The synergistic effect of surface vacancies and heterojunctions for efficient photocatalysis: A review

Aerogels have attracted widespread interest in adsorption and photocatalysis. The effect of single aerogel material cannot meet the demand and we can enhance the adsorption and photocatalysis efficiency via adding other materials such as ZIF-8 and graphene oxide (GO). We developed an adsorptive and photocatalytic system of ZIF-GO/CCA using a cellulose-based carbon aerogel (CCA) for the fabrication of GO nanosheets modified with ZIF-8-derived carbon (ZIF-C), followed by pyrolysis. The characteristics were evaluated using SEM, HRTEM, BET, XRD, XPS, UV–vis DRS, ESR, PL, EIS and LC-MS analysis. CCA exhibit hierarchical porosity and conductive network, which provides abundant active sites for dye adsorption and degradation. ZnO and g-C3N4 were formed after the incorporation of ZIF-C into GO to, promote charge separation. In the presence of 1ZIF-GO/CCA and at an initial concentration of 300 mg·L−1 MG, the removal of MG exceeded 96%. The removal capacity reached 1152 mg·g−1 after adsorption-photocatalysis for 120 min. 1ZIF-GO/CCA showed the largest specific surface area (375.059 m2·g−1). GO served as an excellent electron accepter to enable fast electron transfer from the ZIF-C to the conduction band of GO. The narrower bandgap (2.06 eV) and lower resistance during charge transfer promoted the separation of e−/h+ and contributed to the higher photocatalytic activity of ZIF-GO/CCA. Further, ZIF-GO/CCA showed increased recyclability. The plausible photocatalytic mechanism for the 1ZIF-GO/CCA was discussed. 

A novel adsorptive and photocatalytic system for dye degradation using ZIF-8 derived carbon (ZIF-C)-modified graphene oxide nanosheets

Complex structures of pharmaceutical antibiotics prevent their natural degradation by traditional remediation strategies, resulting in persistent environmental pollution and reproduction of destructive bacteria, that pose hazardous human health consequences. As a workaround, basil seed biomass resource-derived CuFe2O4/CuO-graphene like carbon S-scheme heterostructure, aiming to eliminate the oxytetracycline (OTC) antibiotic in a persulfate activation helical plug flow photoreactor (HPFPR), is developed via a hydrothermally coupled pyrolysis approach. The champion CuFe2O4/CuO-graphene like carbon manifests the best photo-degradation efficiency (87.49% within 90 min) with the photoreaction rate constant of 0.0495 min−1 for OTC degradation. The desirable photo-degradation efficiency was assigned to the higher visible-light absorbance, built-in interfacial electric field and reduced recombination of charge carriers, and superior redox capability due to the S-scheme heterojunction. The HPFPR's performance was verified by a 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model and central composite design (CCD). As proposed CuFe2O4/CuO-rGO demonstrated significant reusability and stability owing to the presence of a carbon shell. The scale-up in-situ synthesis of environmentally friendly, large-scale metal oxide heterojunctions in natural carbon supports offer novel insights in photocatalytic production for promising water treatment applications. 

Green Synthesis of Stable CuFe2O4/CuO-rGO Heterostructure Photocatalyst Using Basil Seeds as Chemo-reactors for Improved Oxytetracycline Degradation

ABSTRACTThis study utilised activated carbon, synthesised with H3PO4 as an active agent (referred to as C-H3PO4), as an adsorbent for the removal of tetracycline (TC), a commonly used pharmaceutical compound. The activated carbon underwent characterisation through SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XRD analyses. The C-H3PO4 particles were found to range in size from 63 to 50 µm and possessed acidic functions within a surface area of 590 mmol/g. To assess the adsorptive performance of C-H3PO4 in relation to tetracycline, several operational parameters were investigated, including contact time, temperature, pH, concentration of the pharmaceutical compound, and C-H3PO4 dosage. Optimal conditions were determined as follows: a pH of 2.8, a TC concentration of 15 mg/L, a temperature of 308 K, and an adsorbent dosage of 90 mg, utilising the design of experiments (DOE/FFD) for parameter optimisation. In addition, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and three-dimensional surface plots were created to evaluate the interaction between the factors and the ideal conditions for removing tetracycline. The maximum adsorption capacity of C-H3PO4 onto TC was found to be 7.41 mg/g.
