Conjugated microporous poly(aniline)s (CMPAs) are an intriguing material platform for the selective capture of toxic heavy metal ions from water. However, the hydrophobic, monotonous N heteroatom and microporous properties limit their application scopes, particularly for the in-depth treatment requiring to a parts per billion (ppb) level. Herein, we report a novel chitosan-anchored CMPA (CMPA-CS), as designed through delicately exploiting the chitosan as either adsorption sites or pore templates for CMPA to acquire highly functionalized mesopores that could considerably facilitate Hg(II) adsorption. The CMPA-CS thus displayed excellently wide pH suitability (1.0–13.0), large capacity (862.1 mg g−1), ultrafast removal rate (k2 = 0.163 mg g−1 min−1), high affinity (Kd = 7.1 × 106), and strong anti-interference performance (selectivity of minimum 94.5% under the extreme influence of 100-fold-concentration cations). Besides, the Hg(II) concentration could be decreased from 0.578 ppm to less than 1.106 ppb in Minjiang river water substrates, below the EPR drinking water standards of 2 ppb. Comprehensive characterization revealed that the removal mechanism of Hg (II) was primarily a synergetic chelation reaction from the unique nitrogen ligands and O-containing groups, with the following features intensified: (i) good wettability to increase the interaction between CMPA and Hg(II) as contributed by the plentiful oxygen-containing groups; (ii) hierarchical mesopores that would promote ions transport efficiency as created by the chitosan. The new insight in this work can offer valuable guidelines for the design and structure optimization of CMPAs, facilitating its real-world commercial implementation.

The future of polyoxymetalates for biological and chemical apllications

Environmental pollution has been a threat since the industrial revolution. Environmental pollution has extensively increased in the last few decades because of human activity and the rapid expansion of modern industry and agriculture. Different pollutants like dyes, heavy metals, etc. can not only affect human health, but also that of other living things. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the application of suitable approaches and materials to mitigate toxic pollutants in the environment. Polyoxometalates (POMs), representing a group of metal-oxide clusters with high thermal stability, high negative charges, modification capability, and remarkable redox and ligand capabilities, are examples of materials used in environmental chemistry. They can function as remediation adsorbents and catalysts in pollution monitoring and control. This article gives a state-of-the-art overview of POMs and their synthetic strategies and presents the recent progress of POM-based materials (POMBMs) used in environmental pollution studies. It examines different POM-based composites and their applications in pollutant/contaminant monitoring (in conjunction with various analytical techniques) and abatement. Possible adsorption and catalytic degradation mechanisms are also described. Finally, the current challenges, gaps, future directions and prospects for improving the utility and applicability of POMBMs are presented. It is hoped that the article is timely and provides a comprehensive perspective on designing, constructing and applying POMs and POMBMs as adsorbents and/or catalysts for environmental pollution research. 

Polyoxometalate-based materials against environmental pollutants: A review

Aluminosilicate zeolite nanoparticles were synthesized in a water-in-oil solvent and applied as an adsorbent for tetracycline (TC) removal from aqueous solutions. The large specific surface area at 495.8 m2 g–1 confirms that the zeolite nanoparticles have mesopores. The zeolite nanoparticles show an excellent removal efficiency for TC, achieving over 97% in the pH range of 4.70–7.17. A fast adsorption kinetics was observed, reaching equilibrium in only 20 min following a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption isotherm was found to follow the Langmuir model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of TC of 454.55 mg g–1 at pH 6.7 with no salt added. After 6 cycles of reuse, the removal efficiency of TC remained high at 90.3%. It was understood that the adsorption process is spontaneous and exothermic, with an activation energy of 37.94 kJ mol–1. The high observed adsorption affinity is attributed to hydrogen bonding between TC and the hydroxyl groups on the zeolite nanoparticles and the formation of outer-sphere surface complexes. This study shows a new way to synthesize aluminosilicate zeolite nanoparticles that are an efficient and recyclable adsorbent for effective removal of TC from contaminated water. 

Fast Removal of Tetracycline from Aqueous Solution by Aluminosilicate Zeolite Nanoparticles with High Adsorption Capacity

The use of Fischer-Speier esterification reaction produced biodiesel as a substitute for fossil fuels has potential to alleviate the climate and energy crisis. However, catalysts for the esterification, such as H2SO4, ionic liquids etc., pose environmental concerns due to their difficulty in reuse, complex synthesis process or the requirement of strong acid treatment. Herein, we try to avoid using common acidification treatments and exploit p-phenylenediamine and 1, 3-propanesultone under the intensification of hydrogen bonding donor (HBD) of ethanol to acquire novel chemicals of [N,N-di(propanesulfonic) phenylenediamine][ethanol]2 in one step for the first time. This route triggers hydrogen bond interaction in the produced networks to enable both stable self-solidification and effective esterification catalysis, achieving remarkable 96.3% of esterification conversion that could even suppress homogenous catalysts under very mild conditions, but with easy separation feature. This synthetic method holds great promise for the synthesis of value-added chemicals in a more environmentally friendly manner. 

Hydrogen bond induced acidic solids for effective esterification catalysis

In chemical engineering, the Fischer–Speier esterification shows incredible value for biofuel production. However, the transformation suffers from challenges including necessary catalysts that cause corrosion issues in addition to a complex synthesis. Herein, we report a green acidic liquid, [N,N,N-tris(propanesulfonic)aniline][ethanol]3, which is induced by hydrogen bonding interactions between a hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) of [N,N,N-tris(propanesulfonic)aniline] and three hydrogen bond donators (HBD) of ethanol, through a one-step reaction. This liquid demonstrates strong Bronsted acidity and hydrogen bond networking to mimic ionic liquids (ILs) or deep-eutectic solvents (DESs). Even under mild conditions, biodiesel was produced with 97.65% of esterification conversion. Exploiting distinguished molecular geometry with a singular methodology, made possible by contributions from HBD, allows for a further reaction of 1,3-propanesulfonate with positively charged amines. This discovery is feasible with a wide range of HBDs as a solvent resulting more commercially accessible products owing to a much greener synthesis when compared with ILs and DESs.
