Review of hybrid composites fatigue

An experimental study on the residual strength behaviour of a Carbon Fibre Reinforced Metal Laminate (FRML) was conducted. Mechanical tests were carried out to determine the laminate tensile property profiles and residual strength of notched coupon laminates. The effect of notch geometry was studied for both centre cracks and centre circular holes with notch sizes ranging from 10 to 40 mm. The reduction in residual strength for the saw-cut specimens was greater than that for the circular hole specimens. C-scan and optical microscopy associated with a chemical etching technique were used to investigate progressive damage and failure mechanisms in these laminates. Damage modes such as delamination, crack growth and fibre breakage were observed. Progressive Damage and Residual Strength of a Carbon Fibre Reinforced Metal Laminate

In this paper we describe the use of an inexpensive standard communication-grade optical fiber for the purpose of detecting damage in glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite materials and hybrid fiber metal laminates based on the same composite constituent. These multi-mode, step-index optical fibers were embedded at different locations within the composite structure to assess their ability for structural health monitoring. In this study, the specimens were loaded under a three-point bend test configuration, Results from the investigation have shown that these optical fibers are capable of detecting the peak failure load in the host material when embedded at locations where structural failure initiates at peak load. The output from the optical fibers was shown to be sensitive to the applied loading conditions suggesting that they can also be used to monitor structural loading. Optical micrographs of selected specimens were obtained by sectioning the specimens at the fracture location to provide confirmation of the optical fiber results.

Influence of curing process on microstructure and bending strength of 2D-T700/E44 composites

The response of the aramid reinforced aluminum-epoxy-laminate to uniaxial and biaxial fatigue loading has been investigated. The fracture process in the laminates propagates mainly in the form of cracks in aluminum layers, delaminations between the resin-rich and fiber-rich prepreg layers, splitting in prepreg layers and fiber fracture. Ultrasonic microscopy has been used to evaluate the shape and size of the damage zone. The ultrasonic images have been calibrated by means of SEM optical microscopy of the laminates with sequential removal of the layers. Microscopic eliminaton reveals a direct correlation between delimination, fiber fracture, and fatigue crack growth in the aluminum layer. The results of this investigation strongly suggest that the laminate resistance to tension-tension biaxial fatigue is superior to that under uniaxial loading conditions
