Triple-synergistic MOF-nanozyme for efficient antibacterial treatment

The frequent outbreak of global infectious diseases has prompted the development of rapid and effective diagnostic tools for the early screening of potential patients in point-of-care testing scenarios. With advances in mobile computing power and microfluidic technology, the smartphone-based mobile health platform has drawn significant attention from researchers developing point-of-care testing devices that integrate microfluidic optical detection with artificial intelligence analysis. In this article, we summarize recent progress in these mobile health platforms, including the aspects of microfluidic chips, imaging modalities, supporting components, and the development of software algorithms. We document the application of mobile health platforms in terms of the detection objects, including molecules, viruses, cells, and parasites. Finally, we discuss the prospects for future development of mobile health platforms.

Self-Driving Platform for Metal Nanoparticle Synthesis: Combining Microfluidics and Machine Learning

Nanozymes with peroxidase-like activity have great application potential in combating pathogenic bacterial infections and are expected to become an alternative to antibiotics. However, the near-neutral pH and high glutathione (GSH) levels in the bacterial infection microenvironment severely limit their applications in antibacterial therapy. In this work, a metal-organic framework (MOF)-based cascade catalytic glutathione-depleting system named MnFe2O4@MIL/Au&GOx (MMAG) was constructed. The MMAG cascade-catalyzed glucose to provide H+ and produces a large amount of toxic reactive oxygen species. In addition, MMAG consumed GSH, which can result in bacterial death more easily. Systematic antibacterial experiments illustrated that MMAG has superior antibacterial effects on both Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria.

Antibacterial Cascade Catalytic Glutathione-Depleting MOF Nanoreactors.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is an emerging technology with great potential, and its robust calculation and analysis capabilities are unmatched by traditional calculation tools. With the promotion of deep learning and open-source platforms, the threshold of AI has also become lower. Combining artificial intelligence with traditional fields to create new fields of high research and application value has become a trend. AI has been involved in many disciplines, such as medicine, materials, energy, and economics. The development of AI requires the support of many kinds of data, and microfluidic systems can often mine object data on a large scale to support AI. Due to the excellent synergy between the two technologies, excellent research results have emerged in many fields. In this review, we briefly review AI and microfluidics and introduce some applications of their combination, mainly in nanomedicine and material synthesis. Finally, we discuss the development trend of the combination of the two technologies.

Artificial intelligence-powered microfluidics for nanomedicine and materials synthesis.

With the rapid development of biomedical sciences, contradictory results on the relationships between biological responses and material properties emerge continuously, adding to the challenge of interpreting the incomprehensible interfacial process. In the present paper, we use cell proliferation on titanium dioxide nanotubes (TNTs) as a case study and apply machine learning methodologies to decipher contradictory results in the literature. The gradient boosting decision tree model demonstrates that cell density has a higher impact on cell proliferation than other obtainable experimental features in most publications. Together with the variation of other essential features, the controversy of cell proliferation trends on various TNTs is understandable. By traversing all combinational experimental features and the corresponding forecast using an exhausted grid search strategy, we find that adjusting cell density and sterilization methods can simultaneously induce opposite cell proliferation trends on various TNTs diameter, which is further validated by experiments. This case study reveals that machine learning is a burgeoning tool in deciphering controversial results in biomedical researches, opening up an avenue to explore the structure-property relationships of biomaterials.
