This article presents the photonic crystal fiber (PCF) based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor for early detection of malaria disease in humans by measurement of the variation of red blood cells (RBCs). In the proposed PCF, two layers of air holes are arranged in a hexagonal lattice structure and a thin film of gold-coating is used over PCF for the occurrence of SPR phenomena. It occurs when surface plasmon polariton (SPP)-mode coupled with the core-mode during phase-matching conditions. Malaria infected RBCs samples are filled into the PCF, which have own refractive index (RI) that shift the SPR resonance wavelength during confinement loss measurement. The resonance wavelength of malaria-infected RBCs samples is different from their normal RBCs samples due to the difference in RI of infected and normal RBCs samples. The proposed work is helpful in the detection of different stages of malaria-infected RBCs such as ring phase, trophozoite phase and Schizont phase by measuring the shift in resonance wavelength. The calculated wavelength sensitivities of the proposed sensor for the ring phase, trophozoite phase and Schizont phase RBCs are 13714.29 nm/RIU, 9789.47 nm/RIU, and 8068.97 nm/RIU, respectively in x-polarized direction and 14285.71 nm/RIU, 10000 nm/RIU, and 8206.9 nm/RIU, respectively in y-polarized direction with the maximum detection limit of 0.029. The proposed PCF-based SPR biosensor is suitable for the early diagnosis of malaria disease due to its enhanced sensing performance (low detection limit and high sensitivity).

A Review of advancements (2007–2017) in plasmonics-based optical fiber sensors

We propose and numerically characterize the optical characteristics of a novel photonic crystal fiber (PCF) based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor in the visible to near infrared (500-2000 nm) region for refractive index (RI) sensing. The finite element method (FEM) is used to design and study the influence of different geometric parameters on the sensing performance of the sensor. The chemically stable plasmonic material gold (Au) is used to produce excitation between the core and plasmonic mode. On a pure silica (SiO2) substrate, a rectangular structured core is used to facilitate the coupling strength between the core and the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode and thus improves the sensing performance. By tuning the geometric parameters, simulation results show a maximum wavelength sensitivity of 58000 nm/RIU (Refractive Index Unit) for the x polarization and 62000 nm/RIU for the y polarization for analyte refractive indices ranging from 1.33 to 1.43. Moreover, we characterize the amplitude sensitivity of the sensor that shows a maximum sensitivity of 1415 RIU-1 and 1293 RIU-1 for the x and y polarizations, respectively. To our knowledge, this is the highest sensitivity for an SPR in published literature, and facilitates future development of sensors for accurate and precise analyte measurement. The sensor also attains a maximum figure of merit (FOM) of 1140 and fine RI resolution of 1.6 × 10-6. Owing to strong coupling strength, high sensitivity, high FOM and improved sensing resolution, the proposed sensor is suited for real-time, inexpensive and accurate detection of biomedical and biological analytes, biomolecules, and organic chemicals.

An Ag-graphene layers-coated H-shaped photonic crystal fiber (PCF) surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor with a U-shaped grooves open structure for refractive index (RI) sensing is proposed and numerically simulated by the finite element method (FEM). The designed sensor could solve the problems of air-holes material coating and analyte filling in PCF. Two big air-holes in the x-axis produce a birefringence phenomenon leading to the confinement loss and sensitivity of x-polarized light being much stronger than y-polarized. Graphene is deposited on the layer of silver in the grooves; its high surface to volume ratio and rich π conjugation make it a suitable dielectric layer for sensing. The effect of structure parameters such as air-holes size, U-shaped grooves depth, thickness of the silver layer and number of graphene layers on the sensing performance of the proposed sensor are numerical simulated. A large analyte RI range from 1.33 to 1.41 is calculated and the highest wavelength sensitivity is 12,600 nm/RIU. In the linear RI sensing region of 1.33 to 1.36; the average wavelength sensitivity we obtained can reach 2770 nm/RIU with a resolution of 3.61 × 10-5 RIU. This work provides a reference for developing a high-sensitivity; multi-parameter measurement sensor potentially useful for water pollution monitoring and biosensing in the future.

A Refractive Index Sensor Based on H-Shaped Photonic Crystal Fibers Coated with Ag-Graphene Layers.

We propose a D-shaped photonic crystal fiber (PCF) refractive index sensor with ultrahigh sensitivity and a wide detection range. The gold layer is deposited on the polished surface, avoiding filling or coating inside the air holes of the PCF. The influences of the gold layer thickness and the diameter of the larger air holes are investigated. The sensing characteristics of the proposed sensor are analyzed by the finite element method. The maximum sensitivity can reach 31,000  nm/RIU, and the refractive index detection range is from 1.32 to 1.40. Our proposed PCF has excellent sensing characteristics and is competitive in sensing devices.

Ultrahigh sensitivity refractive index sensor of a D-shaped PCF based on surface plasmon resonance.

This paper describes simulation and experimental methods for designing a D-shaped surface plasmon resonance (SPR) fibre sensor. The sensor consists of two set-up approaches. Finite element method is used in simulation on the fibre sensor device. Two experimental methods for detecting relative intensity are used by varying the wavelength of the optical signal sources and the thickness of gold layer coated on the D-shaped fibre. In the first method, the sensor device works by detecting the relative intensity of two optical signal sources having different wavelengths. In the second set-up, the relative intensity between two D-shaped fibres coated with different thicknesses of gold is measured when a single signal source is launched at the input. The difference in intensities of the signal outputs is used to estimate the refractive index at the sensing region. A prototype SPR D-shaped fibre sensor has been fabricated and the experimental results show good agreement with simulation.
