In this review, recent developments and future prospects of obtaining a better understanding of the regulation of nitrogen use efficiency in the main crop species cultivated in the world are presented. In these crops, an increased knowledge of the regulatory mechanisms controlling plant nitrogen economy is vital for improving nitrogen use efficiency and for reducing excessive input of fertilizers, while maintaining an acceptable yield. Using plants grown under agronomic conditions at low and high nitrogen fertilization regimes, it is now possible to develop whole-plant physiological studies combined with gene, protein, and metabolite profiling to build up a comprehensive picture depicting the different steps of nitrogen uptake, assimilation, and recycling to the final deposition in the seed. A critical overview is provided on how understanding of the physiological and molecular controls of N assimilation under varying environmental conditions in crops has been improved through the use of combined approaches, mainly based on whole-plant physiology, quantitative genetics, and forward and reverse genetics approaches. Current knowledge and prospects for future agronomic development and application for breeding crops adapted to lower fertilizer input are explored, taking into account the world economic and environmental constraints in the next century.

Physiological perspectives of changes over time in maize yield dependency on nitrogen uptake and associated nitrogen efficiencies: A review

Charles Darwin founded root system architecture research in 1880 when he described a root bending with gravity. Curving, elongating, and branching are the three cellular processes in roots that underlie root architecture. Together they determine the distribution of roots through soil and time, and hence the plants' access to water and nutrients, and anchorage. Most knowledge of these cellular processes comes from seedlings of the model dicotyledon, Arabidopsis, grown in soil-less conditions with single treatments. Root systems in the field, however, face multiple stimuli that interact with the plant genetics to result in the root system architecture. Here we review how soil conditions influence root system architecture; focusing on cereals. Cereals provide half of human calories, and their root systems differ from those of dicotyledons. We find that few controlled-environment studies combine more than one soil stimulus and, those that do, highlight the complexity of responses. Most studies are conducted on seedling roots; those on adult roots generally show low correlations to seedling studies. Few field studies report root and soil conditions. Until technologies are available to track root architecture in the field, soil analyses combined with knowledge of the effects of factors on elongation and gravitropism could be ranked to better predict the interaction between genetics and environment (G×E) for a given crop. Understanding how soil conditions regulate root architecture can be effectively used to design soil management and plant genetics that best exploit synergies from G×E of roots.

There is increasing public pressure to reduce the environmental impacts of agricultural production. Therefore, one key challenge to producers is to manage their crop production systems in order to minimize losses of nitrogen to air or water, while achieving crop yield and quality goals. Many strategies have been developed in recent years to meet this challenge. These include: development of new tools to measure crop N status in order to refine in-season fertilizer N management, development of new soil N tests to improve prediction of soil N supply, development of new fertilizer N products with release patterns more closely matched to crop N uptake patterns, and development of site-specific N management strategies. Shoot growth potential drives N uptake in maize plants and correlates with root growth in the soil

Selection for nitrogen (N)-efficient crops is considered to be an effective approach for minimizing the input and the loss of N fertilizers in agricultural fields. This study investigated the hypothesis that nitrate supply may induce changes in root morphology so that N uptake efficiency can be influenced. Different levels of nitrate concentration (0.04, 0.2, 2, and 4 mM) were supplied to five maize (Zea mays L.) inbred lines that had shown different N efficiencies. Possible correlations between N-uptake efficiency and several root parameters of root morphology were evaluated. The two N-efficient varieties, 478 and H21, had higher shoot and root weight and absorbed more N than the two N-inefficient lines, Wu312 and Zong31, especially under low N supply.
