A novel auxetic unit cell for 3D metamaterials of designated negative Poisson's ratio

The simplified multireflection interference theory is proposed to analyze the physical insight quantitatively of the ultra-broadband metamaterial absorber (MMA) loading lumped resisters in which the resonant layer, including lumped resisters and the substrate, are equivalent to a homogeneous and isotropic effective medium. The simulated full width at half maximum (FWHM) absorption bandwidths is approximately 11.2 GHz with relative FWHM absorption bandwidths of 116.7% for a normal incidence electromagnetic wave. Microwave experiments are performed and measured results are in good agreement with the numerical results. The absorbance of the proposed MMA calculated by the simplified multi-reflection interference theory coincides well with simulated and measured results.

Analysis of ultra-broadband metamaterial absorber based on simplified multi-reflection interference theory

Absorber is an important component in various optical devices. Here we report a novel type of asymmetric absorber in the visible and near-infrared spectrum which is based on lossy Bragg stacks. The lossy Bragg stacks can achieve near-perfect absorption at one side and high reflection at the other within the narrow bands (several nm) of resonance wavelengths, whereas display almost identical absorption/reflection responses for the rest of the spectrum. Meanwhile, this interesting wavelength-selective asymmetric absorption behavior persists for wide angles, does not depend on polarization and can be ascribed to the lossy characteristics of the Bragg stacks. Moreover, interesting Fano resonance with easily tailorable peak profiles can be realized using the lossy Bragg stacks.

We report the numerical study of a selective thermal emitter based on a metallic multilayered structure consisting of a graded antireflection top layer, a middle layer with uniform porosity (i.e., volume fraction of voids), and a nonporous substrate layer. Simulation results show that the proposed emitters feature an emission edge in near-IR where the emissivity drops from over 0.9 to below 0.1, for both the TE and TM polarizations. Moreover, these desired emission characteristics persist for a wide range of emission angles with the emission edge nearly nonshifted, making the proposed emitters promising for achieving isotropic thermal emission. The designed emitters are particularly attractive for the thermal-photovoltaic applications by suppressing emission below the photovoltaic material bandgap, which is normally in near-IR.

 In this paper, an ultrathin dual-band metamaterial absorber (MMA) is designed. Its top layer consists of two nested split-ring resonators. The calculation result demonstrates that there are two distinct absorption peaks, which are 9.258GHz and 21.336GHz, with absorption rate of 99.78% and 96.91%. It also show polarization-insensitive for normal incident and its thickness is only 1.96% of the wavelength of its lowest absorption frequency. Moreover, we explore the MMA’s absorption mechanism and analyze the influence of main structural parameters on the MMA’s absorption characteristics. The proposed MMA has simple structure and high absorption, it can be applied in electromagnetic stealth, bolometers, sensor and other fields.

Ultrathin Dual-band Metamaterial Absorber

We design an ultra-thin infrared metamaterial thermal radiator which has nearly isotropic emission pattern for a wide range of angles. Our design is achieved by overlapping both the electric and magnetic resonances in the spectral domain and is insensitive to both TE and TM polarizations. The thermal emission of the metamaterial is nearly isotropic in which the deviation in the angular emissivity is within 10% up to an angle of 75 degrees at the resonating wavelength of 2.86 μm. Moreover, our metamaterial can be easily scaled to have different resonating wavelengths for efficient radiative cooling or thermal emission at different temperatures.
