The study of multi-agent systems (MAS) focuses on systems in which many intelligent agents interact with each other. These agents are considered to be autonomous entities such as software programs or robots. Their interactions can either be cooperative (for example as in an ant colony) or selfish (as in a free market economy). This book assumes only basic knowledge of algorithms and discrete maths, both of which are taught as standard in the first or second year of computer science degree programmes. A basic knowledge of artificial intelligence would useful to help understand some of the issues, but is not essential. An Introduction to MultiAgent Systems.

In this paper, we mainly review the topics in consensus and coordination of multi-agent systems, which have received a tremendous surge of interest and progressed rapidly in the past few years. Focusing on different kinds of constraints on the controller and the self-dynamics of each individual agent, as well as the coordination schemes, we categorize the recent results into the following directions: consensus with constraints, event-based consensus, consensus over signed networks, and consensus of heterogeneous agents. We also review some applications of the very well developed consensus algorithms to the topics such as economic dispatch problem in smart grid and k -means clustering algorithms.

The microgrid concept is gaining popularity with the proliferation of distributed generation. Control techniques in the microgrid are an evolving research topic in the area of microgrids. A large volume of survey articles focuses on the control techniques of the microgrid; however, a systematic survey of the hierarchical control techniques based on different microgrid architectures is addressed very little. The hierarchy of control in microgrid comprises three layers, which are primary, secondary, and tertiary control layers. A review of the primary and secondary control strategies for the ac, dc, and hybrid ac–dc microgrid is addressed in this paper. Furthermore, it includes the highlights of the state-of-the-art control techniques and evolving trends in the microgrid research.

Control Techniques in AC, DC, and Hybrid AC–DC Microgrid: A Review

In recent years, due to the wide utilization of direct current (DC) power sources, such as solar photovoltaic (PV), fuel cells, different DC loads, high-level integration of different energy storage systems such as batteries, supercapacitors, DC microgrids have been gaining more importance. Furthermore, unlike conventional AC systems, DC microgrids do not have issues such as synchronization, harmonics, reactive power control, and frequency control. However, the incorporation of different distributed generators, such as PV, wind, fuel cell, loads, and energy storage devices in the common DC bus complicates the control of DC bus voltage as well as the power-sharing. In order to ensure the secure and safe operation of DC microgrids, different control techniques, such as centralized, decentralized, distributed, multilevel, and hierarchical control, are presented. The optimal planning of DC microgrids has an impact on operation and control algorithms; thus, coordination among them is required. A detailed review of the planning, operation, and control of DC microgrids is missing in the existing literature. Thus, this article documents developments in the planning, operation, and control of DC microgrids covered in research in the past 15 years. DC microgrid planning, operation, and control challenges and opportunities are discussed. Different planning, control, and operation methods are well documented with their advantages and disadvantages to provide an excellent foundation for industry personnel and researchers. Power-sharing and energy management operation, control, and planning issues are summarized for both grid-connected and islanded DC microgrids. Also, key research areas in DC microgrid planning, operation, and control are identified to adopt cutting-edge technologies. This review explicitly helps readers understand existing developments on DC microgrid planning, operation, and control as well as identify the need for additional research in order to further contribute to the topic.

DC Microgrid Planning, Operation, and Control: A Comprehensive Review

In traditional power system, economic dispatch and generation control are separately applied. Online generation adjustment is necessary to regulate generation reference for real-time control to realize economic operation of power systems. Since most economic dispatch solutions are centralized, they are usually expensive to implement, susceptible to single-point-failures, and inflexible. To address the above-mentioned problems, this paper proposed a multi-agent system based distributed control solution that can realize optimal generation control. The solution is designed based upon an improved distributed gradient algorithm, which can address both equality and inequality constraints. To improve the reliability of multi-agent system, the N-1 rule is introduced to design the communication network topology. Compared with centralized solutions, the distributed control solution not only can achieve comparable solutions but also can respond timely when the system experiences change of operating conditions. MAS based real-time simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed solution.

Online Optimal Generation Control Based on Constrained Distributed Gradient Algorithm

For a microgrid with high renewable energy penetration to work autonomously, it must maintain its own supply-demand balance of active power. Maximum peak power tracking algorithms, which emphasize high renewable energy utilization, may cause a supply-demand imbalance when the available renewable generation is more than demanded, especially for autonomous microgrids. Currently, droop control is one of the most popular decentralized methods for sharing active and reactive loads among the distributed generators. However, conventional droop control methods suffer from slow and oscillating dynamic response and steady state deviations. To overcome these problems, this paper proposes a distributed subgradient-based solution to coordinate the operations of different types of distributed renewable generators in a microgrid. By controlling the utilization levels of renewable generators, the supply-demand balance can be well maintained and the system dynamic performance can be significantly improved. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control solution.

Distributed Subgradient-Based Coordination of Multiple Renewable Generators in a Microgrid

Three-phase AC/DC converter is widely used in many industrial applications. To improve performance, this paper proposes an adaptive neural network based controller design for three-phase PWM AC/DC voltage source converters. The controller is designed based on a nonlinear multi-input multi-output model using Lyapunovpsilas direct method. Since neural networks can approximate unknown nonlinear dynamics, there is no need to know the parameters of the system. In this way, the controller is robust to parameter drifting and changes of operating points. Additionally, the proposed control can be applied directly online after initialization. Thus, the time-consuming offline training process is avoided. Furthermore, the proposed controller design also avoids the singularity problem, which may exist in regular feedback linearization based controls. Co-simulation using Matlab/Simulink and PSIM demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed controller design.

Neural network based controller design for three-phase PWM AC/DC voltage source converters

In order to estimate the bath endpoint phosphorus [P] content and manganese [Mn] content for Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) steelmaking process, three BOF endpoint estimation models are given according to the fast speed case, the slow speed case and the middle speed case of analyzing the sublance in-blowing sample. The first one is modeled from metallurgic mechanism, the second is with RBF NN and the last one is modeled using least square method. With theses models, steelmaker can get the estimation of BOF endpoint [P] and [Mn] based on the process information and the sublance measurement. The industrial experiment shows that these models are helpful and powerful.
