ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is studying the physics of strongly interacting matter, and in particular the properties of the Quark–Gluon Plasma (QGP), using proton–proton, proton–nucleus and nucleus–nucleus collisions at the CERN LHC (Large Hadron Collider). The ALICE Collaboration is preparing a major upgrade of the experimental apparatus, planned for installation in the second long LHC shutdown in the years 2018–2019. These plans are presented in the ALICE Upgrade Letter of Intent, submitted to the LHCC (LHC experiments Committee) in September 2012. In order to fully exploit the physics reach of the LHC in this field, high-precision measurements of the heavy-flavour production, quarkonia, direct real and virtual photons, and jets are necessary. This will be achieved by an increase of the LHC Pb–Pb instant luminosity up to 6×1027 cm−2s−1 and running the ALICE detector with the continuous readout at the 50 kHz event rate. The physics performance accessible with the upgraded detector, together with the main detector modifications, are presented.

Upgrade of the ALICE Experiment Letter Of Intent

In the upcoming LHC Run 3, starting in 2021, the upgraded Time Projection Chamber (TPC) of the ALICE experiment will record minimum bias Pb-Pb collisions in a continuous readout mode at an interaction rate up to 50 kHz. This corresponds to typically 4-5 overlapping collisions during the electron drift time in the detector. Despite careful tuning of the new quadruple GEM-based readout chambers, which fulfill the design requirement of an ion backflow below 1%, these conditions will lead to space-charge distortions of several centimeters that fluctuate in time. They will be corrected via a calibration procedure that uses the information of the Inner Tracking System (ITS), which is located inside, and the Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) and Time-Of-Flight system (TOF), located around the TPC, respectively. By using such a procedure the intrinsic track resolution of the TPC of a few hundred micrometers can be restored. 
The required online tracking algorithm for the TRD, which is based on a Kalman filter, is presented. The procedure matches extrapolated ITS-TPC tracks to TRD space-points utilizing GPUs. Subsequently these global tracks are refitted neglecting the TPC information. The residuals of the TPC clusters to the interpolation of the refitted tracks are used to create a map of space-charge distortions. Regular updates of the map compensate for changes in the TPC conditions. The map is applied in the final reconstruction of the data. First performance results of the tracking algorithm will be shown.

The FairRoot framework is an object oriented simulation, reconstruction and data analysis framework based on ROOT. It includes core services for detector simulation and offline analysis. The framework delivers base classes which enable the users to easily construct their experimental setup in a fast and convenient way. By using the Virtual Monte Carlo concept it is possible to perform the simulations using either Geant3 or Geant4 without changing the user code or the geometry description. Using and extending the task mechanism of ROOT it is possible to implement complex analysis tasks in a convenient way. Moreover, using the FairCuda interface of the framework it is possible to run some of these tasks also on GPU. Data IO, as well as parameter handling and data base connections are also handled by the framework. Since some of the experiments will not have an experimental setup with a conventional trigger system, the framework can handle also free flowing input streams of detector data. For this mode of operation the framework provides classes to create the needed time sorted input streams of detector data out of the event based simulation data. There are also tools to do radiation studies and to visualize the simulated data. A CMake-CDash based building and monitoring system is also part of the FairRoot services which helps to build and test the framework on many different platforms in an automatic way, including also Continuous Integration.

The FairRoot framework

The results of simulations for future measurements of electromagnetic form factors at \PANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported. The statistical precision at which the proton form factors can be determined is estimated. The signal channel $\bar p p \to e^+ e^-$ is studied on the basis of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main background channel, i.e. the $\bar p p \to \pi^+ \pi^-$, is studied. Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistic and systematic uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated using to the two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam condition and detector performances.

The P ¯ ANDA fixed target experiment planned at FAIR will investigate fundamental questions of non-perturbative QCD. It makes use of a cooled antiproton beam (momentum: 1.5 to 15 GeV / c ) and will reach luminosities of up to 2 ⋅ 10 32 cm − 2 s − 1 , yielding a p ¯ p -annihilation rate of 2 ⋅ 10 7 s − 1 . One option for the central tracker of P ¯ ANDA is a cylindrical, ungated , continuously running TPC with GEM-based gas amplification stage.
