Assessing carbon sequestration by measuring above ground and below ground biomass with non destructive method is globally acknowledged. The studies from forest ecosystem have made a significant contribution in quantifying carbon stock. This type of study has now gaining importance in urban ecosystems. Most of the institutions and universities have natural forest and manmade plantations are now assessing carbon stocks in India and elsewhere. In the present study Kuvempu university campus which is a part of Central Western Ghats was assessed. The total area of the campus covers 326.21 acres with dry deciduous forest of Bhadra tiger reserve. A total of 5596 individuals were recorded with a carbon stock of 457.0 t ha−1 and the dominant Terminalia paniculata contributed a total of 13% of carbon stock. The storing capacity varies with species diversity, disturbance gradient and phenology. This pilot study has made an attempt in advertising the present area in global carbon stock assessment. Therefore, every educational institutions/universities can easily contribute to global CO2 mitigation by restoring the native species in their campus and even it supports biodiversity and helps in future long term monitoring.

Carbon Sequestration Potential of Trees in Kuvempu University Campus Forest Area, Western Ghats, Karnataka

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to use the framework of stakeholder analysis in a participatory democracy, used in forest management planning, for arriving at the best management option for selected sacred groves of Kachchh. This is achieved by accounting for economic, cultural and ecological values and the resulting outcomes in the complex institutional mechanism. Additionally, this study provides a framework for complex decision-making that characterizes the management of sacred groves involving multiple criteria and options accounting for multiple stakeholders that involve conflicting interests.Design/methodology/approachThe analytical hierarchy process was used to calculate the global priorities of management options using the relative importance of stakeholders, weights of different decision criteria to arrive at the best management practice for selected groves of Kachchh. The global priorities of management options rank management practices based on stakeholders' values and their effects on the choice of management strategy as well as on the potential to attain a compromise between competing interests. For this purpose, survey responses of 141 individuals belonging to seven different stakeholder categories were analyzed. Along with focus group discussions, and personal interviews, a stratified random sampling technique was used to survey respondents.FindingsBased on the global priority weights of the alternatives, it is determined that the restoration management option (guggal is restored by planting new guggal sapplings, cattle grazing is prohibited and high levels of ecosystem goods and services are provided) had the highest score, followed by the preservation management option (grazing is allowed on the periphery, juvenile guggal is preserved and moderate ecosystem goods and services are provided). Therefore, restoration of sacred groves is the best management practice of sacred groves in West Kachchh, offering a compromise between maximizing provision of ecosystem services and economic benefits in terms of allowing cattle grazing.Originality/valueThough there are several studies on best management practices for community-owned forests, irrigation systems, and pasture lands, and the role of local institutions in sustaining these common-pool resources; such studies for sacred groves are absent, despite sacred groves being one of the longest surviving common-pool resources that has sustained it over several decades. This is the first study that uses the framework of stakeholder analysis to arrive at the best management practice for sacred groves. The uniqueness of the study lies in a comprehensive evaluation of ecological–economic–cultural interests of multiple stakeholders toward management of sacred groves.

The forests of the world are a big carbon sink. About two third of the globe’s terrestrial carbon, is sequestrated in the standing forests, forest under kept plants, leaf and forest debris, and in forest soils (7).Attarsumba range has 23 villages. The total area of villages is 2,931.71 hectare, which covers about 26.02 % of total Gandhinagar Forest Division.  Total number of species present in the range is 78.There is a major 10 dominated tree species selected for study. The maximum number of major trees species present in girth class 0-30 cm.The range is dominated by Acacia tortilis (Forsk) Hyne (2,41,040). It makes 41% of the total number of selected tree species (5,79,340). Carbon sequestration is the long term storage of carbon in oceans, soils, vegetation (especially forests), and geological formations (6). Carbon sequestration is the process of removing excess carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere.The total carbon stock of the major trees species in Attarsumba range is 46,093.55 ton. Out of which range has maximum carbon stock in Acacia tortilis (Forsk) hyne (26,096.57 ton). It has 56% of the total carbon stock of major trees species in range. The species Cordia perrottetii Wt has lowest carbon sequestration potential i.e. 25.15 tonnes. The second lowest carbon sequestration potential species was Phoenix sylvestris (L) Roxb (86.43 tonnes).

It was conducted by pre-investment survey now known as forest survey of India, Dehradun, India to know how much supply of raw material is possible from forest resources. Gandhinagar Forest Division has 48 villages and area of 11,263.31 hectare. It was surveyed covering the entire area in 20 meter wide strips laid parallel to each other with 200 m distance from one another. Strip enumeration methodology was thus adopted. Range wise details enumeration revealed that in Attarsumba range is rich range with 12,35,650 trees and available tree species are 78.

2 ABSTRACT: Aim of this study is to analyse the regression correlation between GBH and Carbon stock in the major tree species of Dharoi Range, Gandhinagar Forest Division. Major ten dominant tree species in Dharoi range were selected for study. Total biomass and carbon sequestered in the major tree species have been estimated using non- destructive method. Based on this analysis and interpretation the allometric model is prepared which will be helpful to estimate carbon stock of major tree species by Girth at Breast Height (GBH). Species like Anogeissus pendula Edgew, Acacia tortilis (Forsk) Hyne and Wrightia tinctoria R Br were dominant while Bauhinia racemosa Lam, Butea monosperma (Lam) Taub less in number. The maximum carbon stock estimated in Acacia tortilis (Forsk) Hyne, Anogeissus pendula Edgew, and Wrightia tinctoria R Br whereas Bauhinia racemosa Lam, Butea monosperma (Lam) Taub showed least carbon stock. On the basis of analysis the regression correlation between GBH and Carbon Stock is linear in Dharoi range for major tree species. On the basis of study following species showed a deviation from the correlation viz, Butea monosperma (Lam) Taub having very small ratio while Azadirachta indica A Juss having a very large ratio in the range. This shows that the species which having small ratio are poorly adapted to that particular ranges while the species shows large ratio are very well adapted to this range. The results are discussed in the context of their adaptive significance and use in determining suitability of the tree species for afforestation, forest regeneration and establishment of shelter belts to arrest deforestation.

Anti-citrullinated antibodies are autoantibodies detected in the blood of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients in the early stage. These autoantibodies recognize an epitope of citrullinated peptides found on the surface of filaggrin protein and are cross-reactive in immune response. Since the expression of filaggrin protein is associated with autoantibodies secretion, it may act as a potential serological marker for the detection of RA in early stage. In the present study, the contribution of filaggrin sequence repeats towards antigenicity was investigated using bioinformatic approaches. The electrostatic potential of citrullinated filaggrin repeats and its antigenicity was found to be the prominent factors for invoking such an immune response.
