We report the new synthesis route of hierarchical yttria (Y2O3) nanosphere decorated ceria (CeO2) nanorods from the precursor cerium nitrate and yttrium nitrate under hydrothermal method (HM). Synthesized nanorods (NRs) were analyzed by different techniques to investigate their textural morphology, size and shape of nanorods and crystalline structures, morphology growth, optical activity and sizes of the samples. The luminescence blue peaks were observed in the range of 450–490 nm and green emission appeared at 533 nm at the room temperature (RT), the presence of oxygen vacancies was confirmed. The photodecomposition nature of the prepared nanosamples was investigated by using the industrial effluent Rhodamine-B (RhB) dye in aqueous medium by the illumination of solar light. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency showed 95.8% for RhB after 240 min. On illumination of visible light, the catalyst was found to tend to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), which might account for the decay of dyes into small fractions. The enhanced photocatalytic effect of the synthesized NRs was primarily ascribed to the rising in the separation efficiency of electrons and holes.

In order to cope with climate change and implement low-carbon development, the energy structure cannot be separated from the production of clean energy. Rare earth elements are widely used in the fields of electronics, metallurgy, energy, and environmental protection due to their physical and chemical properties. On the one hand, the accumulation of electronic waste has a large impact on the environment due to the widespread use of rare earth devices. On the other hand, with the continuous mining of mineral resources, the amount of rare earth tailings is increasing, which is not in line with the development of sustainable circular economy. Therefore, the green recycling of REEs is of great importance to the environment and sustainable development. This paper assesses the low carbon and sustainability of the recovery of rare earth elements from secondary resources by hydrometallurgical, pyrometallurgical and bio-metallurgical processes in terms of socio-economic factors, including their advantages and disadvantages and how losses can be minimized. In addition, it provides a fuller exploration path and prospect for achieving green recycling and sustainable application of recycling in the future. 

Green recovery of rare earth elements under sustainability and low carbon: A review of current challenges and opportunities

Photoluminescence properties and energy transfer in the color tunable Ba2CaZn2Si6O17:Bi3+, Tb3+, Eu3+ silicate phosphor for white LED applications

LaMgAl11O19, is a kind of rare earth aluminate with the hexagonal structure, which has been used as a host material for the luminescence of various rare earth and magnet-like ions. LaMgAl11O19:Eu3+ phosphors have been prepared through the one-pot method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and photoluminescence spectra were used to characterize the resulting phosphors. The results of XRD indicated that the phosphors crystallized completely at 1,400 degrees C. In LaMgAl11O19:Eu3+ phosphors, the Eu3+ shows its characteristic red emission at 615 nm (5D0-7F2) upon excitation into 404 nm, with an optimum doping concentration of 15 mol% of La3+ in the host lattices.

Bi3+, Eu3+, Dy3+ activated Y2O3 phosphors were prepared through the sol-gel process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, and photoluminescence (PL) spectra were used to characterize the resulting phosphors. The XRD patterns show the refined crystal structure of Y2O3. The energy transfer processes of Bi(3+)-Eu3+ occurred in the host lattices. The thermal stability of Y2O3:Bi3+, Eu3+, Dy3+ phosphors was studied. Under short wavelength UV excitation, the phosphors show excellent characteristic red, blue, and yellow emission with medium intensity.
