La0.3(Ba0.5Sr0.5)0.7Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ is a promising bifunctional perovskite catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction and the oxygen evolution reaction. This catalyst has circa 10 nm-scale rhombohedral LaCoO3 cobaltite particles distributed on the surface. The dynamic microstructure phenomena are attributed to the charge imbalance from the replacement of A-site cations with La3+ and local stress on Co-site sub-lattice with the cubic perovskite structure.

A Bifunctional Perovskite Catalyst for Oxygen Reduction and Evolution

This study reports the heterogeneous catalytic degradation and mineralization of phenol in aqueous solution by means of potassium monopersulfate (PMS or Oxone) process mediated by cobalt perovskite-based catalysts (P-Co). Four nanostructured perovskites oxides with formula ACoO3 (A = Ba, Ce, La, Sr) were synthesized as heterogeneous catalysts by the citrate sol gel method and characterized by means of nitrogen isotherm adsorption (BET), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDX), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) techniques. All the examined samples had perovskite structure. The influences of PMS dosage, catalyst loading, initial target compound concentration and solution pH on the removal efficiency were studied. The activity showed an order of SrCoO3 > LaCoO3 > BaCoO3 > CeCoO3. LaCoO3 and SrCoO3 catalysts exhibit the better performance in terms of reaction rate and stability for the phenol degradation and mineralization by advanced oxidation technology based on sulfate radicals. Catalyst stability was assessed by means of consecutive reuse cycles. No significant loss of activity was noticed after five consecutive cycles. The role of reactive oxygen species produced in the system, mainly SO4 − and OH, in the overall oxidation of phenol was determined by using suitable scavenger compounds. Under optimal conditions (10−4 M PMS, natural pH, 0.3 gL−1 catalyst loading) complete removal of 20 mgL−1 phenol was achieved in 90 min. In terms of organic carbon removal, about 81% mineralization yield was reached in the optimal conditions for 6 h heterogeneous P-Co/PMS system, suggesting an effective process for phenol mineralization. Four organics intermediates were observed and three of them were identified as catechol, hydroquinone and benzoquinone. A reaction sequence was therefore proposed for the degradation according to the detected products. Subsequent attack of these intermediates by SO4 − radicals led to the formation of short chain acids such as, acetic, formic and oxalic acid which were identified by ion-exclusion chromatography.

Degradation and mineralization of phenol in aqueous medium by heterogeneous monopersulfate activation on nanostructured cobalt based-perovskite catalysts ACoO(3) (A = La, Ba, Sr and Ce): Characterization, kinetics and mechanism study

Ca 2+ and/or Mg 2+ modified LaCoO 3 perovskites were synthesized via a continuous supercritical water (sc-H 2 O) route, followed by a suite of heat-treatment processes. Experimental results revealed that the introductions of Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ had profoundly hindered the crystal growths of La(OH) 3 and Co(OH) 2 crystallites in sc-H 2 O environment where the extra Mg(OH) 2 had provided a confined platform for their reaction, effectively facilitating the formation of phase pure LaCoO 3 perovskite. The synergistic effect as induced by dual-site substitution of Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ was proven very beneficial for suprafacial oxidation process, which had reduced the apparent activation energy (Ea) of LaCoO 3 to only 34 kJ/mol in toluene oxidation. This is comparable to some noble metal catalysts. However, the dual-site substitution had somehow deactivated the intrafacial reaction process as the co-substituted Ca 2+ had inhibited the generation of surface lattice oxygen and decreased the reducibility of LaCoO 3 perovskite.

An LaCoO3 thin film was prepared on Si(111) substrate successfully using an amorphous heteronuclear complex, LaCo(DTPA)·6H2O, as a precursor. The surface chemical structures and interface reaction of LaCoO3/Si thin film were studied by XPS and AES techniques. The AES depth profile analysis indicated that the composition of the LaCoO3 thin film was relatively homogeneous with depth. Interface diffusion and chemical reaction took place at the interface between the LaCoO3 layer and the Si substrate during thermal treatment. The linear least-squares fitting of the AES depth profile analysis indicated that the LaCoO3 decomposed into simple a oxide of La and Co at the interface. An SiO2 species also formed at the interface when the sample was treated at relatively high temperature. Interface diffusion and reaction were intensified with increasing calcination temperature and time. When the temperature was <650 °C, the interface species were mainly La2O3 and CoO simple oxides. After the temperature reached 700 °C, the interface species were La2O3, CoO and SiO2. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Chemical structure and interface reaction of LaCoO3/Si thin-film system

Nanosized LaCoO3 cobaltite oxide powder with perovskite structure was successfully synthesized at a relatively low calcination temperature using an amorphous heteronuclear complex, LaCo(DTPA)·6H2O, as a precursor. The precursor decomposed completely into cobaltite oxide above 400 °C according to the DTA and TGA results. XPS revealed that the decomposed species was composed of LaCoO3 cobaltite oxide after the precursor was calcined at 500 °C for 2 hours. XRD demonstrated that nanosized LaCoO3 crystalline powder with perovskite structure was formed after the calcination temperature increased to 600 °C. The grain size and the crystal size of LaCoO3 increased with the calcination temperature from 500 °C to 800 °C, and the heat-treatment time has a less obvious effect on the grain size and the crystal size. It is a useful way to synthesize nanosized perovskite oxides using an amorphous complex as a precursor. This method can be easily quantitatively controlled.
