Introductory Overview

Electromagnetism is a difficult subject to learn because the phenomenon is not observed directly and does not have a perceivable, concrete image. The visualization of the phenomenon will greatly help beginners understand electromagnetics. This paper proposes an augmented-reality-based visualization system of the magnetic flux density around current-generating objects. The system can be realized with a portable magnetic field sensor and a familiar device—a smartphone. The effectiveness of the system is verified through experiments, and our findings suggest that the system can effectively help an operator gain an intuitive understanding of the magnetic flux density.

Development of Augmented-Reality-Based Magnetic Field Visualization System as an Educational Tool

Recently, there have been calls to decenter theories of the urban to theorize the rural as a formative force. While recognizing that the urban remains structurally dominant, scholars point towards the interconnectedness of the urban and the rural under present capitalist transformation processes. We proposed to study recent urban–rural entanglements through the heuristic of rurban assemblages. We focused on rural groups and how they negotiate their integration and disintegration into the urban cosmos while remaining embedded within their rural context through the lens of land. This article adds to the debate on the contradictory meanings and uses of land in the context of land dispossession and commodification for urban and industrial development. The work specifically paid attention to the reshaping of subject–land relations and analyzed how implicit or explicit references to the city and the countryside permeate the construction of values and uses of land among the old and new social groups in the metropolitan region of Bengaluru, South India.

Negotiating Land in Rurban Bengaluru, South India

We know that, through lobbying and contributions, organizations systematically seek to influence political outcomes in liberal democracies. But what role do organizations play in an authoritarian regime’s strategy for remaining in power? We argue that in order to maintain stability and consolidate control, an authoritarian regime must actively work to preempt dissent and the emergence of oppositional challengers. When potential challengers are unknown ex ante, the best guess is that they may rise from the ranks of those who run economically powerful organizations. Ability to control these organizations then minimizes the risk of instability. One way in which the regime accomplishes this control is through pro-forma cooptation—the process by which organizational leaders are assigned to positions with nominal authority in the government, thus ensuring their allegiance. We develop a theory predicting which organizations will be targeted for cooptation and posit that absolute and relative size and industry context are the key determinants. Empirical analyses of reappointment to congress of senior business executives in China offer support for the theory. The findings also offer a way to think of cooptation that is different from the conventional view that it drives adaptation (because power sharing widens representation and vested interests). By contrast, pro-forma cooptation of prominent organizations under authoritarian rule reifies the regime’s dominance and solidifies its control, thus promoting inertia through the reproducibility of hierarchy in the social structure.

ABSTRACT Slum tourism has become a growing topic in the tourism literature, particularly in relation to the Global South. Simultaneously, a significant body of literature has emerged addressing informal urbanism, primarily focusing on informal settlements. This exploratory review delves into the relevant literature on slum tourism and draws upon the related bodies of knowledge on urban informality and urban tourism. It explores the capacities and limitations of slum tourism, reflects on the potentials of interdisciplinary studies exploring the intersections of informal urbanism and tourism, and concludes by discussing the emerging debates concerning slum tourism. The article contributes to the emerging body of knowledge by providing a better understanding of the dynamics of slum tourism within a global context.

Slum tourism: an exploratory review

A few decades ago, the way people to absorb knowledge mainly relied on paper books. However, because of the development of technology, recent years, people spend a lot of time to use smartphone. This makes people start to use smartphone to absorb knowledge, even these knowledges come from books. The situation also let people, especially young people, preference to read book from smartphone. Moreover, electronic book, which is also a popular way to preserver precious documents and graphic materials, also become a new method for providing people knowledge as same as paper book. Thus, for better maintain the advantage of using smartphone, such as easy to carry, and keep the advantage of reading paper book, such as the reading quality, we develop an intuitive operation mobile application for people, to simulate a near-realistic reading experience through VR and AR technology while people using smartphone.
