Molecular imprinting technology (MIT) concerns formation of selective sites in a polymer matrix with the memory of a template. Recently, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have aroused extensive attention and been widely applied in many fields, such as solid-phase extraction, chemical sensors and artificial antibodies owing to their desired selectivity, physical robustness, thermal stability, as well as low cost and easy preparation. With the rapid development of MIT as a research hotspot, it faces a number of challenges, involving biological macromolecule imprinting, heterogeneous binding sites, template leakage, incompatibility with aqueous media, low binding capacity and slow mass transfer, which restricts its applications in various aspects. This critical review briefly reviews the current status of MIT, particular emphasis on significant progresses of novel imprinting methods, some challenges and effective strategies for MIT, and highlighted applications of MIPs. Finally, some significant attempts in further developing MIT are also proposed (236 references).

Molecular imprinting science and technology: a survey of the literature for the years 2004-2011.

Sample preparation is a crucial bottleneck in the whole analytical process. Solid-phase sorbents (SPSs) have aroused increasing interest in research on sample preparation, as they have key roles in obtaining high clean-up and enrichment efficiency in the analysis of trace targets present in complex matrices. The objective of this review is to provide a broad overview of the recent advances and applications of SPSs in sample preparation prior to chromatographic analysis, during the period 2008-13. We include SPSs, such as molecularly-imprinted polymers, carbon nanomaterials, metallic nanoparticles and metal organic frameworks, focusing on solid-phase extraction, solid-phase microextraction, matrix solid-phase dispersion and stir-bar sorptive extraction of typical pollutants in environmental, biological, food and pharmaceutical samples. We propose remaining challenges and future perspectives to improve development of new SPSs and to apply them further. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Recent advances in solid-phase sorbents for sample preparation prior to chromatographic analysis

A novel Ag/Bi3TaO7 plasmonic photocatalyst has been prepared by a simple photoreduction process. The as-prepared Ag/Bi3TaO7 photocatalyst exhibited an enhanced photocatalytic activity for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) compared to that of a bare Bi3TaO7 catalyst. The 1 wt % Ag-loaded Bi3TaO7 sample showed the highest photocatalytic efficiency for TC degradation (85.42%) compared with those of the other samples. The enhanced photocatalytic activity could be ascribed to the synergistic effect of the surface plasmon resonance caused by Ag nanoparticles. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy demonstrated that the incorporation of silver nanoparticles onto the Bi3TaO7 surface promoted the separation of photogenerated carriers. In addition, an electron spin resonance (ESR) and trapping experiment revealed that the photoinduced active species hydroxyl radical and superoxide radical were the main active species in the photocatalytic process of TC degradation. Fabrication of a Ag/Bi3TaO7 Plasmonic Photocatalyst with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity for Degradation of Tetracycline.

Preparation of mixed-templates molecularly imprinted polymers and investigation of the recognition ability for tetracycline antibiotics

A rapid, specific, and sensitive method has been developed using molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) as solid-phase extraction sorbents for extraction of trace tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) in foodstuffs. MIPs were prepared by precipitation polymerization using tetracycline as the template. Under the optimal condition, the imprinting factors for MIPs were 4.1 (oxytetracycline), 7.0 (tetracycline), 7.4 (chlortetracycline), 7.7 (doxycycline), respectively. Furthermore, the performance of MIPs as solid-phase extraction sorbents was evaluated and high extraction efficiency of molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction (MISPE) procedure was demonstrated. Compared with commercial sorbents, MISPE gave a better cleanup efficiency than C18 cartridge and a higher recovery than Oasis HLB cartridge. Finally, the method of liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry coupled with molecular-imprinted solid-phase extraction was validated in real samples including lobster, duck, honey, and egg. The spiked recoveries of TCs ranged from 94.51% to 103.0%. The limits of detection were in the range of 0.1–0.3 μg kg−1.
