This paper provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in membrane modification for fouling mitigation in various water treatment processes, employing carbon nanomaterials such as fullerenes, nanodiamonds, carbon quantum dots, carbon nanotubes, and graphene oxide. Currently, using different carbon nanomaterials for polymeric membrane fouling mitigation is at various stages: CNT-modified membranes have been studied for more than ten years and have already been tested in pilot-scale setups; tremendous attention has been paid to utilizing graphene oxide as a modifying agent, while the research on carbon quantum dots' influence on the membrane antifouling properties is in the early stages. Given the intricate nature of fouling as a colloidal phenomenon, the review initially delves into the factors influencing the fouling process and explores strategies to address it. The diverse chemistry and antibacterial properties of carbon nanomaterials make them valuable for mitigating scaling, colloidal, and biofouling. This review covers surface modification of existing membranes using different carbon materials, which can be implemented as a post-treatment procedure during membrane fabrication. Creating mixed-matrix membranes by incorporating carbon nanomaterials into the polymer matrix requires the development of new synthetic procedures. Additionally, it discusses promising strategies to actively suppress fouling through external influences on modified membranes. In the concluding section, the review compares the effectiveness of carbon materials of varying dimensions and identifies key characteristics influencing the antifouling properties of membranes modified with carbon nanomaterials. 

Membrane modification with carbon nanomaterials for fouling mitigation: A review.

The high ion leaching, low photogenerated charge separation efficiency, and slow metal valence cycling of Fe-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have limited their application in the deep treatment of organic pollutants. Herein, FeCu bimetallic MOFs (FeCuBDC) were synthesized using a modified solvothermal method, and a coupled photo-Fenton degradation system was successfully constructed. Degradation performance tests showed that FeCuBDC could efficiently degrade 99.3% ± 0.1% of 50 mg/L phenol within 40 min. The reaction rate constants of the photo-Fenton system were 11.0 and 64.7 times higher than those of the single Fenton reaction and photocatalysis, respectively. FeCuBDC also exhibits good cycling stability, degradation generalization, and excellent photoelectric catalytic properties. Such a considerable enhancement in the overall performance pertains to the following. First, the introduction of Cu into Fe-MOFs not only improves the crystallinity and stability, but also reduces the band gap value, increases the absorption capacity of visible light, and promotes the generation of photogenerated carriers. Second, the FeCu in MOFs are all mixed valence. Initially, the high-valence FeCu captures photogenerated electrons and promotes photogenerated charge separation and transfer. Then, the low-valence FeCu adsorbs and decomposes H2O2, accelerating the valence cycling of the bimetallic sites. The core of the reaction mechanism is that FeCuBDC effectively promotes the photo-Fenton synergy.

Progress on CO2-induced inactivation of solid amine adsorbents

Three kinds of Zn-containing Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (Zn-ZIFs, including ZIF-8, ZIF-11 and ZIF-14) based on the zinc ions coordinating with different imidazolate ligands were added into the natural rubber (NR) using the DM and TMTD binary accelerators system, respectively. The influences of Zn-ZIFs on the sulfur vulcanization behaviors and mechanical properties of NR matrix were evaluated. The results indicated that the addition of ZIF-8 or ZIF-14 could realize the fast vulcanization of NR at 130°C (the ordinary vulcanization temperature of NR is above 150°C), while ZIF-11 did not show the obvious accelerating performance. Amongst the three Zn-ZIFs, ZIF-8 benefited NR matrix for the acquirement of the highest tensile strength and the largest crosslinking density. As an optimal additive, ZIF-8 with 0.6 phr distinctly improved the physical-mechanical, thermo-oxidative aging resistance and dynamic mechanical properties of NR composites. It proved that Zn atom and its coordination porous network in Zn-ZIFs played synergistic effects in accelerating vulcanization and enhancing mechanical properties of NR matrix besides its role of reinforcement filler. Then the above ZIF-8/DM/TMTD vulcanization system was used to prepare the UHMWPE fibers/NR composites. The mechanical properties of the UHMWPE/NR composites were significantly improved in contrast to the pure NR matrix.
