The evolution of photoelectrochemical (PEC) bioanalysis has resulted in substantial progress in its analytical performance and biodetection applications. The aim of this review is to provide a panoramic snapshot of the state of the art in this dynamically developing field, with special emphasis on PEC DNA analysis, immunoassay, enzymatic biosensing and cell-related detection. The future prospects in this area are also evaluated and discussed. This work will serve as a useful source to inform the interested audience of the latest developments and applications in the field of PEC bioanalysis.

Photoelectrochemical DNA biosensors.

Efficient Carbon Nanotube Photodiodes A single photon absorbed in a single-walled carbon nanotube device can generate multiple unbound particles carrying an electric charge. Gabor et al. (p. 1367) report that in such a device at low temperatures, excitation with light of increasing energy leads to well-defined stepwise increases in current. Interestingly, because of the unique band structure of carbon nanotubes, this behavior is analogous to particle-antiparticle creation commonly observed in high-energy particle physics. These observations point to the promise of investigations in other nanoscale carbon systems, such as graphene, and could lead to numerous applications, including highly sensitive photon detection and ultra-efficient photovoltaics. The decay of photoexcited electrons in a carbon nanotube device creates multiple pairs of charge carriers. We observed highly efficient generation of electron-hole pairs due to impact excitation in single-walled carbon nanotube p-n junction photodiodes. Optical excitation into the second electronic subband E22 leads to striking photocurrent steps in the device I-VSD characteristics that occur at voltage intervals of the band-gap energy EGAP/e. Spatially and spectrally resolved photocurrent combined with temperature-dependent studies suggest that these steps result from efficient generation of multiple electron-hole pairs from a single hot E22 carrier. This process is both of fundamental interest and relevant for applications in future ultra-efficient photovoltaic devices.

Supporting Online Material for Extremely Efficient Multiple Electron-Hole Pair Generation in Carbon Nanotube Photodiodes

Functionalized nanocomposites based on various type of graphene nanomaterials including graphene, graphene oxides (GOs), and doped graphene (oxides) are widely used as materials for various sensors that can display high sensitivity, selectivity and stability. This review with 347 references summarizes advances in the preparation and functionalization of graphene nanocomposites for the application of electrochemical sensors and biosensors. Following a general introduction into the field, the article is divided into subsections on (a) the synthesis and functionalization of nanocomposites (made from graphene, various kinds of GOs, heteroatom-doped GOs), (b) on methods for functionalization of composites (with other carbon nanomaterials, metal nanoparticles, metal oxide and metal sulfide nanoparticles), (c) on functionalization with inorganic materials including polyoxometalates, hexacyanoferrates, minerals), (d) on functionalization with organic materials such as amino acids, surfactants, organic dyes, ionic liquids, macrocycles (including cyclodextrins, crown ethers and calixarenes), and (e) on functionalization with organometallics and with various other organic compounds, (f) on functionalizations with polymers such as conventional polymers, polyelectrolytes, conducting polymers, molecularly imprinted polymers, (g) on functionalization with biomolecules including proteins and nucleic acids. Other subsections cover flexible graphene and GO based nanocomposites and 3D composites. Application of graphene and GO nanocomposites are then covered in a in large section that comprises electrochemical sensors and biosensors (based on voltammetry, amperometry, potentiometry, impedimetry, electrochemiluminescence, photoelectrochemistry, field effect transistors, electrochemical immunosensors) with specific subsections on gas sensors, enzymatic biosensors and gene sensors. A concluding section covers current challenges and perspectives of graphene and GO based (bio)sensing.

Nanocomposites of graphene and graphene oxides: Synthesis, molecular functionalization and application in electrochemical sensors and biosensors. A review

The aim of this review is to cover advances in noble metal nanoparticle (MNP)-based biosensors and to outline the principles and main functions of MNPs in different classes of biosensors according to the transduction methods employed. The important biorecognition elements are enzymes, antibodies, aptamers, DNA sequences, and whole cells. The main readouts are electrochemical (amperometric and voltametric), optical (surface plasmon resonance, colorimetric, chemiluminescence, photoelectrochemical, etc.) and piezoelectric. MNPs have received attention for applications in biosensing due to their fascinating properties. These properties include a large surface area that enhances biorecognizers and receptor immobilization, good ability for reaction catalysis and electron transfer, and good biocompatibility. MNPs can be used alone and in combination with other classes of nanostructures. MNP-based sensors can lead to significant signal amplification, higher sensitivity, and great improvements in the detection and quantification of biomolecules and different ions. Some recent examples of biomolecular sensors using MNPs are given, and the effects of structure, shape, and other physical properties of noble MNPs and nanohybrids in biosensor performance are discussed.

In recent decades, much attention has been paid to the preparation of photoelectrochemical biosensors. This paper aims to provide an overview on the development of photosensitizers, including the sensing principle of photoelectrochemical biosensors and a special kind of photoelectrochemical biosensor without external irradiation. The latest developments and applications are also included.

By utilizing the characteristic that grapheme can strengthen the photoinduced electrochemical activity of nano particles, the grapheme is firstly functionlized; an electrified polymer is anchored to the surface of grapheme by virtue of the interaction of aromatic organic small molecules with a large pi conjugated structure and the pi-pi of the grapheme, so that the grapheme is electrified. And the functional grapheme and the nano particle layer with opposite charges are assembled layer by layer, so as to obtain a sensitive photoelectric response interface reserved with active functional groups at the surface. The sensing interface can be used for detecting bioactive substances, and a highly sensitive photoinduced electrochemical sensor is obtained.
