A system, method and computer program product is provided for interactive user navigation in a real-time 3D simulation. An assembly builder permits a user to build customized physics-based assemblies for user navigation in a variety of virtual environments. These assemblies are stored in a library and are then accessed by a navigation run-time module that runs in conjunction with, or as a part of, a visual run-time application. The navigation run-time module receives high-level user goal requests via a simple and intuitive user interface, converts them into a series of tasks, and then selects the appropriate assembly or assemblies to perform each task. As a result, complex navigation may be achieved. Once selected, an assembly provides a physics-based eye-point model for user navigation. Collisions between the assembly and objects in the simulation are resolved using a real-time physics engine, thus ensuring smooth, cinematic-style eye-point modeling in addition to real-time control.

System, method and computer program product for intuitive interactive navigation control in virtual environments

The number of mobile devices today already outnumbers the installed desktop PCs and this gap will further widen in the future since the market for desktop PCs is stagnating but is still growing for mobile devices. For example, the cellular phone is one of the most widespread devices that can display graphical content and its functionality is constantly increasing.

Even with the increased functionality on recent mobile devices bringing interactive graphics and visualization methods to these devices is not as easy as it might appear to be. Strategies and ideas that work for desktop machines cannot necessarily be transferred to mobile devices because they have very different characteristics. The purpose of this thesis is to exactly address this problem. 

The current limitations of these devices -- limited processing power, small amount of memory, low bandwidth, limited network capacities, small display area -- that hinder the usage of current visualization applications on these devices are identified. In order to overcome them, several different strategies are presented that allow interactive 3D graphic solutions to run on mobile devices. These strategies take advantage of different properties of a mobile device, e.g., network speed. Which strategy should be employed for a graphical application can be decided based on the properties of the device that suit best to the strategy. Moreover, algorithms for presenting data in a resource friendly, user recognizable form but at the same time taking account of the display limitations are introduced by addressing ideas in illustrative and artistic rendering. A special focus in this thesis is on the representation of transparency that plays a significant role in extending the usable space for visualizing information. In this thesis several strategies taken from artistic rendering have been successfully applied to the context of mobile rendering solutions. 
Additionally, a 3D graphical user interface was designed that is well suited to solve spatial problems in mobile devices and allows developers to build new classes of modern user interfaces.

All the new algorithms explained in this thesis do not only extend the capabilities of bringing interactive 3D graphics to mobile device, but can for example also be used for enhancing the richness of visualization or non-photorealistic rendering methods in any sort of interactive environment. 
Die Zahl der mobilen Gerate ubersteigt bereits heute die Anzahl der installierten Schreibtisch-PC-Gerate. Es ist zu erwarten, dass diese Kluft in der Zukunft weiter wachsen wird, da die Verkaufszahlen fur PC-Gerate momentan stagnieren, wahrend die von mobilen Geraten weiterhin zunehmen. Zum Beispiel kann man momentan das Mobiltelefon als das weitest verbreitete elektronische Gerat, mit dem es moglich ist, grafische Daten anzuzeigen, ansehen und seine Funktionalitat nimmt immer weiter zu. 

Doch trotz der gestiegenen Funktionalitat auf den mobilen Geraten ist es nicht so einfach, interaktive Grafik- und Visualisierungsmethoden fur diese Gerattypen zu entwickeln, wie es auf den ersten Blick scheint. 
Strategien, die auf einem Schreibtischgerat gut funktionieren, sind nicht ohne weiteres auf mobile Gerate ubertragbar. Der Grund dafur sind spezifische Eigenschaften der mobilen Gerate. Das Ziel dieser Dissertation ist es genau dieses Problem anzugehen.

Die momentanen Beschrankungen von mobilen Geraten (eingeschrankte Rechenkapazitat, niedriges Speichervolumen, niedrige Speicherbandbreite, geringe 
Netzwerkkapazitaten, kleine physikalische Darstellungsflache), die den Einsatz von Visualisierungsapplikationen verhindern, werden zunachst identifiziert. Um diese Beschrankungen zu umgehen, werden verschiedene Strategien vorgestellt, die interaktive 3D Grafiklosungen auf mobilen Geraten ermoglichen. Diese Strategien nutzen dabei verschiedene Eigenschaften eines bestimmten Gerats, z.B. Netzwerkkapazitaten. Welche dieser Strategien sich fur eine Grafikapplikation anbieten, hangt von diesen Eigenschaften ab.Weiterhin werden Algorithmen vorgestellt, die es ermoglichen Daten in einer ressourcenfreundlichen und vom Benutzer erkennbaren Form darzustellen, zur gleichen Zeit aber auch die eingeschrankten physikalischen Darstellungsmoglichkeiten des mobilen Gerats berucksichtigen. Dabei wird hauptsachlich auf Techniken aus dem kunstlerischen und nicht-photorealistischen Bereich zuruckgegriffen. Einen speziellen Fokus diese Arbeit liegt auf der Darstellung von Transparenz. Diese kann unter anderem verwendet werden, um die raumliche Darstellungsflache zu vergrossern. 

Zum Abschluss der Arbeit wird eine 3D grafische Benutzeroberflache fur mobile Gerate vorgestellt, die besonders geeignet ist, die raumliche Einschrankung, die durch die kleine Darstellungsflache auf diesen Geraten besteht, zu erweitern.

Alle in dieser Dissertation vorgestellten neuen Algorithmen erweitern das Spektrum von mobilen Geraten, interaktive 3D Grafik darzustellen. Auserdem konnen sie ebenfalls eingesetzt werden, um die Reichhaltigkeit von Visualisierungsmethoden durch die vorgestellten nicht-photorealistischen 
Darstellungstechniken zu erweitern.

Interactive visualization methods for mobile device applications

The Internet has become a major sales platform, assuming an emergent importance in increasing the economic growth of businesses. Web 2.0 has been a very important change in the way people use the internet and it has created an impact in all sectors of society. This study emphasises the importance of including Web 2.0 tools in online retailing as a contribution for success. The focus of this research lies in Portuguese online retailers and the elaboration of an adoption model for Web 2.0 tools. Through an observation of the 36 most visited Portuguese e-Commerce websites, it was possible to gather information on their adoption patterns of these tools. Social networks, Rich Internet Applications, mashups and Really Simple Syndication were the most popular tools, while semantic search, wikis and blogs were the least implemented. These and other aspects were gathered and then used to build a Web 2.0 adoption model.

In the open hardware graphics accelerator (ORGFX), there are rectangle, line, triangle and curve rasterization modules. This paper is only focused on the improvement of line rasterization speed. Besides modifying the algorithm itself, hardware implementation and resource consumption are put into consideration here. Originally, ORGFX uses the classic Bresenham line algorithm with high precision and simple logic to rasterize lines, but this algorithm can only generate one pixel in each rasterization process, which results in efficiency relatively low. New algorithm in this paper combines Bresenham algorithm with the symmetry nature of lines, advantages of Bresenham algorithm are kept and rasterization speed is improved in this way. The results of experiments show that nearly 50 percent of time can be saved through software implementation and hardware implementation.

Modified line algorithm based on ORGFX

We gathered more than a thousand different programs from various computer graphics applications on the Internet. We checked program source code one by one and compiled the statistical distributions of line lengths and orientations of the line drawing programs. This article presents our data collection methods, lists the statistical data in detail, and discusses analytical results. We believe that our work will help researchers better understand the properties of line drawing in real applications and improve line scan-conversion methods. Detailed, accurate knowledge of the drawing environment in which an interface or functional capability will be used is the best basis for comparing algorithms or making design decisions about hardware graphics accelerator interfaces and software device driver interfaces.

The analysis and statistics of line distribution

Mobile computing devices, such as tablets, smartphones, PDAs, and game remote controllers, become very popular in our daily life. This article discusses how to turn these devices, more specifically smartphones and Nintendo Wii remotes (in short as Wiimote), into computer remote controllers. In the smartphone-based system, a smartphone is extended to be the computerâ€™s wireless keyboard and mouse. The smartphone and the computer talk to each other through either wireless Ad Hoc or Wi-Fi access point network. In the Wiimote-based system, a Wiimote is turned into computerâ€™s mouse, where the user moves the mouse cursor by waving the Wiimote in air, and generates mouse events through Wiimote buttons. The Wiimote communicates with the computer through Bluetooth. These systems can be used in conference rooms, classrooms, project seminar rooms, and even peopleâ€™s living rooms, where a projector screen or a big-screen TV serves as the computer monitor.
