We report on a three-dimensional direct numerical simulation study of flow structure and heat transport in the annular centrifugal Rayleigh–Benard convection (ACRBC) system, with cold inner and hot outer cylinders corotating axially, for the Rayleigh number range decreases. This effect can be explained by a simple model that accounts for the curvature effects and the radially dependent centrifugal force in ACRBC.

Effects of radius ratio on annular centrifugal Rayleigh–Bénard convection

In this paper, a high-order solver combining the flux reconstruction (FR) method and the thermal lattice Boltzmann flux solver (FRTLBFS) is developed for accurately and efficiently simulating incompressible thermal flows. The conservative differential equations recovered from Chapman-Enskog analysis of the thermal lattice Boltzmann equation are solved by the high-order FR method. The thermal lattice Boltzmann method is only applied to reconstruct the local solution used for evaluating fluxes at the solution and flux points. Unlike the traditional Navier-Stokes-Boussinesq (NSB) solvers where the inviscid and viscous terms are treated separately, the inviscid and viscous fluxes in the current FRTLBFS are coupled and computed uniformly. In comparison with the recently developed high-order flux reconstruction thermal lattice Boltzmann method, the FRTLBFS holds advantages such as high-order accuracy, good stability, and compactness but is more efficient and low storage, since only macroscopic flow variables including density, velocity, and temperature are stored and evolved. In addition, the physical boundary conditions in FRTLBFS can be directly implemented by using the same method as in conventional NSB solvers. Numerical validations of the proposed method are implemented by simulating (a) the porous plate problem, (b) natural convection in a square cavity, (c) unsteady natural convection in a tall cavity, and (d) thermal lid-driven cavity flow. Numerical results demonstrate that the present solver is an attractive tool to simulate incompressible thermal flows due to its high-order accuracy, stability, and low memory cost.

SPH modeling of natural convection in horizontal annuli

We report on a three-dimensional direct numerical simulation study of flow structure and heat transport in the annular centrifugal Rayleigh-Benard convection (ACRBC) system, with cold inner and hot outer cylinders corotating axially, for the Rayleigh number range Ra $ \in [{10^6},{10^8}]$ and radius ratio range $\eta = {R_i}/{R_o} \in [0.3,0.9]$. This study focuses on the dependence of flow properties on the radius ratio $\eta$. The temperature and velocity fields reveal that different curvatures of the inner and outer cylinders of the ACRBC system lead to asymmetric movements of hot and cold plumes under the action of Coriolis force, resulting in the formation of zonal flow. The physical mechanism of zonal flow is verified by the dependence of the drift frequency of the large-scale circulation rolls and the space- and time-averaged azimuthal velocity on $\eta$. We find that the larger $\eta$ is, the weaker the zonal flow becomes. We show that the heat transport efficiency increases with $\eta$. It is also found that the bulk temperature deviates from the arithmetic mean temperature and the deviation increases as $\eta$ decreases. This effect can be explained by a simple model that accounts for the curvature effects and the radially-dependent centrifugal force in ACRBC.

Low Mach number flows are common and typical in industrial applications When simulating these flows, performance of traditional compressible flow solvers can deteriorate in terms of both efficiency and accuracy In this paper, a new high-order numerical method for two-dimensional (2-D) state low Mach number flows is proposed by combining flux reconstruction (FR) and preconditioning Firstly, a Couette flow problem is used to assess the efficiency and accuracy of preconditioned FR It is found that the FR scheme with preconditioning is much more efficient than the original FR scheme Meanwhile, this improvement still preserves the numerical accuracy Using this new method and without the Boussinesq assumption, classic natural convection is directly simulated for cases of small and large temperature differences For the small temperature difference, a p and h refinement study is conducted to verify the grid convergence and accuracy Then, the influence of the Rayleigh number (Ra) is analyzed By comparing with the reference results, the numerical results of preconditioned FR is very close to that calculated by incompressible solvers Furthermore, a large temperature difference test case is calculated and analyzed, indicating this method is not limited by the Boussinesq assumption and is also applicable to heat convection with large temperature differences
