Backup systems and methods are disclosed for a virtual computing environment Certain examples include a system having a backup management server that communicates with a host server having at least one virtual machine The management server coordinates with the host server to perform backup copies of entire virtual machine disks from outside the guest operating system of the virtual machine In certain examples, such backup systems further utilize a volume shadow copy service executing on the host server to quiesce virtual machine applications to put data in a consistent state to be backed up The backup system then utilizes hypervisor snapshot capabilities of the host server to record intended changes to the virtual machine disk files while such files are being copied (eg, backed up) by the host server Such recorded changes can be later committed to the virtual machine disk files once the backup operation has completed

The analysis may include re-playing the suspicious URL in a virtual environment which simulates the intended computing device to receive the electronic message. If the re-played URL is determined to be malicious, the malicious URL is added to a black list which is updated throughout the computer system.

A system and method are disclosed for network-based file analysis for malware detection. Network content is received from a network tap. A binary packet is identified in the network content. A binary file, including the binary packet, is extracted from the network content. It is determined whether the extracted binary file is detected to be malware.

Each virtual environment component is configured to mimic live environment components, for example a browser application component or an operating system component. The suspicious network content is replayed in the virtual environment using one or more of the virtual environment components. The virtual environment component behavior is analyzed in view of an expected behavior to identify malicious network content. The malicious network content is then identified and processed.

Digital devices are quarantined for a predetermined period of time upon connection to the communication network. An exemplary method to contain malware includes detecting a digital device upon connection with a communication network, quarantining network data from the digital device for a predetermined period of time, transmitting a command to the digital device to activate a security program to identify security risks, and analyzing the network data to identify malware within the digital device.

A scan engine is configured to scan data for malicious code and determine a result of the scanning, wherein the result indicates whether malicious code is present in the data. A driver portion is configured for installation in an operating system of a target VM, which is one of the guest VMs. The driver portion intercepts an access request to a file, that originates within the target VM. The driver portion communicates information identifying a location of the data to be scanned by the scan engine without sending a copy of the data to the scan engine. The scan engine executes within the virtualization layer outside a context of the target VM.
