Medical crowdfunding is a rapidly growing healthcare practice whereby individuals leverage online platforms to assemble numerous small donations for health-related needs. In China, due to limited medical resources and disparities between urban and rural public healthcare systems, medical crowdfunding can play a complementary role in supporting the current publicly-funded medical insurance system. To date, few studies have investigated the determinants of successful medical crowdfunding projects in China. By collecting data from the Tencent GongYi platform, one of the largest government-authorized online crowdfunding platforms in China, this exploratory study adopts a sequential qualitative-quantitative mixed-methods approach to identify potential factors that influence medical crowdfunding practices. The findings suggest that health-related characteristics have the most significant influence on the success of medical crowdfunding in China. Specifically, projects that target non-major diseases and diseases with low mortality rates and/or high frequency are more likely to draw significant attention and succeed. The stages of disease diagnosis and treatment also have an impact. In addition, a number of demographic and social factors, such as age, location, place of residence of the fundraiser, and the social capital of the project initiator were found to be significantly related to project success. This study sheds light on local practices in medical crowdfunding in China and provides insights into the design and implementation of medical crowdfunding projects.

Understanding the determinants of online medical crowdfunding project success in China

Online charitable crowdfunding has become an increasingly popular approach for online fundraising and has attracted widespread concern in society However, little is known about donation allocation in the implementation of online charitable crowdfunding, especially the purposes involved and the specific flows of these donations To this end, this study aims to explore project initiators’ fundraising allocation by identifying latent intentions from a large sample of project descriptions and by uncovering spatial patterns in the flow of cross-regional donations By collecting data from the Tencent GongYi platform, one of the largest government-authorized online crowdfunding platforms in China, we conducted a comparative analysis of four types of crowdfunding projects (ie, medical, educational, poverty-related, and environmental) to examine differences in their general characteristics and donation allocation The findings suggest that the success rates for these four different types of online charitable crowdfunding vary and that the key influencing factor among them is the type of project executors Most of the donations are used to fund children and older adults, especially for neglected children in rural areas and neglected elders In terms of the spatial analysis of the different categories of charitable crowdfunding projects, the results also reveal that the flow of online donations is not equitably distributed and tends to be concentrated in a few relatively developed regions Specifically, eastern China, with a higher GDP, receives more donations than western China, with a lower GDP Our research contributes to a better understanding of the donation allocation of online charitable crowdfunding and points to some general implications for online charitable crowdfunding research and practice globally

Exploring the donation allocation of online charitable crowdfunding based on topical and spatial analysis: Evidence from the Tencent GongYi

This purpose of this study is to develop a research model by extending the theory of planned behavior in a new application context, and applies it to investigate the extrinsic factors influencing people’s attitude towards donating to medical crowdfunding projects appearing on mobile social networking sites (MSNS) and their intention to donate. A survey of 356 Chinese users was conducted and structural equation modeling was used to validate the proposed model and hypotheses. The results indicate that project information, retweeter information and MSNS information all have the significant effect on the general attitude towards donating to medical crowdfunding projects, and general attitude positively affects people’s donation intention. In addition, perceived behavioral control also has positive effect on people’s donation intention, while experienced donating to medical crowdfunding projects has negative effect on people’s donation intention. The research findings provide important theoretical and practical implications.

Factors Influencing Donation Intention to Personal Medical Crowdfunding Projects Appearing on MSNS

Crowdfunding is emerging as an alternative form of funding for medical purposes, with capital being raised directly from a broader and more diverse audience of investors. In this paper, we have systematically researched and reviewed the literature on medical crowdfunding to determine how crowdfunding connects with the health care industry. The health care industry has been struggling to develop sustainable research and business models for economic systems and investors alike, especially in pharmaceuticals. The research results have revealed a wealth of evidence concerning the way crowdfunding is applied in real life. Patients and caregivers utilize web platform-based campaigns all over the world to fund their medical expenses, generally on a spot basis, using donation-based or even reward-based schemes, regardless of the health care system archetype (public, private insurance-based or hybrid). Academics have also focused on funding campaigns and the predictors of success (which range from social behaviour and environment to the basic demographics of the campaigners and their diseases) and on social and regulatory concerns, including heightened social inequality and stigma. While equity crowdfunding is disrupting the way many ventures/businesses seek capital in the market, our research indicates that there are no relevant or consistent data on the practice of medical equity crowdfunding in health care, apart from a few anecdotal cases.

An overview of Fintech applications to solve the puzzle of health care funding: state-of-the-art in medical crowdfunding

By conceptualizing identity as a type of illocutionary resource, this study seeks to address the unheeded identity work that Chinese charities perform in their online donation-oriented crowdfunding appeals (hereafter ODC appeals). The analysis of 60 appeals drawn from an ODC platform based in China shows that via the employment of identity-oriented strategies (viz. foregrounding, creating and identification seeking), Chinese charities exploit the diverse dimensions of identity, not only of the charities themselves but of their beneficiaries and prospective donors as well. It is argued that such diverse identity work is influenced by both the institutional context surrounding ODC practices and the wider sociocultural context of China. By providing a finer picture of Chinese charities’ identity work pertaining to the different dimensions of identity, this study may shed light on t he emerging research into ODC appeals and will add non-Western insights to previous discussions on humanitarian communication.

"Kindhearted People, Please Save My Family": Narrative Strategies for New Media Medical Crowdfunding.

The sudden and unpredictable outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has severely threatened young adults’ physical and mental health and damaged the quality of relationships. As a critical stage of development, their well-being is more vulnerable to adverse environments which may lead to profound negative long-life mental health status. The current study aimed to investigate the mediation effects of fear of intimacy and attachment avoidance in the association between ambivalence over emotional expression and subjective wellbeing. A sample of 555 Chinese college students who are currently involved in romantic relationships (Mean age = 19.69, SD age = 1.36, 52% females) completed anonymous questionnaires regarding ambivalence over emotional expression, fear of intimacy, attachment avoidance, and subjective wellbeing. The findings revealed that ambivalence over emotional expression can predict negative subjective wellbeing of college students in romantic relationships significantly, and fear of intimacy and attachment avoidance played a sequentially mediating role in the association between ambivalence over emotional expression and subjective wellbeing. Surprisingly, when considering attachment avoidance independently, we found it had an inhibitory action on the link between ambivalence over emotional expression and subjective wellbeing. The present study contributes to a better understanding of how ambivalence over emotional expression can decrease subjective wellbeing, and also has implications for the intervention of students’ subjective wellbeing and closeness during the period of COVID-19.

Impact of the China Healthy Cities Pilot Policy on the Level of Healthy Aging in Older Adults

Aging in place with a suitable living environment is essential for the health and well-being of older adults. However, the willingness of older people to modify their housing to meet their needs is not strong. Using the Analytic Network Process (ANP) method, the study first explores the weights of factors, such as perceived behavioral control, policies, and market conditions that influence older adults’ behavioral intention. Then, a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach was used to dissect the psychological factors which account for the largest proportion. Using data from 560 people aged 70 or older from Beijing, results suggest that effectiveness perception, cost perception, and subjective norms can influence older people’s behavioral intention directly or indirectly through emotional attitudes. Risk perception can moderate the level of behavioral intention triggered by cost perceptions. This study provides new evidence for the impact of factors and interaction mechanism on older adults’ behavioral intentions toward age-friendly home modifications.

How to Influence Behavioral Intention Toward Age-Friendly Home Modifications in Urban Older People Aged 70+

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of assistive devices on the level of depression among older adults. Using data from the 2015 and 2018 waves of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Studies (CHARLS), we analysed this effect through the PSM-DID model and verified the mechanism of the effect through Hayes' mediating effect model. The results showed that assistive devices increased depression levels in older adults. Moreover, there were significant differences among different groups of older adults. The use of assistive devices in developed areas, women, people under 75 years old, and socially active older people had a deeper impact on the level of depression. Differences in the type and number of assistive devices used also affect the level of depression in older people. Furthermore, assistive devices use in older adults increases depression levels by decreasing health satisfaction. This study provides new evidence to explore the relationship between the use of assistive devices and depression levels in older adults. Meanwhile, our research illustrates the importance of developing products and services with age-friendly technology.
