Sudden shock and stock market network structure characteristics: A comparison of past crisis events

PurposeThis study attempts to assess the role that institutional quality (IQ) plays in influencing inflows and outflows of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for BRICS nations as burgeoning FDI is flowing into and out of these countries. Moreover, this paper explores the impact of individual governance indicators separately on the FDI flows.Design/methodology/approachThe study analyses this nexus for these emerging economies for the period 1996–2019 using autoregressive distributed lag technique.FindingsThe study indicates a significant and positive coefficient for IQ in India and South Africa, suggesting that improving IQ would enhance the IFDI. However, for outward FDI (OFDI)–IQ linkage, the results show a negatively significant impact of IQ on OFDI for Brazil and Russia. Additionally, the authors observe control of corruption as a significant institutional component for attracting inward FDI for Brazil, India and South Africa, whereas it is an insignificant factor for Russia and China. Further, the authors notably find that upgrading the governance indicators will decrease the level of OFDI for Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa. On the contrary, findings suggest that improving the IQ will foster the OFDI for India.Originality/valueThis study uses time-series analysis instead of cross-country analysis (used extensively in literature), avoiding heterogeneity. Further, this study explores the IFDI–IQ link for BRICS nations, which are captivating a significant chunk of IFDI, and still not given much attention in the extant literature. Moreover, the authors identify the impact of IQ on the OFDI, neglected by the existing studies.

Does institutional quality matter for foreign direct investment flows? Empirical evidence from BRICS economies

PurposeThe stringency policy and economic support policy in response to and to address the coronavirus disease 2019 have become a significant concern since the end of 2019. The motivation that led to this study is that, the selection of the stringency policy and the economic support policy appear to have brought about the opposite effects of the environmental costs of carbon dioxide emissions. The study's objective is to examine the contradictory impacts of these stringency and economic support policies on carbon dioxide emissions.Design/methodology/approachThis study applies panel data for the top four countries responsible for carbon dioxide emission, namely China, the United States of America, India and Russia. A fully modified ordinary least squares estimator and dynamic ordinary least squares estimator are employed to determine the long-run parameters.FindingsThe results indicate that the effect of reduced carbon dioxide emissions due to a one-unit increase in the stringency policy is greater than the effect of increased carbon dioxide emissions caused by a one-unit increase in the economic support policy. Hence, if the two policies are implemented simultaneously, a positive net effect on environmental costs will be gained.Research limitations/implicationsThe study investigates in a general scope, the impact these response policies have on the environment. Future researchers may enhance the research on environmental impact in different sectors due to the implementation of both policies to enrich the analytical perspective.Practical implicationsThe results have provided implications for policymakers to emphasize more on stringency-oriented policies while giving economic support to the low-income or unemployed households in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.Originality/valueDespite the foreseen effects of the stringency policy and economic support policy, there has hardly been any studies that have explored empirically the nexus between both policies with carbon dioxide emissions in one empirical model. Furthermore, the paper uses the high-frequency data in determining the contradictory impacts of stringency policy and economic support policy on CO2 emissions.

Evaluating the COVID-19 response policy's impact on carbon dioxide emissions in the top four CO2 emission countries

This study discusses the impact of Covid-19 on important financial performance indicators and risk indicators of US banks using quarterly panel data of the 87 insured U.S.-chartered commercial banks, covering periods from 2017 to 2021. Based on random effect and two step system GMM models, we provide strong empirical evidence of the adverse impact of the pandemic on important accounting and market-based measures and risk indicators. The presence of Covid-19 implies declining profitability, deteriorating cost efficiency and decreasing level 3 assets to securities ratios. It also adversely impacted key risk indicators by increasing credit risk and the risk of regulatory capital. Using quantile regression, we have also identified heterogeneity among banks in terms of financial performance and risk indicators. The findings of the study will add value in research to the existing literature and provide the newest findings to the stakeholders who are engaged with the US banking sector. 

Heterogeneous Impact of Covid-19 on the US Banking Sector

The COVID-19 has impacted the social economy of various provinces in China to varying degrees. How to quickly restore the social economy has become the most concerned issue of the Party, the country and all sectors of society. This paper combines the entropy weight method and TOPSIS method-technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution, taking the financial policy transmission mechanism as the theoretical basis, and selects the data of 29 provinces in China to obtain the contribution of finance in the socio-economic resilience under the pandemic situation. The empirical analysis results show that the weights of financial policy, pandemic situation and financial basis are different. It can be clearly seen from the weight data that the financial basis is crucial to the socio-economic resilience. Although the COVID-19 pandemic will cause huge losses to the whole society and will also seriously hinder the socio-economic recovery, the effective implementation of financial policies and the good trend of the pandemic situation have a significant promoting effect on the socio-economic recovery.
