The retained analytes were eluted using 200 μL of methanol and then quantified by high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UVD). The influences of extraction parameters of [C16MIM]Br-AL-DSPE on the BUs were thoroughly studied. Under the optimal conditions, good linearity was observed over the concentration range of 1–500 ng mL−1, with coefficients of determination greater than 0.99. The limits of detection (LODs) of the developed method were 0.14–0.21 ng mL−1 in water and 0.19–0.23 ng mL−1 in tea beverage samples. Satisfactory recoveries were achieved in the range of 72.8–89.3%, with relative standard deviations lower than 10%. Finally, the established [C16MIM]Br-AL-DSPE-HPLC-UVD method was successfully applied for the determination of BU residues in environmental water and tea beverage samples.
