Cultivating Sustainable and Healthy Cities: A Systematic Literature Review of the Outcomes of Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture

The increasingly stringent demands of the regulatory authorities, particularly for longterm safety, would lead one to believe that they might have a more benign attitude towards natural products. Indeed, there is an act, the Dietary Supplement Health Education Act, that appears as a charter for those wishing to develop ‘nutraceutics’. In essence this is the route through which the bulk of the estimated $2 billion per annum sales of Serenoa repens are generated in the USA. Another frightening statistic is that the AUA has estimated that at least half of all patients with BPH will have self-medicated their LUTS using a nutraceutic, particularly a variant of S. repens , before arriving in the urologist’s office. This is a phenomenon no longer restricted to Europe, but is happening on a street corner near you!

It's only natural

In the last year, in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, scientific papers have appeared in which the authors are trying to identify factors (including environmental) favoring the spread of this disease. This paper presents the spatial differentiation in the total number of COVID-19 cases and deaths during the full year (March 2020-March 2021) of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in Poland versus green-blue spaces (green-i.a. forests, orchards, meadows and pastures, recreational and rest areas, biologically active arable land; blue-lakes and artificial water reservoirs, rivers, ecological areas and internal waters) and population density. The analysis covers 380 counties, including 66 cities. This study used daily reports on the progress of the pandemic in Poland published by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Poland and unique, detailed data on 24 types of land use available in the Statistics Poland database. Statistical relationships were determined between the above-mentioned environmental variables and the variables characterizing COVID-19 (cases and deaths). Various basic types of regression models were analysed. The optimal model was selected, and the determination coefficient, significance level and the values of the parameters of these relationships, together with the estimation error, were calculated. The obtained results indicated that the higher the number of green-blue spaces in individual counties, the lower the total number of COVID-19 infections and deaths. These relationships were described by logarithmic and homographic models. In turn, an increase in the population density caused an increase in COVID-19 cases and deaths, according to the power model. These results can be used in the current analysis of the spread of the pandemic, including the location of potential outbreaks. In turn, the developed models can be used as a tool in forecasting the development of the pandemic and making decisions about the implementation of preventive measures.

An urban agriculture park (UAP) is a mixture of various kinds of urban agriculture and has a group of administrators to plan and manage its landscapes Thus, the relationships between users and the ability of the UAPs to provide services are crucial This study investigated the user profiles of three kinds of UAPs in Beijing, China Investigation of 345 interviewees suggested that most of the users have an upper-middle level income and are well educated Social connections vary across different types of UAPs An assessment matrix of landscape services was introduced for a pioneer of UAP, Little Donkey Farm, based on questionnaires, a field survey, and indicators of landscape patterns Pearson correlations between service demands and users’ characters showed age, companions, and education level were significantly correlated to the needs of scenery and education services The landscape with the highest supply value was the vegetable plots planted by members The scenery service was not adequately supplied, and 315% of the areas did not meet the demand Based on the budgets of supply and demand, six types of landscape should be optimized This study provides an approach to understand the path of landscape service provision in UAP and supports basic knowledge on how to better involve urban agriculture in sustainable development
