A capture system captures detectable attributes of a user. A differential system compares the detectable attributes with a normalized model of attributes, wherein the normalized model of attributes characterize normal representative attribute values across a sample of a plurality of users and generates differential attributes representing the differences between the detectable attributes and the normalized model of attributes. Multiple separate avatar creator systems receive the differential attributes and each apply the differential attributes to different base avatars to create custom avatars which reflect a selection of the detectable attributes of the user which are distinguishable from the normalized model of attributes.

Creating a customized avatar that reflects a user's distinguishable attributes

In this paper we present a framework for immersive virtual environment intended for remote collaboration and training of physical activities. Our multi-camera system performs full-body 3D reconstruction of human user(s) in real time and renders their image in the virtual space allowing remote users to interact. The paper features a short overview of the technology used for the capturing and reconstruction. Some of the applications where we have successfully demonstrated use of the system in combination with the tele-immersive virtual environment are described. Finally, we address current drawbacks with regard to data capturing and networking and provide some ideas for future work.

Immersive 3D Environment for Remote Collaboration and Training of Physical Activities

The multidimensional nature of many types of data in modern geography calls for creative and innovative approaches to their analysis. Statisticians have recently developed methods for exploring and visualizing large, multivariate datasets, but cartographers and geographers in general have only recently begun to integrate these methods for use with spatial and spatiotemporal datasets that are multivariate in character. This article will present an example of such an integration—an environment for visualization of health statistics—as a case study to demonstrate the philosophical and practical advantages of geovisualization systems for the exploration of complex spatiotemporal information. Design and Usability of an Enhanced Geographic Information System for Exploration of Multivariate Health Statistics

Teleimmersion is an emerging technology that enables users to collaborate remotely by generating realistic 3D avatars in real time and rendering them inside a shared virtual space. The teleimmersive environment thus provides a venue for collaborative work on 3D data such as medical imaging, scientific data and models, archaeological datasets, architectural or mechanical designs, remote training (e.g., oil rigs, military applications), and remote teaching of physical activities (e.g., rehabilitation, dance). In this paper, we present our research work performed over the course of several years in developing the teleimmersive technology using image-based stereo and more recently Kinect. We outline the issues pertaining to the capture, transmission, rendering, and interaction. We describe several applications where we have explored the use of the 3D teleimmersion for remote interaction and collaboration among professional and scientific users. We believe the presented findings are relevant for future developers in teleimmersion and apply across various 3D video capturing technologies.

3D teleimmersion for collaboration and interaction of geographically distributed users

In operating a turbomachine at off-design conditions various instabilities caused by anomalous flow phenomena occur and sometimes lead to the damage of a turbomachine. In order to avoid these phenomena various devices characteristic to each phenomenon have been developed, however they make turbomachines large-sized and cause efficiency drop. The present author has developed a very simple and innovative device, termed “J-groove,” of suppressing various anomalous flow phenomena commonly by controlling the angular momentum of the main flow. It has been revealed that J-groove makes an operation of a turbomachine stable in all flow range, causes little efficiency drop, and can be easily applied to an existing machine. Here is reviewed totally the results of suppressing various anomalous flow phenomena in turbomachines. Introduction In operating a turbomachine at off-design conditions there occur various instabilities caused by anomalous flow phenomena such as surge, rotating stall, cavitation, abnormal axial thrust, impeller whirl and so on. These anomalous phenomena often cause vibration and noise and sometimes lead to the damage of turbomachines. To avoid these phenomena various devices characteristic to each phenomenon have been developed so far[1]. However they make turbomachines large-sized and cause efficiency drop. The present author has found a very simple and innovative device to control and suppress a flow rotation considerably[2]. This device is only to install many shallow grooves on the inner casing wall of a turbomachine in the direction of pressure rise. As a turbomachine is principally an energy converter utilizing flow rotation, this device has a possibility of controlling the internal flow drastically. Thus the present device has been applied to various anomalous flow phenomena in many types of turbomachine and has succeeded in commonly suppressing various instabilities by controlling an angular momentum of the main flow. The present device, termed “J-groove,” shows variously different effects depending on the place of installation. When installed near the entrance of an impeller, J-groove has succeeded in suppressing the whirl of inlet flow, which made the performance-curve instability characterized by a rising head-capacity curve very stable. Thus J-groove can suppress surge without dropping the maximum efficiency in mixed flow and axial flow pumps[3][4]. When installed at the entrance of diffuser of a centrifugal flow type, rotating stall in a vaned and a vaneless diffusers has been perfectly suppressed in the entire flow range and the pressure fluctuation has disappeared[5][6]. Moreover it has improved cavitation performance[7] and reduced axial thrust largely[8]

J-Groove Technique for Suppressing Various Anomalous Flow Phenomena in Turbomachines

Linked micromap (LM) plots offer a new template for displaying spatially indexed statistical summaries. One can use LM plots to visualize complex data in many areas. This paper introduces web-based interactive LM plots, a statistical data visualization system that integrates geographical data manipulation, visualization, interactive statistical graphics, and web-based Java technologies. The system effectively presents the complex and large-volume sample data of national cancer statistics of the United States.

Image-based rendering uses images or photographs to replace geometric models. This technique achieves shorter modeling time, faster rendering speed, and more realism. It also addresses different approaches for turning images into models and then into renderings - including panoramas, image warping, and light fields. In this article, we introduce a hybrid approach that integrates a 3D avatar geometric model with 2D images to achieve more realistic avatars as well as speed up avatar rendering in realtime virtual environments.
