Abstract Microalgae are rich sources of astaxanthin well recognized for their potent bioactivities such as antioxidant, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory activities. Recent interests focused on the bioactivities of microalgae-derived astaxanthin on treating or preventing cancers mediated by their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This is due to the special structural configuration of microalgae-derived astaxanthin in terms of unsaturation (conjugated double bonds), stereochemical isomerism (3S,3’S optical isomer) and esterification (monoester), which display more potent bioactivities, compared with those from the other natural sources such as yeasts and higher plants, as well as synthetic astaxanthin. This review focuses on the recent advances on the bioactivities of microalgae-derived astaxanthin in association with cancers and immune diseases, with emphasis on their potential applications as natural antioxidants. Various well-developed biotechnological approaches for inducing astaxanthin production from microalgal culture, along with the proven and emerging industrial technologies to commercialize astaxanthin products in a large-scale manner, are also critically reviewed. These would facilitate the manufacture of bioactive microalgae-derived astaxanthin products to be applied in the food and pharmaceutical industries as salutary nutraceuticals.

Water transport through membranes is an attractive topic among the research dedicated to dehydration processes, microenvironment regulation, or more simply, recovery of freshwater. Herein, an atomistic computer simulation is proposed to provide new insights about a water vapor transport mechanism through PEBAX membranes filled with ionic liquid (IL) [C12C1im]Cl. Starting from experimental evidence that indicates an effective increase in water permeation as the IL is added to the polymer matrix (e.g., up to 85·10−3 (g·m)/(m2·day) at 318.15 K for PEBAX@2533 membranes loaded with 70% of IL), molecular dynamics simulations are proposed to explore the key role of IL in water transport inside membranes. The polar region composed of anions and cationic head groups of the IL is demonstrated to serve as the pathway for water transport through the membrane. Water molecules always stay near the pathway, which becomes wider and thus has a larger water-accessible area with increasing IL concentration. Hence, the diffusion coefficients of water molecules and ions increase as the IL concentration increases. The simulation provides useful indications about a microscopic mechanism that regulates the transport of water vapor through a kind of PEBAX/IL membrane, resulting in full agreement with the experimental evidence.

Abstract Here, we report the results of qualitative and quantitative investigations of the first-order phase transition in the ionic liquid 1-ethylpyridinium triflate exhibiting a high variability of temperature ranges, within which the freezing and melting occur. By two methods, the direct fast quenching/annealing and the slow temperature-controlled differential scanning calorimeter, it is revealed that despite the almost constant absolute enthalpies of phase transition, the freezing occurs faster with the larger temperature contrast (cooling rate) between the initially hotter sample and the colder surrounding. This feature is a clear exhibition of the Mpemba effect. The regularity in the change of the melting point is analyzed as well.

The Curious Case of 1-Ethylpyridinium Triflate: Ionic Liquid Exhibiting the Mpemba Effect

Ionic liquids (ILs), also known as room-temperature molten salts, are solely composed of ions with melting points usually below 100 °C. Because of their low volatility and vast amounts of species, ILs can serve as ‘green solvents’ and ‘designer solvents’ to meet the requirements of various applications by fine-tuning their molecular structures. A good understanding of the phase behaviors of ILs is certainly fundamentally important in terms of their wide applications. This review intends to summarize the major conclusions so far drawn on phase behaviors of ILs by computational, theoretical, and experimental studies, illustrating the intrinsic relationship between their dual ionic and organic nature and the crystalline phases, nanoscale segregation liquid phase, IL crystal phases, as well as phase behaviors of their mixture with small organic molecules.
