Wireless body area networks (WBANs) are a new advance utilized in recent years to increase the quality of human life by monitoring the conditions of patients inside and outside hospitals, the activities of athletes, military applications, and multimedia. WBANs consist of intelligent micro- or nano-sensors capable of processing and sending information to the base station (BS). Sensors embedded in the bodies of individuals can enable vital information exchange over wireless communication. Network forming of these sensors envisages long-term medical care without restricting patients’ normal daily activities as part of diagnosing or caring for a patient with a chronic illness or monitoring the patient after surgery to manage emergencies. This paper reviews WBAN, its security challenges, body sensor network architecture and functions, and communication technologies. The work reported in this paper investigates a significant security-level challenge existing in WBAN. Lastly, it highlights various mechanisms for increasing security and decreasing energy consumption.

Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN): A Survey on Architecture, Technologies, Energy Consumption, and Security Challenges

Wireless sensor network comprises of a large number of sensor nodes to acquire and transmit data to the central location. However, due to resource constrained nodes, deployment strategies and communication channel introduce numerous security challenges to the wireless sensor networks. So, it is essential to detect unauthorized access to improve the security features of wireless sensor networks. Network intrusion detection systems provide such services to the network and it becomes inevitable for any communication network. Machine learning (ML) techniques are widely used in intrusion detection systems; however, the performance of ML techniques is not satisfactory while handling imbalanced attacks. To solve this and to improve the performance, this research work proposed an intrusion detection system based on deep neural network (DNN). Cross-correlation process is used to select the optimal features from the dataset and the selected parameters are used as building blocks for deep neural network structure to find intrusions. The experimental results confirmed that the proposed DNN performs better than conventional machine learning models such as support vector machine, decision tree, and random forest and efficiently identifies the attacks.

The Internet of Things (IoTs) is defined as a network of ordinary objects such as Internet TVs, smartphones, actuators and sensors that are smartly connected together to enable new types of communication between people and things as well as between things themselves. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) play an important part in Internet of Things (IoT) technology. A contribution to wireless sensor networks and IoT applications is wireless sensor nodes’ construction with high-speed CPUs and low-power radio links. The IoT-based wireless Sensor network (WSN) is a game-changing smart monitoring solution. ZigBee standard is an important wireless sensor network (WSN) and Internet of Things (IoT) communication protocol in order to facilitate low-power, low-cost IoT applications and to handle numerous network topologies. This paper presented a review on the energy efficient and routing topologies of ZigBee WSN, applications of IoT enabled Wireless Sensor Network as well IoT WSN security challenges.

Internet of things based wireless sensor network: a review

The Internet of Things (IoT) uses wireless networks without infrastructure to install a huge number of wireless sensors that track system, physical, and environmental factors. There are a variety of WSN uses, and some well-known application factors include energy consumption and lifespan duration for routing purposes. The sensors have detecting, processing, and communication capabilities. In this paper, an intelligent healthcare system is proposed which consists of nano sensors that collect real-time health status and transfer it to the doctor’s server. Time consumption and various attacks are major concerns, and some existing techniques contain stumbling blocks. Therefore, in this research, a genetic-based encryption method is advocated to protect data transmitted over a wireless channel using sensors to avoid an uncomfortable data transmission environment. An authentication procedure is also proposed for legitimate users to access the data channel. Results show that the proposed algorithm is lightweight and energy efficient, and time consumption is 90% lower with a higher security ratio.

Wireless communication and embedded technology have made the wireless sensor network (WSN) possible. The sensors, which are deployed in an environment, are required to collect data from their surroundings, process the data, and send it to the sink. Traditional WSNs collect the data such as temperature and pressure. WSN has potential to design many new applications for handling emergency, military, and disaster relief operations that require real-time information for efficient coordination and planning. The self-organization and cooperation of wireless sensor network have opened up a broad application prospect. However, wireless sensor network has the characteristics of resource limitation and design constraint. Resource limitation means that sensor nodes have limited wireless communication range, limited power supply, low bandwidth, limited computing power, and storage capacity. Design constraint means that the design of wireless sensor network depends on its application purpose and the monitored physical environment. This paper first introduces the concept of wireless sensor and expounds the challenges brought by the characteristics of wireless sensor network. Secondly, this paper introduces the representative research work from the aspects of network standard communication protocol network management technology and data compression technology.
