The concept of manufacturing grid (MGrid) is to utilize manufacturing resources distributed in heterogeneous systems and different places to collaboratively manufacture products the market requires. The solution is based on adopting grid technologies, information technologies, advanced manufacturing technologies, management technologies, etc., to realize the complete sharing of all kinds of geographically distributed and heterogeneous manufacturing resources in the form of virtual enterprises. After summarizing the grid technology and its applications, we propose the concept of MGrid. The application of grid technology in manufacturing and the related works about MGrid are investigated. The connotation of MGrid are put forward, including its basic features, the structure and main functions, the main research contents, the architecture, and key technologies. A resource service optimal-selection system of MGrid and its main functions are researched, including resource service description, resource service publication, resource service discovery, resource service quality of service (QoS) evaluation, and resource service optimal-selection evaluation. An application prototype, namely magnetic bearing resources sharing and service platform under manufacturing grid, is developed. It validates the resource service sharing and optimal-selection system in MGrid.

Grid technology is a new sustentation for the sharing of global manufacturing resources To promote the application of grid technologies in the manufacturing industry, a framework for a manufacturing grid (MG) has been expatiated The framework is composed of a network infrastructure layer, a manufacturing resource aggregation layer, a manufacturing resource management layer, a manufacturing service application layer and a MG portal layer Modelling manufacturing resources, one key technology of implementing the MG application system, has been studied intensively A manufacturing resource hierarchy model (MRHM), which consists of a manufacturing resource layer, a resource expressing layer and a resource interface layer, is proposed In the model, various manufacturing resources are aggregated into a resource layer; all resource information is encapsulated in an information expressing layer employing XML (extensible markup language) schema; all accessing operations to resources are defined in the resource interface layer using WSDL (web service description language) Lastly, being the validation of MRHM, a standard part library system based on Unigraphics180 and SQL Server2000 is encapsulated as a resource node in the MG The node provides online services like querying information for standard parts, viewing and downloading geometry models of standard parts, and so on

Based on the analysis of the requirements and technology driving force of the MGrid, the basic features and connotation of MGrid were discussed. The definition of the MGrid was discussed as well, the system structure of MGrid system is presented, and the levels for MGrid and its main functions are introduced. Finally the main research content, key technologies and related work of MGrid are proposed.

Manufacturing enterprises are now facing serious challenges that have been evident and moreover closely associated with the dynamics of globalization After analyzing the features of process preparation and grid technology, a grid-based agile process preparation system is presented Firstly, the concept of digitization agile process preparation is put forward and a proposed framework to support DAPPS is followed Secondly, with grid technology introduced into process preparation research, a six-layer agile process preparation system grid (APPSG) is constructed Thirdly, by studying the mapping between tasks and workflow the application process of APPSG is derived Finally, the application steps are illustrated by an example The research in this paper, however, is beneficial to the application of manufacturing grid and information sharing of national defense industry

A grid-based agile process preparation system

Networked manufacturing is a trend of manufacturing industry and Application Service Provider (ASP) is its mainstream mode. In order to solve the current questions of networked manufacturing, grid technology was put forward as a feasible approach to reform the networked manufacturing system based on ASP; considering the characteristic of grid technology, a new design constructing manufacturing grid system for ASP mode was presented and then the application architecture and the technology architecture of this system were investigated intensively. Application architecture was composed of user layer, application service layer, grid middleware layer and grid resource layer, technology architecture was composed of fabric, connectivity, resource, collective and application and integrated Globus Toolkit with them. Finally, an application case was given. The research, development and implementation of manufacturing grid system for ASP mode provide a realizable solution for manufacturing industry. As a result, the competitive ability of enterprise would be promoted.
