The transfer of neutrons onto 24Ne has been measured using a reaccelerated radioactive beam of 24Ne to study the (d,p) reaction in inverse kinematics. The unusual raising of the first 3/2+ level in 25Ne and its significance in terms of the migration of the neutron magic number from N=20 to N=16 is put on a firm footing by confirmation of this state's identity. The raised 3/2+ level is observed simultaneously with the intruder negative parity 7/2- and 3/2- levels, providing evidence for the reduction in the N=20 gap. The coincident gamma-ray decays allowed the assignment of spins as well as the transferred orbital angular momentum. The excitation energy of the 3/2+ state shows that the established USD shell model breaks down well within the sd model space and requires a revised treatment of the proton-neutron monopole interaction.

Migration of Nuclear Shell Gaps Studied in the d(Ne-24, p gamma)Ne-25 Reaction

The data set of the direct reactions induced by the radioactive nuclei 6, 8He can be used as benchmarks to test the validity of the microscopic structure theories. The reactions were analyzed and compared to microscopic calculations including various structure inputs. The interpretation for the structure of He isotopes is compared to the ones proposed via other probes. The consistency of the various data sets and of the reaction analysis using structure models is discussed. The root mean square radii of the matter and neutron densities, and the multipole moments M
 p, n
 and B(E2) values are extracted in our approach and compared to the previous experiments and to the theories. From this comparison, we can discuss and point out the microscopic inputs of the models (like correlations, continuum-coupling effects), which are required to reach a consistent understanding for both the radii and the spectroscopy of the nuclei close to the drip-line.

Experimental study of intruder components in light neutron-rich nuclei via single-nucleon transfer reaction

The SPIRAL facility at GANIL, operational since 2001, is described briefly. The diverse physics program using the re-accelerated (1.2–25 MeV/u) beams ranging from He to Kr and the instrumentation specially developed for their exploitation are presented. Results of these studies, using both direct and compound processes, addressing various questions related to the existence of exotic states of nuclear matter, evolution of new 'magic numbers', tunnelling of exotic nuclei, neutron correlations, exotic pathways in astrophysical sites and characterization of the continuum, are discussed. The future prospects for the facility and the path towards SPIRAL2, a next generation ISOL facility, are also briefly presented.

Nuclear structure and reaction studies at SPIRAL

Pulse shape analysis for light particles (
 $Z \leq 2$
 ) is studied in a 500 μm thick Double-Sided Stripped Silicon Detector (DSSSD) of nTD type with a pitch lower than 500 μm. Good separation between the $Z = 1$
 isotopes is achieved irrespective of the side used for signal pick up with the detector biased at depletion voltage. The low energy threshold for discrimination between $Z = 1$
 isotopes is found to be around 2.5 MeV at depletion voltage and the quality of the separation can be slightly improved by using filtering methods. On the other hand, the discrimination performances are enhanced when lowering the bias of the detector at the expense of energy resolution. At nominal bias (i.e. overdepletion) where the energy resolution is the best, no separation between the three hydrogen isotopes is achieved when using the amplitude of the current signal. Discrimination can still be obtained by acquiring the time over a threshold set at 10% of the amplitude after applying a square bipolar filter to the current signal. Besides, in view of the design of the front-end electronics, the effect of the sampling rate needed for pulse shape analysis has been investigated and shows that below 200 MSa/s, the discrimination quality is strongly reduced.

Characterization of light particles (Z ≤ 2) discrimination performances by pulse shape analysis techniques with high-granularity silicon detector

A compact, quasi-4π position sensitive silicon array, TIARA, designed to study direct reactions induced by radioactive beams in inverse kinematics is described here. The Transfer and Inelastic All-angle Reaction Array (TIARA) consists of 8 resistive charge division detectors forming an octagonal barrel around the target and a set of double-sided silicon-strip annular detectors positioned at each end of the barrel. The detector was coupled to the γ-ray array EXOGAM and the spectrometer VAMOS at the GANIL Laboratory to demonstrate the potential of such an apparatus with radioactive beams. The reaction, well known in direct kinematics, has been carried out in inverse kinematics for that purpose. The observation of the ground state and excited states at 7.16 and 7.86 MeV is presented here as well as the comparison of the measured proton angular distributions with DWBA calculations. Transferred l-values are in very good agreement with both theoretical calculations and previous experimental results obtained in direct kinematics.
