This paper presents the design, fabrication, and electromagnetic testing of a frequency selective surface (FSS)-based novel hybrid nanocomposite absorber for enhanced electromagnetic absorption. The proposed hybrid absorber consists of an FSS pattern printed over a dielectric substrate backed by aluminum foil, which is integrated together with a customized dielectric nanocomposite sheet. The dielectric sheet comprises the conducting carbon black (CB) nanopowders embedded into the epoxy matrix. The fabricated nanocomposite sheet is first characterized for the effective complex permittivity using the free-space measurement technique, and the measured electromagnetic properties are then used for the design of a hybrid absorber. The proposed hybrid absorber having overall thickness of 2.6 mm shows enhanced −10-dB absorption bandwidth of 3.5 GHz, which is much higher than that of the FSS and CB nanocomposite samples measured individually. The proposed work provides an effective way to combine the absorption properties of FSS with that of a customized dielectric absorber sheet in order to design an efficient hybrid absorber having reduced thickness with enhanced absorption bandwidth for stealth technology and various strategic applications.

Design of Frequency Selective Surface-Based Hybrid Nanocomposite Absorber for Stealth Applications

The bandwidth–thickness tradeoff is fundamental to the design of thin absorbers based on frequency-selective surfaces (FSSs). In this letter, we challenge the common belief that adding a dielectric superstrate will enlarge the bandwidth at the cost of increased thickness. It is first demonstrated using lumped circuit considerations so that a wider relative operating bandwidth can be achieved with a thinner absorber including an impedance-matching cover. By adopting this dielectric superstrate, we further show on the basis of full-wave simulation that the highest bandwidth ratio (BWR) at 10 dB absorption can be increased from 1:3.54 to 1:6.94, with the normalized thickness being reduced from 0.0920 to 0.0906 $\lambda _L$ (including superstrate). Restricted by readily available materials, an experimentally validated design obtains a BWR of approximately 1:5.32 at 10 dB absorption for a figure of merit of 88.26%. This performance is superior to existing designs with more complicated FSS patterns.

The Active Way of Tunable Frequency Selective Surfaces

The design of a frequency selective surface (FSS) screen constructed using a coupling configuration to implement a broadband microwave absorber is presented in this paper. The reflectivity representation recognizes the characterization of the absorber. Simulation and measurement results are presented and analyzed. A coupling FSS screen is introduced in order to obtain a better bandwidth and absorption. The bandwidth with the reflectivity below -10dB could get 5.45-18GHz, compared with the 6.28-18GHz of the absorber with square patches FSS, provided that the thickness of the absorber is 4mm.
