Biomacromolecules as carriers in drug delivery and tissue engineering.

Electrospinning is a versatile technique used to create native tissue-like fibrous scaffolds. Recently, it has gained a large amount of attention for generation of bioactive dressing materials suitable for treatment of both chronic and acute wounds. In this Review, we focus on the latest advances made in the application of electrospun scaffolds for bioactive wound healing. We first provide a brief overview of the wound healing process and electrospinning approaches. We then discuss fabrication of scaffolds made from natural and synthetic polymers via electrospinning for effective wound treatment and management. Natural polymers used for wound healing included in our Review cover protein based polymers such as collagen, gelatin, and silk and polysaccharide based polymers such as chitosan, hyaluronic acid, and alginate. Latest Progress in Electrospun Nanofibers for Wound Healing Applications

Cancer remains one of the major health problems all over the world and conventional therapeutic approaches have failed to attain an effective cure. Tumor microenvironments (TME) present a unique challenge in tumor therapy due to their complex structures and multiple components, which also serve as the soil for tumor growth, development, invasion, and migration. The complex TME includes immune cells, fibrous collagen structures, and tortuous blood vessels, in which conventional therapeutic approaches are rendered useless. State-of-the-art nanotechnologies have potential to cope with the threats of malignant tumors. With unique physiochemical properties, carbon nanomaterials (CNMs), including graphene, fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and carbon quantum dots, offer opportunities to resolve the hurdles, by targeting not only cancer cells but also the TME. This review summarizes the progress about CNM-based cancer therapy strategies, which mainly focuses on both the treatment for cancer cells and TME-targeted modulation. In the last, the challenges for TME-based therapy via CNMs are discussed, which will be important in guiding current basic research to clinical translation in the future.

Carbon-Based Nanomaterials for Cancer Therapy via Targeting Tumor Microenvironment.

Innovative solutions using biopolymer-based materials made of several constituents seems to be particularly attractive for packaging in biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. In this direction, some progress has been made in extending use of the electrospinning process towards fiber formation based on biopolymers and organic compounds for the preparation of novel packaging materials. Electrospinning can be used to create nanofiber mats characterized by high purity of the material, which can be used to create active and modern biomedical and pharmaceutical packaging. Intelligent medical and biomedical packaging with the use of polymers is a broadly and rapidly growing field of interest for industries and academia. Among various polymers, alginate has found many applications in the food sector, biomedicine, and packaging. For example, in drug delivery systems, a mesh made of nanofibres produced by the electrospinning method is highly desired. Electrospinning for biomedicine is based on the use of biopolymers and natural substances, along with the combination of drugs (such as naproxen, sulfikoxazol) and essential oils with antibacterial properties (such as tocopherol, eugenol). This is a striking method due to the ability of producing nanoscale materials and structures of exceptional quality, allowing the substances to be encapsulated and the drugs/biologically active substances placed on polymer nanofibers. So, in this article we briefly summarize the recent advances on electrospinning of biopolymers with particular emphasis on usage of Alginate for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications.

Biomedical application and controlled drug release of electrospun fibrous materials.

The invention particularly relates to a quercetin-low molecular heparin-paclitaxel conjugate as well as a preparation method and application thereof. Quercetin and paclitaxel have good anti-tumor activity, but the quercetin and the paclitaxel are poor in water solubility and low in bioavailability, so that the clinical application condition is not ideal. The invention provides a paclitaxel-low molecular heparin-quercetin conjugate. Low-molecular heparin sodium is taken as a skeleton and the paclitaxel and the quercetin are connected through covalent bonds. As an anti-tumor active component, the conjugate effectively improves the defect of poor solubility of the paclitaxel and the quercetin. The conjugate obtained according to the preparation method basically does not destroy the active structures of the paclitaxel and the quercetin, well retains the pharmacological activity of the paclitaxel and the quercetin, is applied to anti-tumor drugs, is expected to achieve the treatment effectof the paclitaxel and the quercetin, and has important clinical treatment significance.
