Status of neutrino oscillations 2018: 3σ hint for normal mass ordering and improved CP sensitivity

We present an updated global fit of neutrino oscillation data in the simplest three-neutrino framework In the present study we include up-to-date analyses from a number of experiments Concerning the atmospheric and solar sectors, besides the data considered previously, we give updated analyses of IceCube DeepCore and Sudbury Neutrino Observatory data, respectively We have also included the latest electron antineutrino data collected by the Daya Bay and RENO reactor experiments, and the long-baseline T2K and NOνA measurements, as reported in the Neutrino 2020 conference All in all, these new analyses result in more accurate measurements of θ13, θ12, $$ \Delta {m}_{21}^2 $$
 and $$ \left|\Delta {m}_{31}^2\right| $$
  The best fit value for the atmospheric angle θ23 lies in the second octant, but first octant solutions remain allowed at ∼ 24σ Regarding CP violation measurements, the preferred value of δ we obtain is 108π (158π) for normal (inverted) neutrino mass ordering The global analysis still prefers normal neutrino mass ordering with 25σ statistical significance This preference is milder than the one found in previous global analyses These new results should be regarded as robust due to the agreement found between our Bayesian and frequentist approaches Taking into account only oscillation data, there is a weak/moderate preference for the normal neutrino mass ordering of 200σ While adding neutrinoless double beta decay from the latest Gerda, CUORE and KamLAND-Zen results barely modifies this picture, cosmological measurements raise the preference to 268σ within a conservative approach A more aggressive data set combination of cosmological observations leads to a similar preference for normal with respect to inverted mass ordering, namely 270σ This very same cosmological data set provides 2σ upper limits on the total neutrino mass corresponding to Σmν < 012 (015) eV in the normal (inverted) neutrino mass ordering scenario The bounds on the neutrino mixing parameters and masses presented in this up-to-date global fit analysis include all currently available neutrino physics inputs

2020 global reassessment of the neutrino oscillation picture

An experiment to search for light sterile neutrinos is conducted at a reactor with a thermal power of 2.8 GW located at the Hanbit nuclear power complex. The search is done with a detector consisting of a ton of Gd-loaded liquid scintillator in a tendon gallery approximately 24 m from the reactor core. The measured antineutrino event rate is 1976 per day with a signal to background ratio of about 22. The shape of the antineutrino energy spectrum obtained from the eight-month data-taking period is compared with a hypothesis of oscillations due to active-sterile antineutrino mixing. No strong evidence of $3+1$ neutrino oscillation is found. An excess around the 5 MeV prompt energy range is observed as seen in existing longer-baseline experiments. The mixing parameter ${\mathrm{sin}}^{2}2{\ensuremath{\theta}}_{14}$ is limited up to less than 0.1 for $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}{m}_{41}^{2}$ ranging from 0.2 to $2.3\text{ }{\mathrm{eV}}^{2}$ with a 90% confidence level.

Sterile Neutrino Search at the NEOS Experiment.

Current neutrino experiments are measuring the neutrino mixing parameters with an unprecedented accuracy. The upcoming generation of neutrino experiments will be sensitive to subdominant oscillation effects that can give information on the yet-unknown neutrino parameters: the Dirac CP-violating phase, the mass ordering and the octant of $\theta_{23}$. Determining the exact values of neutrino mass and mixing parameters is crucial to test neutrino models and flavor symmetries designed to predict these neutrino parameters. In the first part of this review, we summarize the current status of the neutrino oscillation parameter determination. We consider the most recent data from all solar experiments and the atmospheric data from Super-Kamiokande, IceCube and ANTARES. We also implement the data from the reactor neutrino experiments KamLAND, Daya Bay, RENO and Double Chooz as well as the long baseline neutrino data from MINOS, T2K and NOvA. If in addition to the standard interactions, neutrinos have subdominant yet-unknown Non-Standard Interactions (NSI) with matter fields, extracting the values of these parameters will suffer from new degeneracies and ambiguities. We review such effects and formulate the conditions on the NSI parameters under which the precision measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters can be distorted. Like standard weak interactions, the non-standard interaction can be categorized into two groups: Charged Current (CC) NSI and Neutral Current (NC) NSI. Our focus will be mainly on neutral current NSI because it is possible to build a class of models that give rise to sizeable NC NSI with discernible effects on neutrino oscillation. These models are based on new $U(1)$ gauge symmetry with a gauge boson of mass $\lesssim 10$~MeV. The UV complete model should be of course electroweak invariant which in general implies that along with neutrinos, charged fermions also acquire new interactions on which there are strong bounds. We enumerate the bounds that already exist on the electroweak symmetric models and demonstrate that it is possible to build viable models avoiding all these bounds. In the end, we review methods to test these models and suggest approaches to break the degeneracies in deriving neutrino mass parameters caused by NSI.

Neutrino masses and mixings: Status of known and unknown 3ν parameters

The RENO experiment has analyzed about 500 live days of data to observe an energy dependent disappearance of reactor ν[over ¯]_{e} by comparing their prompt signal spectra measured in two identical near and far detectors In the period between August of 2011 and January of 2013, the far (near) detector observed 31 541 (290 775) electron antineutrino candidate events with a background fraction of 49% (28%) The measured prompt spectra show an excess of reactor ν[over ¯]_{e} around 5 MeV relative to the prediction from a most commonly used model A clear energy and baseline dependent disappearance of reactor ν[over ¯]_{e} is observed in the deficit of the observed number of ν[over ¯]_{e} Based on the measured far-to-near ratio of prompt spectra, we obtain sin^{2}2θ_{13}=0082±0009(stat)±0006(syst) and |Δm_{ee}^{2}|=[262_{-023}^{+021}(stat)_{-013}^{+012}(syst)]×10^{-3}  eV^{2}
