Electrospinning has gained greater consideration in nanotechnology due to its flexible and superior processing technique. It is considered a unique method to produce nanofibers from polymeric, ceramic, and carbonaceous materials. The greater attraction of electrospinning can be ascribed to the following reasons viz., the diameter of the electrospun nanofibers can be controlled in ease, continuity in fiber and capability to produce three-dimensional (3D) fibrous structures. Hence, electrospinning is gaining more interest among the researchers targeting diverse fields of application such as wound dressing, drug delivery and filtration etc. A large number of review articles are available in these areas. However, the application of electrospun nanofibers in food packaging field is still in its infancy. This comprehensive review mainly focuses on the application of electrospun nanofibers for food and packaging applications. A detailed insight on the electrospinning of food proteins and carbohydrates is enumerated. The recent developments and challenges in electrospinning for food and smart packaging applications were also discussed.

The complex interaction of cells with biomaterials (i.e., materiobiology) plays an increasingly pivotal role in the development of novel implants, biomedical devices, and tissue engineering scaffolds to treat diseases, aid in the restoration of bodily functions, construct healthy tissues, or regenerate diseased ones. However, the conventional approaches are incapable of screening the huge amount of potential material parameter combinations to identify the optimal cell responses and involve a combination of serendipity and many series of trial-and-error experiments. For advanced tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, highly efficient and complex bioanalysis platforms are expected to explore the complex interaction of cells with biomaterials using combinatorial approaches that offer desired complex microenvironments during healing, development, and homeostasis. In this review, we first introduce materiobiology and its high-throughput screening (HTS). Then we present an in-depth of the recent progress of 2D/3D HTS platforms (i.e., gradient and microarray) in the principle, preparation, screening for materiobiology, and combination with other advanced technologies. The Compendium for Biomaterial Transcriptomics and high content imaging, computational simulations, and their translation toward commercial and clinical uses are highlighted. In the final section, current challenges and future perspectives are discussed. High-throughput experimentation within the field of materiobiology enables the elucidation of the relationships between biomaterial properties and biological behavior and thereby serves as a potential tool for accelerating the development of high-performance biomaterials.

Electrospinning has been recognized as an efficient technique for the fabrication of polymer nanofibers. Various polymers have been successfully electrospun into ultrafine fibers in recent years. These electrospun biopolymer nanofibers have potential applications for wound dressing based upon their unique properties. In this paper, a comprehensive review is presented on the researches and developments related to electrospun biopolymer nanofibers including processing, structure and property, characterization, and applications. Information of those polymers together with their processing condition for electrospinning of ultrafine fibers has been summarized in the paper. The application of electrospun natural biopolymer fibers in wound dressings was specifically discussed. Other issues regarding the technology limitations, research challenges, and future trends are also discussed.

Advances in Electrospinning of Natural Biomaterials for Wound Dressing

Electrospun natural-synthetic composite nanofibers, which possess favorable biological and mechanical properties, have gained widespread attention in tissue engineering. However, the development of biomimetic nanofibers of hybrids remains a huge challenge due to phase separation of the polymer blends. Here, aqueous sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution is proposed to modulate the miscibility of a representative natural-synthetic hybrid of gelatin (GT) and polycaprolactone (PCL) for electrospinning homogeneous composite nanofibers. Alkali-doped GT/PCL solutions and nanofibers examined at macroscopic, microscopic, and internal molecular levels demonstrate appropriate miscibility of GT and PCL after introducing the alkali dopant. Particularly, homogeneous GT/PCL nanofibers with smooth surface and uniform diameter are obtained when aqueous NaOH solution with a concentration of 10 m is used. The fibers become more hydrophilic and possess improved mechanical properties both in dry and wet conditions. Moreover, biocompatibility experiments show that stem cells adhere to and proliferate better on the alkali-modified nanofibers than the untreated one. This study provides a facile and effective approach to solve the phase separation issue of the synthetic-natural hybrid GT/PCL and establishes a correlation of compositionally and morphologically homogeneous composite nanofibers with respect to cell responses.
