Bound states of solitons ("molecules") occur in various settings, playing an important role in the operation of fiber lasers, optical emulation, encoding, and communications. Soliton interactions are generally related to breathing dynamics in nonlinear dissipative systems, and maintain potential applications in spectroscopy. In the present work, dichromatic breather molecules (DBMs) are created in a synchronized mode-locked fiber laser. Real-time delay-shifting interference spectra are measured to display the temporal evolution of the DBMs, that cannot be observed by means of the usual real-time spectroscopy. As a result, robust out-of-phase vibrations are found as a typical intrinsic mode of DBMs. The same bound states are produced numerically in the framework of a model combining equations for the population inversion in the mode-locked laser and cross-phase-modulation-coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau equations for amplitudes of the optical fields in the fiber segments of the laser cavity. The results demonstrate that the Q-switching instability induces the onset of breathing oscillations. The findings offer new possibilities for the design of various regimes of the operation of ultrafast lasers.

Dissipative pure-quartic soliton resonance in an Er-doped fiber laser

We numerically study the transport dynamics of vector solitons in ytterbium-doped fiber lasers based on a coupled Ginzburg-Landau equation with higher-order effects. By adjusting the small signal gain coefficient and intracavity birefringence, the number of soliton molecules can be manipulated, the transmission of synchronous and asynchronous vector solitons and the generation of chaotic pulse sequences can be realized. Synchronous vector solitons can be generated when the intracavity birefringence is relatively low, the stable transmission of multi-soliton molecules and the interaction between soliton molecules can be achieved. By changing the value of the phase delay, periodic pulsating solitons can be produced. Furthermore, the phenomenon of the pulse train from the period-doubling to chaos can also be observed. With the enhancement of the intracavity birefringence, asynchronous vector solitons can also achieve stable transmission in the cavity, which the amplitudes and widths of two components are opposite with the different phases. The proposed model has universal application value and the numerical results have guiding significance for studying polarization tunable lasers and exploring the nonlinear mechanism in fiber lasers.

: Soliton molecules have been a striking research area, which is significant for the exploration of physical mechanism in various nonlinear systems, the analog to the molecule of matter, and the potential applications in multilevel encoding of optical communications. Here, we demonstrate a novel dichromatic soliton-molecular compound (SMC) that is a hybrid bound states of multiple pulses with two different frequencies connected by two different binding mechanisms. It exhibits unique temporal and spectral profiles that can be described as the bounded temporal and dichromatic soliton molecules. The vibrating SMCs are generated experimentally and numerically to demonstrate the intrinsic solution in the dissipative nonlinear system, which is characterized with the vibration both in time and frequency dimensions and dual-peak evolution trajectory induced by the time-frequency coupling. These results enrich the concept of soliton molecules and further promote the analogy to matter molecules.
