Optimization of Power System Performance Using Facts Devices

In this paper a new, an enhanced PSO based optimization is proposed for optimizing the power system losses and voltage profiles. Recently, the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique has been applied to solve power engineering optimization problems giving better results than classical methods. This paper shows the application of Enhanced PSO for optimal sizing and allocation of a Static Compensator (STATCOM) in a power system. This algorithm finds optimal settings for present infrastructure as well as optimal locations, sizes and control Settings forsettings for STATCOM units. A 30 bus system is used as an example to illustrate the technique. The result shows that the EPSO is able to find the best solution with statistical significance and a high degree of convergence. The simulation results are presented to show a significant improvement of the power system reliability and feasibility and potential of this new approach.

Optimal location of FACTS devices using enhanced particle swarm optimization

This paper has been presented the taxonomical review on enhancement of power system performances by Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) controllers planning in distribution systems by using different optimization techniques. The FACTS controllers planning in distribution systems are mainly used for enhancement of different system performances such as real (RLP) and reactive power (REP) losses of the system, system oscillations, system stability, system security, system reliability and system power factor in distribution systems. This survey article very much useful for researchers and scientific persons for future work carried out.

Enhancement of Power System Performances by Optimally Placed FACTS Controllers by using Different Optimization Techniques in Distribution Systems: A Taxonomical Review

The power demand is increasing continuously day by day. The real time power system parameters are continuously changing due to varying loading conditions, internal and external disturbances. The low frequency oscillations (LFO) are a major concern in modern stressed power system. In case if low frequency oscillations are not damped effectively, it may leads to failure of system stability and also deteriorate the power system performance. To balance the outcome of system parameters and loading uncertainties on the power system performance, robust shunt flexible AC transmission system controllers (FACTs) have been widely explored by modern power system practitioners. These controllers are able to effectively damp out the low frequency oscillations, enhance the power system stability and power flow control through the existing transmission lines. Different types of robust shunt FACTs technologies including real world installations and utility experiences have been reviewed by this paper. The comprehensive literature review show the remarkable capability of shunt FACTS controllers to get better dynamic stability voltage control and power transfer capability in the face of uncertainties present in the power system.

Robust control of power system using shunt FACTS controllers

A FACTS device with power system stabilizer's controllers is introduced to enhance power system characteristics, gain damping performance by considering the optimal type and allocating of FACTS with a method to approach to the solution via the proposed microgenetic algorithm (/spl mu/GA) combined neighboring search using the eigenvalues analysis determined through a multiobjective function. A simplified FACTS device general model based on power command injection concept with the demonstrating four type definitions is provided. Controllers are designed as decentralized control with power flow input lead-lag control scheme. Demonstrations are performed on a single machine infinite bus to validate the operation of FACTS model by the results. Then, the implementation on a three-machine nine-bus power system is approached the optimal control for each point operation. The simulations reveal the results from simultaneous approach with the proposed method compared to the preliminary approach results with /spl mu/GA to fixed type-location. The optimal type and placement of a FACTS device can be obtained by using the proposed approach, nonlinear time domain simulation confirms the significant improvement of power system stability.
