Inorganic random networks composed of silicon, boron, nitrogen, and carbon constitute a novel class of ceramics with outstanding durability at elevated temperatures. The only approach known to their synthesis is the pyrolysis of appropriate pre-ceramic polymers, which on their part are either accessible via co-condensation of different molecular species, or by polycondensation of single source precursors exhibiting structural features that are desired to be present in the final ceramics. In this report the different synthetic routes known to date have been compiled and critically assessed. Although the reliable knowledge of this rather young class of materials is still limited, their fundamental features with respect to structures and performance have already began to shine through. The range of their properties — mainly depending on the synthetic route, but to some extent also on the composition — is quite considerable. The upper limits for thermal loads with respect to the onset of weight loss (decomposition) in an inert atmosphere, to the onset of crystallization and phase separation, and to the resistance to oxidation in air, seem to be ∼2000 °C, ∼1900 °C, and ∼1500 °C, respectively. Some representatives show unique combinations of properties, relevant for an application at high temperatures, which clearly surpass those of SiC or Si3N4. For instance, fibers made of SiBN3C, derived from the single source precursor Cl3Si(NH)BCl2, keeps its high mechanical durability, as measured by creep resistance and tensile strength, up to temperatures of ∼1400 °C.

Amorphous Multinary Ceramics in the Si-B-N-C System

To improve the performance of SiC fiber-reinforced SiC matrix composite (SiC/SiC composite), a polymer impregnation and pyrolysis process (PIP process) has been developed by incorporating an inert filler with polyvinylsilane. Composites consolidated with slurries of various filler contents were thoroughly examined at each repetition of the PIP process. The fiber volume fraction and matrix microstructure in the composites were determined during consolidation as a function of the filler content. Densification behavior during multiple PIP processing was much dependent on the microstructure formed in consolidation. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the effect of filler content on the microstructure of the matrix and of the fiber/matrix interface. In addition, the relationships between the microstructure and the mechanical properties were evaluated from a fundamental viewpoint.

Development of SiC/SiC composites by PIP in combination with RS

The temperature dependence of tensile fracture behavior and tensile strength of a two-dimensional woven BN-coated Hi-Nicalon™ SiC fiber-reinforced SiC matrix composite fabricated by polymer infiltration pyrolysis (PIP) were studied. A tensile test of the composite was conducted in air at temperatures of 298 (room temperature), 1200, 1400, and 1600 K. The composite showed a nonlinear behavior for all the test temperatures; however, a large decrease in tensile strength was observed above 1200 K. Young's modulus was estimated from the initial linear regime of the tensile stress–strain curves at room and elevated temperatures, and a decrease in Young’s modulus became significant above 1200 K. The multiple transverse cracking that occurred was independent of temperature, and the transverse crack density was measured from fractographic observations of the tested specimens at room and elevated temperatures. The temperature dependence of the effective interfacial shear stress was estimated from the measurements of the transverse crack density. The temperature dependence of in situ fiber strength properties was determined from fracture mirror size on the fracture surfaces of fibers. The decrease in the tensile strength of the composite up to 1400 K was attributed to the degradation in the strength properties of in situ fibers, and to the damage behavior exception of the fiber properties for 1600 K.

Temperature Dependence of Tensile Strength for a Woven Boron-Nitride-Coated Hi-Nicalon™ SiC Fiber-Reinforced Silicon-Carbide-Matrix Composite

The effect of surface-modified SiTiCO (Tyranno®) fiber on the tensile behavior of SiC-matrix minicomposites has been examined. Standard SiTiCO fiber and two kinds of surface-modified fibers were used and the composites were fabricated by a polymer infiltration pyrolysis process. The strengths of the surface-modified-fiber-reinforced minicomposites were significantly improved compared to that of the standard fiber minicomposite. The scattering of tensile strength also decreased with the use of surface-modified fibers. The results demonstrate the achievement of SiTiCO-fiber-reinforced SiC-matrix composite by modifying the surface chemistry of the fiber.

Effect of Pip Cycles on Fracture Behaviour in Unidirectional SiC Fibre-Reinforced SiC Matrix Composite:

The impact failure behaviors of unidirectionally oriented continuous SiC fiber (NICALONR)-reinforced aluminum, whose volume fraction was 0.5, have been investigated by a instrumented charpy impact testing machine. The impact energy was ranged from 25 to 150 J which corresponded impact velocity ranged from 1.4 to 3.5 m/s. The result showed that the maximum impact load of the composite decreased with increasing impact energy. On the other hand, the total absorved energy which was due to energy consumption mechanisms after the maximum load increased with increasing impact energy.
